Kohl Battleson made his only basket of the game as time expired in the Wyoming 3A boys state championship game against Powell, giving Star Valley a 41-39 victory and the schools first state championship since defeating Mountain View in 2007.

As the lane opened up as he drove to the rim and kissed it off the glass with under a second remaining.

When asked if he had ever seen such an ending in his 33-year coaching career, head coach Tony Saras said: Never. Ive had a few like that in a regular game, but never in a state championship game. I mean, championship games rarely finish on a last-second shot, so we couldnt have scripted this any better. Kohl has come up big for us all year.

Battleson had been forced to settle for state runner-up last year at the state championship against Torrington, and then to the Panthers during the football season. The 5 7 senior, the smallest player on the court, ended up making the biggest shot.

The Braves had built a nine-point lead in the second half but the Panthers came storming back with a trio of three-point baskets from Kalai Smith who finished with the game-high of 17 points. After finishing a very close second in heart-wrenching fashion to finish both the football and wrestling seasons to the Panthers, Powell seemingly had pulled out their Star Valley voodoo doll once again as Hayden Cragoe finished a tough lay in while drawing the fifth personal foul on the Braves leading scorer, Wyatt Shinaver. The 6 2 senior finished with 12 points but had to watch from the bench for the final two and a half minutes as his team mates made a little history.

Thats happened several times this year, Saras said. Our guys knew that we were going to have a chance to win the game in situations where we have a guy go out. They didnt panic, theyre a great group of guys and they kept their composure.

Marshall McArthur and Smith carried the team on their backs, finishing with 14 and 17 points respectively. McArthur had nine rebounds and Smith played much of the games final quarter with four fouls but never committed his fifth. Dalton Passey was huge as he led the team with 15 points, including Star Valleys only three-point basket. Trace Haderlie had another terrific day rebounding the ball and finished with eight.

Saras and the coaching staff made several key decisions that paid off, including inserting Paxton Hokanson who scored four key points in the second half and putting D.J. Sims into the low block where he had eight points and four rebounds.
