A car set ablaze on a busy Yarm road sparking a callout from fire crews.

Emergency services were called to Green Lane after a car set ablaze, just near the junction for HMP Kirklevington Grange. An image taken from the scene shows the smoking aftermath of the incident, with a fire engine parked on the major Yarm route.

One eyewitness reported on social media that they were travelling towards Conyers School and Sixth Form when they saw a "large plume of smoke and flames about 15ft high" near HMP Kirklevington Grange. Cleveland Fire Brigade confirmed that the vehicle was blocking a carriageway and that one of the roads was closed as a result.

AA Traffic News reported slow-moving traffic in the area at the time. The fire service confirmed it was called to the incident at 1.45pm - but that no one was injured.

A Cleveland Fire Brigade spokesperson said: "We got the call at 1.45pm and sent one appliance from Thornaby Fire Station. They were in attendance at 1.54pm and the stop was received at 2.10pm. They came away at 2.29pm. It was a report of the owner's car, near the prison at Kirklevington Road, and one hose reel jet was used."
