New DVDs

From Side Effects to The Last Stand, theyre back and available on DVD Tuesday. Star ratings are by Seattle Times movie reviewers, freelancers or wire services. For full reviews, search the movie title at seattletimes.com. Release dates are subject to change.

Side Effects (R): The less you know in advance about Steven Soderberghs slick thriller, the more youll enjoy it, says Seattle Times movie critic Moira Macdonald. Starring Rooney Mara and Channing Tatum as a married couple and Jude Law as a psychiatrist who prescribes a new drug, it surprises from beginning to end.

Parker (R): Jason Statham and Jennifer Lopez team up for director Taylor Hackfords heist thriller, which follows a crook with a rigid moral code who plots payback after being betrayed.

Yossi (not rated; for mature audiences): The sequel to Yossi & Jagger looks at a former Israeli soldier (Ohad Knoller) struggling to move on from the loss of his lover, who died on the front lines. In Hebrew, with English subtitles.

The ABCs of Death (not rated; for mature audiences): This alphabet soup of horror consists of 26 chapters by different directors (A is for Apocalypse, etc.) and involves some form of grisly death.

Beautiful Creatures (PG-13): Adapted and directed by Richard LaGravenese from the popular book by Kami Garcia and Margaret Stohl, the supernatural thriller is a sort of topsy-turvy Twilight the high-school boy (Alden Ehrenreich) is a mortal; the girl (Alice Englert) is a witch, or Caster.

Stand Up Guys (R): Al Pacino, Christopher Walken and Alan Arkin play more-or-less retired gangsters hanging out together for a long day and night while trying to avoid bad guys, the kind who take your kidneys and dont even sell them.

The Last Stand (R): A fugitive drug kingpin (Eduardo Noriega), rushing toward the Mexican border in a souped-up Corvette, hits a big roadblock sheriff Arnold Schwarzenegger and his deputies.
