PORTSMOUTH Mychal Beebe and Tyler Evans of Arete Chiropractic are a husband and wife team specializing in upper cervical care for head and neck injuries and other trauma.

Their practice includes treatment for chronic headaches, brain injury, whiplash, and neurodegenerative conditions like Parkinsons disease.

When thinking of chiropractic services, most think of manual manipulation, said Beebe. You get adjusted and then leave until the next visit. We do no manual manipulation here. Instead, we use 3-D imaging and a physical exam to diagnose the problem and then our treatment is very gentle. To date, we are the only chiropractors in the state trained and using these techniques.

Arete opened in 2016, in Portsmouth's Orchard Park, but Beebe and Evans have been training and practicing their technique for many years, previously in Seattle.

We have a different approach, said Beebe. We use the Blair Chiropractic Technique (https://blairtechnique.com/) which involves a specific system of analyzing and adjusting the upper cervical vertebrae of the spinal column. These vertebrae can misalign in such a way as to interfere with the brainstem and spinal cord as they exit through the floor of the skull into the neural canal. The most common symptoms of this condition are headaches, neck pain, vestibular problems, blurred vision, loss of balance, pain radiating down an extremity. What's more these patients also suffer from anxiety, brain fog, fatigue, memory loss, depression and sleep problems.

These symptoms are debilitating and make people feel like shadow versions of their prior selves. It clearly affects them, but also their family and their community as they are less functional members of society. Special attention is given to the first two cervical vertebrae, the atlas and axis, as they are the most freely moveable vertebrae in the spinal column and the ones most commonly misaligned, especially after head and neck injury. The realignment is extremely gentle with absolutely no twisting of the neck or popping of the joints. Our patients are amazed at how such minimal input can create such global change.

Beebe said that as a private practice they take pride in helping their clients manage their health care.

In a health care system where patients too often slip through the cracks when they are unable to navigate or advocate for themselves, we strive to be a resource for patients and help them achieve their health goals through co-management, said Beebe. Especially with complex head and neck injuries, it often takes a village to help people get well. We are the experts on the craniocervical junction and cervical spine, and we co-manage visual problems, movement patterns and dietary problems with MDs, NDs, optometrists, PTs, acupuncturists, massage therapists and more.

Patients of Arete say they are very happy and are seeing results.

Gail Bleczinski is 78 years old and has suffered from severe headaches all her life. She said she has found relief through Arete.

In my early 40s, I tried chiropractic and got some minor relief, said Bleczinski. I was going to one here in Portsmouth, a very good man who told me there wasnt much more he could do for me. He recommended cranial chiropractic and thats how I came to Arete. Dr. Beebe is wonderful, and I started to get relief after two treatments. She did 3-D x-rays, showed me where the problem was and said what she could do to help.

Bleczinski said she is not pain-free, and never will be.

I will need to go back at times for a tune-up, she said Then I will be good for another 10,000 miles. My husband Bob tells me I finally have my head on straight. I am really grateful and would highly recommend Arete.

Erin Sullivan started seeing Beebe after she suffered a concussion and whiplash injury this past April.

When I first started seeing Dr. Beebe, I was experiencing headaches, neck pain, dizziness, light sensitivity, exhaustion, and emotional disturbances, to name a few symptoms, said Sullivan. The symptoms of concussion and whiplash can be very difficult to pinpoint and understand. Dr. Beebe helped me understand why I was feeling the way I was and helped heal my body. Her adjustments are gentle yet very effective. Dr. Beebe helped bring me back to a level of health I truly did not think I'd ever be able to attain again. Almost all my symptoms have gone away.

Dan Sullivan had a 30-year history of back problems. He said he was constantly going to physical therapy and finally realized it was not working so he looked for a better way.

Four years ago, I met a new PT person in Portsmouth at CJ Physical Wellness who does things a bit different, said Sullivan Her goal is to teach me to fix myself and not rely on PT all my life. During these 30 years I also tried a few different chiropractors who absolutely did nothing for me. I tried Eastern medicine, which did not help. About the time I started going to CJ, I started having neck issues. CJ got my back in good shape, but suggested I see Dr. Beebe for my neck.

My first meeting with her, I told her that all chiropractors were voodoo medicine people. She asked me to give her a chance. For about six months I saw her every week It took about two months and I noticed the pain was beginning to go away. I then went once a month and the neck was doing great. Now I go about every 4 to 5 months just to be checked to confirm my neck and spine are in alignment.

Sullivan said that at 62, his back and neck have not felt this good in a long time.

Our mission is to support the well-being of our Portsmouth, New Hampshire community by helping those with headaches, neck pain, and head and neck trauma to live vibrant lives, said Beebe. We believe in the ripple effect of our care as we can help make our patients bodies a better place to live.
