Hans Von Der Brelie, Euronews: Prime Minister, the watchdog of free competition, the European Commission, has started investigations into Gazprom. Is the Russian gas supplier complying or not to fair competition in Bulgaria? Boyko Borrisov: Bulgaria was one of the EU countries most affected by the gas crisis. Back then, I was mayor of Sofia. The temperature was between 15 and 12 degrees below zero. We spent 10 to 15 days without gas and no one helped us. We are assisting the European Commission with its investigation into Gazprom. Bulgargas and Bulgartransgas handed over all the relevant documents to the Commission a few months ago. Meanwhile we learned our lesson. Thats why we have now built a gas pipeline interconnection with Romania. The interconnection with Greece is at a very advanced stage and will be completed … Continue reading

Care in detox deaths inadequate- coroner

Posted: Published on September 27th, 2012

Three patients who died after receiving treatment for drug dependency at a private Sydney health clinic were not suitable for the treatments and 'received grossly inadequate care' from staff, a coroner has found. Michael Poole, 48, Grace Yates, 24, and James Unicomb, 23 died in separate incidents after receiving rapid opioid detoxification (ROD) treatment at the Psych 'n' Soul Clinic, a private health facility at Ultimo in Sydney, between 2005 and 2010. Mr Poole, who had a long history of depression and methadone use, died in March 2008 from a ruptured brain aneurysm, identified as a berry aneurysm, three weeks after receiving the treatment at the clinic. Ms Yates, who had been taking methadone for her heroin dependency, suffered a cardiac arrest and died on November 2010 from acute bronchopneumonia following ROD treatment. Mr Unicomb, also a methadone user, died from acute toxicity from self-administered multiple drug use in December 2005. He had received a naltrexone implant, which dulls the effect of opiates. Handing down her findings at an inquest into their deaths at Glebe Coroners Court on Thursday, state coroner Mary Jerram told the court that none of the three were 'entirely suitable' for the highly expensive treatment, and … Continue reading

Drug use 'seven times higher' among gays

Posted: Published on September 24th, 2012

Whether it is a coping mechanism in the face of homophobia or just hectic partying is not clear, but new figures suggest that gay people are seven times more likely to take illegal drugs than the general population, with one in five of those surveyed showing signs of dependency on drugs or alcohol. More than a third of gay, lesbian and bisexual people took at least one illegal drug in the last month, according to the largest study of its kind. Whether drug use is a psychological crutch, a way of integrating into the "scene" or perhaps both, that figure compares to 5 per cent of the wider population who admitted using a drug in the last month in the Crime Survey for England and Wales (CSEW). Campaigners yesterday described the findings as a "wake-up call", while specialists warned that gay people risk being "excluded" from traditional drug treatment services. The report, conducted by the Lesbian and Gay Foundation (LGF) and the University of Central Lancashire, who sampled more than 4,000 people over two years, warns that there is "significant problematic substance use among lesbian, gay and bisexual people" and a risk of "substantial hidden harm". The most widely used … Continue reading

Zoning board grants drug rehab permit

Posted: Published on September 22nd, 2012

The creation of a new state chemical dependency center in Uptown Butte cleared one more hurdle at Thursdays zoning board meeting. The six board members present voted to approve a special use permit for the proposed 32-bed, three-building center, which will be built at Mercury and Oklahoma by Community, Counseling and Correctional Services. The board approved the permit with 10 standard conditions. Now, according to Mike Thatcher, chief operating officer of CCCS, the organization is waiting on final approval by the state, which will lease the building for 19 years. He said the state should have an answer in early October. Thatcher said the project would be completely privately funded and may cost as much as $6 million to build. The new treatment center will replace the aging facility at 2500 Continental Dr., which no longer meets state licensing regulations. Thatcher said keeping the center in Butte would retain about 40 jobs and would continue to provide treatment for Butte residents. The tragedy would be twofold if we dont site something here in Butte, Thatcher told the board. Two people voiced support at the meeting, including Butte-Silver Bow Commissioner Bill Anderson, who said he talked to the sheriff, an assistant … Continue reading

Expert says food 'like meth' to addicts

Posted: Published on September 20th, 2012

By Cleo Fraser Food addiction affects up to a third of Kiwis and should be treated like alcohol and drug dependency, the National Addiction Centre director says. And being deprived of certain foods can bring on symptoms similar to those of a methamphetamine or P addict coming off the drug, Professor Doug Sellman says. "What we're dealing with here is something that's coming out of this great distortion that's occurred in the modern world, this view from it being nutrition to it being recreation," he told NZ Newswire. "That shift is bringing out these compulsive disorders because we've got food that can spark addiction processes in the brain." Prof Sellman is speaking on the topic at a psychiatry conference in Wellington on Thursday. People become addicted to certain foods - mainly "the engineered food of the junk food industry - all of the foods that are moorish" - rather than food in general, he says. Once eating the food becomes a habit then a person's brain starts to drive this type of behaviour and this spirals out of control. Prof Sellman says there are no set guidelines for helping those with food addictions, but he hopes the results of a … Continue reading

Buchanan: Obama a welfare dealer

Posted: Published on September 19th, 2012

President Barack Obama is a drug dealer of welfare, conservative commentator Pat Buchanan charged in an interview with Fox Newss Greta Van Susteren Tuesday night. Barack Obama is a drug dealer of welfare, he said, speaking on On the Record with Greta Van Susteren. He wants permanent dependency, in my judgment, of all these folkssomehow getting benefits, benefits, benefits and paying no taxes. Buchanans comments came the day after a video surfaced of Mitt Romney, who, speaking at a private fundraiser in May, said 47 percent of Americans, who dont pay income tax, are dependent upon the government. Romney and some Republicans, like Buchanan, didnt back down from those comments when the controversial video came to light, saying instead that the remarks should spark a broader conversation about the role of government in citizens lives, and why the poor economy forces more people to rely on help from the government. (Also on POLITICO: Republicans split on Mitt Romney remarks) We used to have FDR talking about relief being a narcotic, a subtle destroyer of the human spirit, Buchanan said. We got to get off this welfare, is what he said. And in that sense its a narcotic. Gov. Romney is … Continue reading
