Newman Regional Health has welcomed a new cardiology team, which began work at the hospital on Monday. Dr. Pat Crawley and Dr. Mike Lloydm along with their practitioners Krista Ohmie, Physician Assistant, and Mary Warden, Nurse Practitioner, are already seeing patients at the hospital and clinic. The quartet may be new to Newman Regional Health, but it is quite accustomed to working as a team. All four were previously employed at Cardiovascular Consultants of Kansas and have worked together for years. They made me an offer and I said, my mid-level (Warden) comes with me, Crawley said. We all work well together. The four of us all work really well together, Ohmie said. We help each other out, work hard and have fun at the same time. All four providers believe strongly in patient-focused care and providing time for their patients. In addition to their extensive medical training and award-winning cardiological care, all four also possess impressive bedside manner with a focus on humor. They are going to get more dedicated time, Crawley said. We are very down to earth and we dont doctor speak. We give them as much time as they need. I think we will bring a … Continue reading

South African research team make a breakthrough in cardiology – Brand South Africa (press release) (registration) (blog)

Posted: Published on April 8th, 2017

A mutation in a gene has been identified by South African researchers as the cause of heart disease and cardiac arrest. It affects the young who are sporty and athletic. Brand South Africa reporter An all-female team of researchers from the University of Cape Town (UCT) have identified a gene that increases the risk of heart disease and cardiac arrest. Maryam Fish Gasnat Shaboodien and Sarah Kraus discovered the CDH2 gene. It is found in everyone but if it mutates, it causes a genetic disorder known as arrhythmogenic right ventricle cardiomyopathy (ARVC ) which increases the risk of heart disease and cardiac arrest, said the university. The young and the sporty and active are more at risk. The result is sudden death. This study, an international collaboration, began 20 years ago. It was led by a South African team headed by Professor Bongani Mayosi, dean of UCTs Faculty of Health Sciences, along with researchers from the Italian Auxologico Institute in Milan and the University of Pavia. This is probably the biggest breakthrough in South African cardiology since Dr Chris Barnards first heart transplant, said Prof Mayosi. This discovery is a first in the world on our soil and will permit … Continue reading

Stanford launches virtual reality cardiology apps to help kids understand conditions, procedures – iMedicalApps

Posted: Published on April 3rd, 2017

Cardiologists with Childrens Heart Center at Stanford are developing more uses of virtual reality (VR) technology in healthcare. With a goal of developing a comprehensive VR program for use in pediatric care, the hospital has partnered with both clinicians and VR designers (Lighthaus Inc) on three new projects: With an Oculus Rift headset and Touch VR controllers, the Stanford Virtual Heart allows users to view a detailed, 3D heart model. It can be manipulated by viewers, letting them see not just the outside, but also inside of the heart, complete with blood flow. Target audience is students (used by the Stanford University School of Medicine) and patients. Specifically, the Virtual Heart allows users to view congenital heart defects, and learn how such defects may impair heart function. Given the tricky anatomy of this very 3D organ, having it viewable in VR allows physicians to demonstrate the impact of congenital defects to patients and their families in a much more detailed fashion. Imagine the fear and anxiety that undergoing a cardiac catheterization may provoke. Much of this may be due to the unfamiliarity with the procedure. Project Brave Heart hopes to fix this through sending patients an education VR tour of … Continue reading

KP reluctant to provide funds for Peshawar Institute of Cardiology – The News International

Posted: Published on April 2nd, 2017

PESHAWAR: The future of Peshawar Institute of Cardiology (PIC) seems to be in the doldrums as the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa government has showed its reluctance to provide funds for this much-delayed project, well-placed sources told The News. However, the Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf (PTI)-led Khyber Pakhtunkhwa government has given go-ahead to the proposed Peshawar Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) project at a staggering cost of Rs57 billion. But there are no funds with the government for the PIC. Unfortunately, this is true and the government has informed us about the lack of funds for PIC. We have been asked to wait till July 2017, a senior official pleading anonymity and associated with project told The News. The PIC is a desperately needed project for Peshawar and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa as there are no proper cardiac care facilities for a population exceeding 30 million. The project has remained incomplete for the last 12 years. It started in 2004 and has since been a story of neglect, personal greed and wrong priorities. Successive governments of different political parties have failed to complete it. The PTI chief Imran Khan has on innumerable occasions talked about the importance of investing in human capital and provision of healthcare should have … Continue reading

Easing the Burden: The Need for More Palliative Care in Cardiology – Cardiovascular Business

Posted: Published on April 1st, 2017

The American Heart Association and American Stroke Association say that palliative care should be integrated into the care of all patients with advanced cardiovascular disease and stroke as a means to relieve symptoms, improve patients satisfaction with their care, reduce costs and extend survival (Circulation 2016;134[11]: e198-225). Yet, according to 2015 data from the National Palliative Care Registry, only 13 percent of palliative care patients had a cardiac diagnosis. This finding signals the need for both increased referrals to palliative care and more training for cardiovascular specialists in core palliative care skills. Early palliative care is best Palliative care consultation should be considered for patients with cardiovascular disease or stroke whenever a clinician sees either the warning signs of suffering or unmet needs suggested by frequent visits to the emergency department, high symptom burden or caregiver stress, according to an analysis published by the American College of Cardiology (online February 16, 2016). Early palliative care is best and is appropriate at any age and stage of illness. Advanced cardiovascular disease and stroke frequently impose long-term challenges on patients and their families. These conditions often are characterized by unpredictable decompensations and improvements, with subtle decline over time that result in many … Continue reading
