New sensor could cut hospital trips for heart failure

Posted: Published on March 2nd, 2015

Estela Villanueva-Whitman, Special to the Register 11:04 p.m. CST March 1, 2015 This illustration shows the CardioMEMS HF sensor system implanted in the pulmonary artery.(Photo: Special to the Register) Complications from congestive heart failure landed Everett Fensterman in the hospital a few times over the past year. In February, he was one of the first patients at UnityPoint Clinic Cardiology to receive a new wireless sensor aimed to better manage heart failure and possibly prevent future hospitalizations. Fensterman, who already had an implantable cardioverter defibrillator to increase the pumping mechanism of the heart, said his heart was only pumping at 15 percent at one point. His new monitoring system allows him to send medical information from home. I just lie on a pillow for 20 seconds and it sends it to the office. I do it once a day, he said. Cardiologist Dr. Prasad Palakurthy implanted the CardioMEMS HF system into Fenstermans pulmonary artery to directly measure and record pressure there. Increased pulmonary artery pressure appears before weight and blood pressure changes, which may signal worsening heart failure. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration approved the device in May 2014. UnityPoint Clinic Cardiology is piloting the program with three patients. … Continue reading

Cardiologists urge caution with daily aspirin for non-heart attack patients

Posted: Published on February 27th, 2015

At Martin ORiordans cardiology practice in the Philadelphia area, it happens weekly. A 45- or 50-year-old patient mentions that her father had a heart attack at the same age. Worried that the same fate will befall her despite being in good health, she takes baby aspirin every day. ORiordans typical response: Please stop. Physicians have known for decades that daily, low-dose aspirin makes sense for patients who have had a heart attack or stroke, as it sharply reduces the chance of having a second one. But for people who have never had one of these cardiovascular events, the thinking on aspirin is less clear, despite two recent large-scale studies. The reason for caution is the very reason that aspirin wards off heart attacks and strokes: It interferes with blood clotting, putting the patient at higher risk of serious gastrointestinal bleeding. Bottom line: Aspirin is more potent than many people realize, said ORiordan, of Mercy Cardiology. People have kind of looked at it as, Aspirin, an apple, a glass of milk, its all good for you, said ORiordan, who is on staff at Lankenau Medical Center. Aspirin is a medication. It is a medication drawing renewed scrutiny, 30 years after the … Continue reading

AMSSM and FIFA hold second summit on ECG interpretation in athletes

Posted: Published on February 26th, 2015

Getty Images In a continued effort to help physicians more accurately interpret ECG results to improve cardiac safety in athletes and impact sudden cardiac death, the American Medical Society for Sports Medicine and the FIFA Medical Assessment and Research Center (FMARC) are bringing together top sports cardiology and sport medicine physicians from around the world for a second summit on ECG interpretation in athletes in Seattle on 26-27 February. The Summit will focus on reaching agreement upon scientifically driven ECG interpretation standards, defining clear steps in the evaluation of ECG abnormalities and making updates to free online ECG learning modules that were designed as a result of the first ECG Summit. The 2012 Summit yielded four consensus papers and the launch of the educational modules available on the AMSSM and British Medical Journal learning site. To date, more than 13,000 modules have been completed by physicians from over 117 countries. "The Seattle summit offers an educational package for all sports physicians looking after the health of athletes for free, said FIFAs Chief Medical Officer Professor Jiri Dvorak. FIFA is fully committed to take all measures necessary to reduce the risks of sudden cardiac death among footballers and athletes in general. … Continue reading

Study Ties Saunas to Lower Risk of Death From Heart Disease

Posted: Published on February 25th, 2015

By Dennis Thompson HealthDay Reporter MONDAY, Feb. 23, 2015 (HealthDay News) -- Sweating it out in a hot sauna may be relaxing, and new research suggests it may also be good for your heart health. A study from Finland found that men who use saunas frequently are less likely to die from heart disease. Men's risk was even lower when they visited saunas more often in a week, and when they spent longer periods of time in a sauna each session, the researchers reported. The findings could cause cardiologists to reconsider commonly held concerns about exposing heart patients to the heat present in a sauna, said Dr. Paul Thompson, medical director of cardiology at Hartford Hospital in Hartford, Conn., and a member of the American College of Cardiology Sports and Exercise Cardiology Council. "As a cardiologist, I have discouraged patients from using a sauna, from concerns over heat putting demands on a person's cardiovascular system," Thompson said. "Maybe we shouldn't be so restrictive with our patients." While the study found an association between sauna use and improved heart health, it couldn't show a cause-and-effect relationship between these factors. Dr. Elliott Antman, a spokesman for the American Heart Association, explained, "We … Continue reading

The broad depth of knowledge and skills represented on the new Cardiology Board will help as we work to evolve our Certification and Maintenance of Certification (MOC) programs to increase their relevancy for all of the specialties in cardiology, said Richard J. Baron, MD, president and CEO of ABIM. I am confident that the board will effectively drive innovation in the options we offer cardiologists to meet MOC requirements. I feel quite honored to be on this board, said Dr. Bosner. A major aspect of the position is related to how we will work with physicians nationwide to determine the most effective ways for them to keep up with a rapidly changing world of medical knowledge. During the initial ABIM interview, Dr. Bosner had the opportunity to discuss specifics of how cardiology is practiced in rural communities. They were quite pleased with the results and the close relationships that the hospital has developed with nearby medical centers, … Continue reading
