Scottish Independence Yes Campaign Glasgow Launch Dennis Canavan
Dennis Canavan relates his experiences of travelling down to and back from Westminster as a Labour MP and arriving on the early morning sleeper which he found a misnomer because he couldn #39;t sleep on them and would feel the need to go to bed once he got home. But there were often duties to be done in the constituency and outside at that time. He was often invited by the students in Glasgow University Labour Club. At that time in the 70s GU Labour Club felt itself to be a very radical outfit, very anti-establishment. In fact they were so anti-establishment and so radical and so left-wing that they didn #39;t even participate in the debates with other students. It was clearly a reaction to a previous era of Labour politicians who graduated from there in the 50s and 60s including the late John Smith and Donald Dewar and because Smith and Dewar used to get dressed up in a suit and a bow tie and take part in debates but the students of the 60s and 70s reacted against this and said they wanted nothing to do with these establishment debates. The Prime Minister at the time was Harold Wilson who was described by many of them at the time as a class traitor who had sold the working class down the river and the students too because the poor students weren #39;t getting grants that kept up with inflation despite the fact that inflation was running at about 25% and the student grant at that time wasn #39;t much below the average manual worker #39;s wage.
