Chiropractor struck off for 'novel' treatments

Posted: Published on August 3rd, 2013

A tribunal has cancelled the registration of a chiropractor who provided $44,000 of unproven treatments including hyperbaric oxygen to a patient with cerebral palsy. In a decision delivered on Friday the Victorian Civil and Administrative Tribunal also disqualified Malcolm Hooper from reapplying for registration as a chiropractor for two years and ordered him to pay costs for the Chiropractic Board of Australia. Essendon players also received hyperbaric treatment at Mr Hooper's South Yarra clinic, with the Australian Sports Anti-Doping Authority uncovering a bill he sent to the club late last year for more than $50,000. In June Mr Hooper was found guilty of three counts of professional misconduct and five counts of unprofessional conduct related to his treatment of a patient with cerebral palsy. Advertisement Mr Hooper provided 269 hours of hyperbaric oxygen to the patient between August 2007 and May 2008 and 79 hours of treatment on a treadmill-like device that supposedly helps the body relearn how to walk. In its decision on Friday the tribunal said Mr Hooper misrepresented the benefits of hyperbaric oxygen and treadmill treatments, believing them a panacea for more than 30 conditions including multiple sclerosis, Parkinson's disease and infertility. It said Mr Hooper had … Continue reading

Dr. Joanne Kurtzberg comments: Girl writes for first time after cord blood infusion

Posted: Published on August 1st, 2013

Complications during an oral surgery injured Grace Rosewood's brain so much so that when she celebrated her second birthday, the young girl could barely walk or even lift her head. "She was diagnosed with hypotonic cerebral palsy, so shes weak all over her body, but its not from the muscles, its from the brain," OIivia Rosewood said. "She had difficulty picking things up. She couldnt hold a pencil, and it was not just the coordination, it was the strength." So when Olivia heard about a cutting edge procedure being pioneered at Duke University using infusions of umbilical cord blood, she signed Grace up. Dr. Joanne Kurtzberg, a researcher at Duke University who was conducting a clinical trial, said the cells in cord blood may have the ability to repair damage in the body. "We are taking cord blood that parents have banked when children were born, thawing them out and washing them, and infusing them directly into the childs blood," she said. "The cells are smarter than we are. And they are attracted to areas of injuries by signals given off by the cells inside the childs body that are near the injury." Grace received three infusions of her own … Continue reading

Posted: Published on July 27th, 2013

San Diego, CA (PRWEB) July 27, 2013 http://www.resource4thepeople.com/medicalmalpractice/cerebralpalsy-lawsuit.html Resource4thePeople announced today that a newly released medical research study* has found that children who are conceived through assisted conception may be at higher risk of developing cerebral palsy or other birth defects. The findings were reported in the May 5, 2013 edition of the New England Journal of Medicine based on the research of Australian medical experts based on over 300,000 births at two infertility birth clinics. "This research shows yet another link to the development of cerebral palsy in infants," said Resource4thePeople. "Unfortunately for some families such a condition or other birth defects may also occur because of medical malpractice. "We encourage any research into the cause or cure of any birth defect and in the meantime we will continue to provide parents who may be facing the prospect of paying huge amounts of medical costs to treat their children free consultations into what their legal options are to seek compensation in cases in which medical malpractice may have been involved." The Australian study found that birth defects occurred more often when intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI) was utilized for conception as opposed to spontaneous conception. The study focused on couples … Continue reading

Bronze Medal Winning Pistol Shooter Prakash Nanjappa Develops Sudden Onset of Facial Paralysis During 4th Leg of …

Posted: Published on July 22nd, 2013

Beverly Hills, CA (PRWEB) July 22, 2013 In an article published July 9th to the Times of India, it was made public that world cup pistol shooter Prakash Nanjappa became stricken with Bells palsy, a form of facial paralysis, during competition in Granada, Spain just days ago. According to world-renowned Bells palsy expert Babak Azizzadeh, MD, FACS, and Director of the Facial Paralysis Institute in Los Angeles, the condition should resolve on its own in a matter of months. Bells palsy is a unique form of facial paralysis in that it can seemingly appear out of thin air and is caused by a virus. As quickly as it comes, it can disappear, though it is best to undergo an initial bout of steroids and antivirals to help speed recovery, said Dr. Azizzadeh, facial paralysis specialist. In most cases, Bells palsy goes away in a matter of months. After initial reports that Nanjappa was suffering from cerebral palsy, it became apparent that Bells palsy was to blame after being examined by a specialist who noted a slight droop on the right side of his face along with the inability to fully close his right eye. Bell's palsy is a diagnosis of … Continue reading

Two bodies support cerebral palsy patients

Posted: Published on July 22nd, 2013

Health News of Tuesday, 23 July 2013 Source: graphic.com.gh Team CSR Ghana, a non-governmental organisation (NGO) that supports organisations to discharge their corporate social responsibility, has partnered the Salvation Army Ghana at Agona Duakwa in the Central Region to launch an SMS short code to raise funds to build a treatment and rehabilitation centre for children and young adults with cerebral palsy. The project has already raised more than GHc50,000 with the support of corporate partners such as Vodafone and some celebrities. Mr Ato Hayford, the coordinator for rehabilitation services for the Salvation Army Ghana, said his organisation had realised the need to support children with cerebral palsy in the country. He stated that the Salvation Army could not do it all alone and, therefore, called on other benevolent organisations and the community to help the children who were often deserted and abandoned. He said mobile phone users could text CPAID to short code 1947 across all networks to donate GHc1 to support this worthy cause and also win prizes. Mr Jonathan Akuamoah, CEO and Founder of TEAM CSR Ghana, said Ghanaians had the ability to make a difference in the lives of the needy. The proposed facility, located at … Continue reading

Niamh set for life-changing London trip

Posted: Published on July 20th, 2013

The date has been set for an Angus girl to go through what could be a life-changing operation. Niamh Horton, 8, who suffers from cerebral palsy, is set to have SDR treatment on July 12 at Londons Great Ormond Street Hospital. The Strathmore Primary pupil will become one of only a handful of children in the UK to have been selected to undergo the surgery, which could radically improve her mobility. Dad Graham said: Now that we have a date for the operation, we are really excited and a little bit nervous. The good thing is Niamh is taking it in her stride. We have a half-day assessment at the end of June at GOSH. Then we are back down on July 11 with the operation the next day. We would like to thank all our fundraisers, sponsors and everyone else who has helped us to get to this point. Niamh will be the first to have the SDR operation done in the hospital. Her family, friends and school pals, as well as a few kind strangers, have been fundraising across Tayside for months now to help boost the reserves, which will be needed to provide Niamh with vital after-care … Continue reading
