Morris dancing, face painting, a raffle, hoopla, splat the rat, cakes, vintage car and Porsche rides were among the activities arranged by four-year-old Harrison Dillings Great Auntie Hil and Great Uncle Mike for the Quintessentially English Garden Party fundraiser. Harrison, who lives with mum Joanne, dad Jon and big brother Reece in Glenmoor Road, Ferndown, is quadriplegic and severely physically disabled, constantly needing treatment and expensive equipment to help him become more independent. His parents set up Harrisons Trust Fund after being overwhelmed with kind donations from family and friends. Jon, who works in recruitment, said: To say that the event was a success is a huge understatement. A walk to remember

Posted: Published on September 13th, 2013

Jesse Martinez Jr. got the rock star treatment Saturday as he took the commencement stage at Freeman Coliseum. Martinez, 19, received a standing ovation for something most take for granted: He walked. A milestone for each of the 400 South San Antonio High School graduates, Martinez's walk to accept his diploma was a lifelong dream achieved with grit, sacrifice and determination. He was born with cerebral palsy and lost both legs at an early age. Saturday was the first time he walked with his prosthetics in public. With help from his teachers and senior class advisor, Martinez stood in his blue cap and gown, flashed a smile for the cameras and walked. I believe that because something isn't probable does not mean it's impossible, he said. Anything can be done with the right state of mind. Never one for special treatment, his teachers said, Martinez completed the work he missed during absences for surgery or rehabilitation. He stayed involved in activities such as fundraisers for school dances, and he was determined to walk the stage for graduation. This is pretty much an event that I've long waited for, and I'm glad to get it done. It's overwhelming, Martinez said. It's … Continue reading

It would be a fitting profession for a boy with such a remarkable story. The inspirational 11-year-old, of Karrinyup, has had nine operations for cerebral palsy. Jack, who today will be announced as this year's metropolitan Telethon child, said if there was one thing he'd learnt from his experiences it was never to give up. "You get mad sometimes," he said. "You stumble and cry, but that's life. If you mope and go, 'Poor me, I have a disability', then after a while people aren't going to feel sorry for you and your life will just go downhill. "But, if you just take it as, 'I'm no different from everyone, everyone's different from me. What's wrong with them', You will just skyrocket." Jack was diagnosed with spastic diplegia, a form of cerebral palsy that causes constant muscle stiffness in his legs and left arm, and needs constant treatment. His mother, Cora, said Jack's life has been a struggle. His first four weeks were spent in 24-hour care at … Continue reading

Mattie, named after former New York Yankee star and current Los Angeles Dodgers manager Don Mattingly, has had a rough run of it in her short two years. She was born nine weeks early with a brain injury. She had a 12 percent chance of survival. Matties parents, James and Jessica, did a lot of praying. They knew in advance that their child was a high-risk baby and were given options that are not easy to discuss. They decided they were going to have their child and give her a happy life, no matter what the result might be. When Mattie was born, it was obvious that something wasnt right. Treatment of children with cerebral palsy could be boosted

Posted: Published on September 5th, 2013

Sep. 4, 2013 Children with cerebral palsy could be helped to speak more clearly following research by a University of Strathclyde academic. Dr Anja Kuschmann will analyse the speech patterns of young people affected by the condition, in an effort to understand more about why they can have difficulties talking. Cerebral palsy (CP) is usually caused by an injury to the brain before, during or after birth. Children with CP have difficulties in controlling muscles and movements as they grow and develop. Discovering more about how the speech of children with CP is affected by muscular problems and brain damage could, Dr Kuschmann believes, lead to improvements in diagnosis and therapy. She said: "Many children with CP have difficulties with speech melody, rhythm and stress. These difficulties, generally referred to as prosodic difficulties, can affect the intelligibility of a child's speech, and are therefore of great clinical importance. "However, the development of prosody in children with CP is currently not well understood. As a result, it is not certain whether prosodic difficulties in CP are due to muscular problems during speaking or the inability to build and store the correct prosodic information in the brain. "This research will investigate the … Continue reading
