Va research institute to study cerebral palsy

Posted: Published on August 18th, 2013

ROANOKE, Va. The Virginia Tech Carilion Research Institute is creating a research clinic to study new ways to treat cerebral palsy. Organizers say that children from around the world who suffer from the disorder will be treated at the Roanoke-based institute's Neuromotor Research Clinic. Cerebral palsy involves the loss or impairment of motor function or posture. It is caused by injury or abnormal development in the brain that happens before, during or immediately after birth. The Roanoke Times reports that the program is being funded by a $4.2 million grant from the National Institutes of Health. Additional financial support is coming from Virginia Tech, Carilion Clinic and private donors. The program will follow the progress of 135 children between the ages of 2 and 8 and incorporate science developed at the center with therapy that will be delivered in the child's home. It will include study sites at the University of Virginia and Ohio State University. Researchers at the institute have developed a form of high-intensity therapy to help affected children use their impaired arms and legs. "We do not accept the notion that damage to the brain is irreversible, or that treatment should only be for a select few," … Continue reading

Posted: Published on August 17th, 2013

THE final push to raise 50,000 to send a Glasgow schoolboy to America for life-changing surgery is under way. More than 28,000 has already been raised for Joshua Granger's treatment, but now that surgery has been set for November the big push is on. The nine-year-old has cerebral palsy and has to wear splints to help him walk. He also gets painful injections in his legs every three months. But he could be given a new lease of life through a surgical procedure carried out at a hospital in Missouri. As previously reported in the Evening Times, the Pollok youngster's family has embarked on a campaign to raise 50,000. Since we highlighted his plight Joshua's mum, Ashley, has been overwhelmed by offers from people asking what they can do to help the St Marnock's Primary pupil. The date of the operation has been forward by four months - but it will only go ahead if Joshua's family can raise a further 22,000. Ashley, 26, a pupil support assistant, said: "It is nerve -wracking now that we are awaiting our appointment date. "Joshua is excited he will have a new start for Christmas, and he is looking forward to visiting America. … Continue reading

Charlotte therapists reach out to help a Kenyan boy with cerebral palsy gain strength

Posted: Published on August 17th, 2013

A rain storm in Kenya last year brought Mayian Musembi to Charlotte this summer. Charlotte pediatric physical therapist Amy Sturkey was on vacation in the summer of 2012, photographing the great animal migration in Kenya. Rain forced her group into a lodge in the middle of nowhere, where she met 11-year-old Mayian and his family. The Musembis brought Mayian, now 12, who has quadriplegic cerebral palsy, across two rivers in a wheelchair to watch the migration. I was so impressed with this familys will and determination to get this child out on safari that I went over to introduce myself, Sturkey said. Sturkey and the Musembis hit it off. Mayians mother, Catherine Simaton, was pleasantly surprised by Sturkeys demeanor. Most of the time, Simaton said, people only see the wheelchair and not Mayian. She said, Come to Charlotte, we can help him. Thats why Simaton, Mayian and physical therapist Grace Wanja spent the last six weeks in Charlotte, working on therapies to build his strength and independence. They are heading home to Nairobi, Kenya, on Tuesday, and will leave with a stronger child and strategies and equipment to help others. During one of their sessions in Charlotte, Sturkey told Mayian … Continue reading

Like many 5-year-olds, he enjoys sports and playing with his little brother - but unlike many children his age, he needs help to do even the simplest of tasks. Daniel was born with spastic cerebral palsy, a condition that makes his muscles very tight, prohibiting him from standing or walking unaided. In the UK, a surgical procedure known as selective dorsal rhizotomy, or SDR, is relatively new with poor availability, which is why Daniel and his family have sought help from Dr. T.S. Park, a neurosurgeon at the St. Louis Children's Hospital in Missouri. The potentially life-changing surgery comes at some cost, however - $83,000 to be precise. Tree of Hope - a UK-based children's charity with close links to MNT - is helping Daniel's family with funding, in addition to a 5,000 ($7,600) donation from us toward Daniel's cause. The Tree of Hope is Medical News Today's charity of the year. Go to Daniel's … Continue reading

Family has raised enough to fund operation

Posted: Published on August 5th, 2013

5 Aug 2013 07:00 Little Jack Ostler will travel to America this month to undergo an operation to help him walk "I want to walk, mummy" are the words of a determined four-year-old Woking boy with cerebral palsy. Jack Ostlers dream could become a reality because his family and friends have raised about 37,000 to fund an operation in America. The youngster was born eight weeks early at St Peters Hospital in Chertsey, which caused him to suffer oxygen starvation and as a result he has cerebral palsy. He has difficulty using his arms, hands and legs and his condition means he finds talking a challenge and he will not be able to walk, use his hands normally or sit up without help. When the Woking Advertiser last spoke to his parents Sarah and Simon Ostler at the end of April, more than 10,000 had been raised but their target was 50,000. This month the family will jet off to America after 37,000 was raised through donations and fundraising events. Mrs Ostler said: Everyone has been amazing. I cant explain, its just been phenomenal. We cant thank them enough, they are the reason we can actually get to America. Read … Continue reading

Dodgy chiropractor struck off

Posted: Published on August 3rd, 2013

Dr Malcolm Hooper has been found guilty of misconduct and struck off the register for two years. Source: Herald Sun A CHIROPRACTOR who gave an Essendon player hyperbaric treatment has been struck off for two years after he was found guilty of misconduct. According to findings by VCAT, South Yarra chiropractor Dr Malcolm Hooper also charged a "vulnerable" cerebral palsy patient $50,000 for unproven treatments. Dr Hooper who claims hyperbaric chambers can be used to "upregulate peptide use", was accused of using questionable and expensive oxygen therapies on 30 different conditions including cerebral palsy, cancer, multiple sclerosis, infertility and autism. He was found guilty of six different counts of misconduct and his registration was cancelled. He will not be able to reapply for his certificate for two years, unless he successfully appeals the decision. The Chiropractic Board of Australia will also hold Dr Hooper to an undertaking that he will not use hyperbaric chamber treatment on patients with 10 conditions, including adult cerebral palsy. The VCAT panel ruled that due to Dr Hooper's "zealotry and unfaulting belief" in the healing powers of oxygen therapy only a lengthy period of cancellation would protect the public. VCAT and the Australian Chiropractic Board … Continue reading
