Today #39;s episode is about adult mesenchymal stem cells and their use in rheumatoid arthritis. So far, I #39;ve discussed the use of stem cells in rebuilding cartilage in patients suffering from osteoarthritis. Interestingly, there has been some recent data regarding the use of adult mesenchymal stem cells in rheumatoid arthritis. Adult mesenchymal stem cells were recently found to suppress effector T cell and inflammatory responses and have emerged as attractive therapeutic candidates for immune disorders. MSCs have profound inhibiting effects on what are called fibroblast-like synoviocytes and T cells from RA patients. They could suppress cell multiplication and thus reduce the invasive behavior and inflammatory responses of multiple villains involved in the immunologic problems that cause rheumatoid arthritis. This could also explain why they have benefits above and beyond cartilage regeneration in osteoarthritis.
