Posted: Published on March 26th, 2017

March 22, 2017 at 8:53 am | The Associated Press Print Article Fateful days changed the destiny of cardiology doctor By AMERICAN HEART ASSOCIATION NEWS Two life-changing events helped mold Dr. Arie Szatkowski, an ebullient, shaggy-haired New Yorker, into a cardiac crusader of the Mid-South. When he was 23, his father, who was a doctor, died suddenly of a heart attack far too young. He was my role model, and I was already applying to medical school, Szatkowski said. After he died, I knew I was going to go into cardiology. A few years later, in the first week of a fellowship at Columbia, it was time for the young doctors to practice administering echocardiograms, an ultrasound test that maps the hearts structure and function. He volunteered to be the subject. I get on the gurney and the professor starts looking and looking more carefully, he said. And he says, Do you know you have atrial septal defect? He didnt. The doctor was referring to a hole in the wall between the hearts two upper chambers, a congenital condition often not discovered until it causes serious problems. It was a stroke of luck I went into the right field, he … Continue reading

Hardwiring Your Schedule for Growth: New Patients, Urgent Care Should Be the ‘Lifeblood’ of a Cardiology Practice – Cardiovascular Business

Posted: Published on March 24th, 2017

Dont underestimate the importance of scheduling in running a successful cardiovascular practice. Hold slots for new patients C. Michael Valentine, MD, an interventional cardiologist at Centra Health in Lynchburg, Va., and 2016-17 vice president of the American College of Cardiology (ACC), is a fan of hardwiring. During a session about Medicares Merit-based Incentive Payment System (MIPS) at the ACCs Cardiovascular Summit, he urged attendees to work with vendors to automate quality-metrics documentation into their EHR systems. Hardwire your EHR where possible, and you will save yourself clicks while optimizing MIPS documentation, he advises. Attendees who crowded into Valentines session on improving patient access also heard about the value of hardwiringin the context of appointment scheduling. Every week, 25 percent of patient appointments should be filled with new patients, he says, and the way to ensure you achieve, or surpass, that goal is using programmed scheduling templates. In other words, every physicians schedule will include slots reserved for new patients, and no one is permitted to tinker with them. New patients are the financial lifeblood of a practice, says Denise Brown, vice president of Business Intelligence Solutions at MedAxiom Consulting and Valentines co-presenter at the ACC session. Past colleagues, Brown and … Continue reading

A simple fix to avoid unnecessary coronary stents is overlooked by … – Science Daily

Posted: Published on March 20th, 2017

Physician researchers at Thomas Jefferson University suspect that some cases of coronary artery spasm go unrecognized and are incorrectly treated with stents. The good news -- there could be a simple fix to eliminate these unnecessary stenting procedures. The team published a case series in Catheterization and Cardiovascular Interventions describing six patients who were scheduled for angioplasty and stenting for the diagnosis of coronary artery disease (five of whom had a cardiac catheterization days prior). However, when the cardiologists gave nitroglycerin prior to placing the stent, the blockages resolved, indicating the true diagnosis of coronary artery spasm. Angioplasty was deferred and all patients were successfully treated with medication. "Our suspicion is that some patients receive stents unnecessarily since they are misdiagnosed as having fixed atherosclerotic blockage while the true culprit, coronary spasm, goes unrecognized," said senior author Michael Savage, M.D., Director of the Jefferson Angioplasty Center and the Ralph J. Roberts Professor of Cardiology in the Sidney Kimmel Medical College at Thomas Jefferson University. "Cardiologists need to know that they could be overlooking coronary spasm and thus, over treating their patients with stents." Cardiovascular guidelines on cardiac catheterization and coronary intervention with stents go to great lengths emphasizing the importance … Continue reading
