TEMPE, Ariz. Arte Moreno is aware of the ire that has been directed his way over the past week.

Moreno has owned the Angels since 2003, and the red Angels coat he wears for his annual spring media availability is still inscribed to honor his first spring with the club in 2004. At times, he has spent brilliantly to land or retain future MVPs in Vladimir Guerrero and Mike Trout. He also has spent poorly (Matt Harvey and Trevor Cahill) and disastrously (Josh Hamilton and Zack Cozart). But at least when it comes to the major-league roster the 73-year-old Moreno has shown a willingness to put his money where his mouth is.

This winter, Moreno did exactly that, as the Angels signed the top free-agent position player on the market, third baseman Anthony Rendon, to a seven-year, $245 million deal. The clubs 26-man payroll, according to Cots Contracts, sits at around $175 million, up from $159 million on Opening Day last spring. Morenos own private family...
