MORE than 300 runners joined the start line at an annual fun run this morning.

The Royal Gwent Hospitals 34th cardiology fun run at Tredegar House raises money for the sites cardiology team.

After a quick warm-up by the participants, councillor David Fouweather, the mayor of Newport, started the race - which included both 5k and 10k routes.

He said: I think this is a particularly special event because it helps so many people who have some life-threatening conditions. The Royal Gwent is a wonderful people that helps people from all across Gwent and this is a fun way to raise funds.

Organiser and cardiology fund chairman Steve Richards added: You just dont know who will turn up. I am delighted with the turnout and we will almost certainly do it next year, even bigger and better.

Over 34 years we have raised over 2 million with this event, and we want to fund more mobile heart monitors so that nearly everybody has he opportunity to have that equipment.

He added that the run is inspired by the cardiology fund's founder Dr John Davies OBE, who died in 2016. He established the fun run which used to start at the car park in the Royal Gwent Hospital and follow a route along open roads to Usk.
