THE public has come forward and generously donated to stroke victim Haramaini Mohd Idris to undergo treatment.
In a little over a month, good Samaritans from all over the country including Kuala Lumpur, Selangor, Kedah, Negeri Sembilan and Penang, has helped raise a total of RM5,060 for the 59-year-old former political writer and campaign coordinator.
However, the amount raised is insufficient.
Haramaini needs another RM7,000 as up front payment of three months rental for a machine to undergo peritoneal dialysis.
Ipoh Barat Barisian Nasional community service bureau chief Dr Cheng Wei Yee said the machine, which costs about RM4,000 to rent per month, would help Haramaini a lot.
He currently relies on manual peritoneal dialysis, which has to be carried out five times a day.
Each session takes about an hour and it is taking a toll on Haramainis poor state of health, Dr Cheng said after visiting Haramaini at his home in Pangsapuri Seri Kepayang in Ipoh.
The frequent dialysis sessions means that Haramaini had no chance to leave home.
His wife Pazian Shaharum, 57, said the manual process was stressful as it required Haramaini to shake his body continuously by moving the legs during each session to help drain toxic fluids from inside his body.
Haramainis plight had come to public attention following a house visit by state MCA secretary Datuk Tan Chin Meng last month.
