Baby steps: Matilda Duncan, six, suffers from cerebral palsy

In her pink tutu and dancing shoes, six-year-old Matilda Duncan cuts an adorable figure as she practises among other young pupils at the English National Ballet School.

But on second glance you might spot the splints supporting her ankles, giving an almost unnoticeable clue as to what makes her story so remarkable.

Because just seven months ago, Matilda could barely walk, her cerebral palsy making even the simplest of movements a huge challenge.

But her indomitable spirit and a crucial six-hour operation paid for by generous Mail readers has allowed the determined youngster to win a coveted place at the acclaimed school.
