Apart from studying Ampyra for additional indications like cerebral palsy and post-stroke deficits (phase IIb/III study to commence in the second quarter of 2014), Acorda is evaluating other candidates like GGF2 (treatment of heart failure - proof-of-concept study to be initiated by year end) and rHIgM22 (multiple sclerosis - phase I ongoing). The company has also started enrolling patients in a phase II study being conducted with AC105. The double-blind, randomized, placebo controlled study is being conducted in patients with traumatic spinal cord injury (SCI). AC105's safety and efficacy will be evaluated in this study which will have many exploratory efficacy measures. Patients will receive six intravenous doses of AC105 or placebo over 30 hours with the first dose being administered within 12 hours of the injury. We note that AC105 has fast track status in the U.S. Meanwhile, the U.S. Army Medical Research and Material Command has awarded a $2.67 million research contract to Acorda for the phase II study. Medicaid IG wants Ulster's CP agency to return $2.27M

Posted: Published on September 27th, 2013

Published: 2:00 AM - 09/27/13 KINGSTON United Cerebral Palsy of Ulster County Inc. should pay the state $2.27 million for overbilling the state Medicaid program, according to the Office of Medicaid Inspector General. The inspector general's office issued a news release Wednesday detailing its findings. They are based on the agency's audits of the UCP program's bills submitted for 2005 through 2008 and Jan. 1, 2009 through March 31, 2010. Auditors pulled a sample of the billing and examined them in detail. They found "excessive levels of missing documentation," the news release said. The most common error was treatment plans that lacked the signature of a physician. Medicaid Inspector General James C. Cox said: "Without proof that a doctor has ordered a service, no one can verify that a service should have or was provided." No money was reported stolen, a representative for the inspector general said later. The auditors used their sample to project mistakes and deficiencies for the rest of the bills from UCP. That projection tagged the overpayments at nearly $1 million in one audit and $1.27 million in the other. Linda Clark, a lawyer for UCP of Ulster County, said her client is appealing the audit … Continue reading

Bolton, UK (PRWEB UK) 25 September 2013 Approved by the Leeds District Registry, Ruby Curtis received the substantial payment for cerebral palsy compensation to help support her moving forward with the neurological condition, as reported by The Yorkshire Post (1). After being admitted to St James hospital in Leeds 2005, doctors failed to recognise that Lisa Curtis had suffered a ruptured uterus. This serious complication meant that Ruby was starved of oxygen during her birth, which lead to her developing the brain injury (1). Speaking on the condition, Suzanne Yates from Cerebral Palsy Solicitors, Asons, said: Having seen many cerebral palsy claims come through to Asons, we fully understand how serious the repercussions can be for failing to spot a ruptured uterus. Not only does it put the mother at harm, but as you can see in this case, it has forever affected the quality of life that Ruby will now experience. Ruby will now need assistance to help her with everyday living, and unfortunately this will come at a substantial cost. Filing for cerebral palsy compensation will be highly beneficial and rewarding to the quality of life that Ruby will now experience as she will be able to continue … Continue reading

Mum seeks fundraising help to give son a chance to walk

Mum seeks fundraising help to give son a chance to walk 6:00pm Tuesday 17th September 2013 in News A MOTHER is trying to raise 15,000 to send her disabled son to receive treatment that could enable him to walk. Camren Haines, three, has a form of cerebral palsy that means he cannot stand and can move only by pulling himself along by his arms. Mum Sophie Haines, 27, of Kidlington, hopes to send him to The Footsteps Centre in Dorchester-on-Thames. The centre offers specialist rehabilitation that will help strengthen Camrens muscles and could help him to crawl or walk in the future. Mrs Haines said: I cannot put into words how happy it would make me feel to see him stand up and walk for himself. Just to see him do something for himself, something most children do without a second thought, would make the last three years a little bit less painful. Camren was born prematurely at 27 weeks and was rushed to the Special Care Baby Unit (SCBU) at the John Radcliffe Hospital in Oxford. When he was discharged 111 days later, said Mrs Haines, she was told he was fine, but she found he could not extend … Continue reading

(Photo: Facebook/AndrewsAngels123) Andrew Burkhart,6, suffers from cerebral palsy and is currently receiving "non-western" medical treatment for his condition. September 16, 2013|5:51 pm A couple from Phoenix whose son suffers from cerebral palsy and needed out-of-state medical treatment last summer, received help from a church in Mission Viejo, Calif., after its members learned that the family was feeling helpless and in need of financial assistance. "In an act of desperation really, after reaching out to folks through social media with no solution, I sent an e-mail to 20 churches in the area of Mission Viejo, Calif., where the clinic is and I asked if they knew of any affordable private living situation that would meet our needs," Kellie Burkhart said, the mother of the boy. The Burkhart's 6-year-old son, Andrew, was diagnosed with cerebral palsy two years ago and after countless treatments with top notch doctors in the Phoenix area, and realizing their son's health was deteriorating, they decided to take on homeopathic treatments instead. Stem cell and hyperbaric oxygen treatments were part of the medical attention he needed which called for isolation from public contact leaving the Burkhart's with no choice but expensive private lodging as their only option. "Of … Continue reading

Cerebral Palsy and Medical Malpractice Lawsuit Help: Resource4thePeople Reports New Study Narrows Risk Factors

Posted: Published on September 16th, 2013

San Diego, CA (PRWEB) September 16, 2013 http://www.resource4thepeople.com/medicalmalpractice/cerebralpalsy-lawsuit.html Resource4thePeople announced today that the findings of a new international study on cerebral palsy and infant death have researchers encouraged that they may be closing in on risk factors for the two conditions. While the researchers note that medical mistakes during pregnancy, birth and after delivery have been cited in many such cases and have been the subject of many lawsuits the researchers say that other factors may be even more important. "This is an important study in an area that tragically affects many families around the world and the scientists are calling for more research into these conditions," said Resource4thePeople. "We fully support any additional research that can help reduce the number of these cases and also will continue to offer complimentary legal consultations to families who may have been the victims of medical malpractice." The study acknowledges asphyxial birth events -- "incidents during labor and delivery that had the potential to interfere with oxygen getting to the newborn's brain" -- that have been attributed to medical malpractice has long been considered a major factor. However, the scientists concluded that birth defects and poor fetal growth were the most common risk … Continue reading

One-of-a-kind walk for this grad

Posted: Published on September 15th, 2013

Jesse Martinez Jr. got the rock star treatment Saturday as he took the commencement stage at Freeman Coliseum. Martinez, 19, received a standing ovation for something most take for granted: He walked. A milestone for each of the 400 South San Antonio High School graduates, Martinez's walk to accept his diploma was a lifelong dream achieved with grit, sacrifice and determination. He was born with cerebral palsy and lost both legs at an early age. Saturday was the first time he walked with his prosthetics in public. With help from his teachers and senior class advisor, Martinez stood in his blue cap and gown, flashed a smile for the cameras and walked. I believe that because something isn't probable does not mean it's impossible, he said. Anything can be done with the right state of mind. Never one for special treatment, his teachers said, Martinez completed the work he missed during absences for surgery or rehabilitation. He stayed involved in activities such as fundraisers for school dances, and he was determined to walk the stage for graduation. This is pretty much an event that I've long waited for, and I'm glad to get it done. It's overwhelming, Martinez said. It's … Continue reading
