A better way out for youth gone astray

Posted: Published on June 22nd, 2012

INTHENEXT COUPLEOFMONTHS, if Attorney General Adriel Brathwaite has his way, we could be seeing established our very own Drug Treatment Court. The Attorney Generals seeming urgency in setting up this special court is rooted in the belief that it could only bring relief to, or, more importantly, save the lives of young drug-dependent Barbadians who end up before the criminal courts sometimes again and again. The insidious practice of robbery and theft to support drug dependency is not unknown. It is this circumstance that drives Mr Brathwaite to pursue the curtailment of crimes upon the person, but at the same time to offer a lifeline to the perpetrators, who are themselves victims as well. If the root cause of the crime is drug-related, the Attorney General argues, then we need to find out how we can wean more of our young men and women off drugs. Without doubt, Mr Brathwaite will need all the support he can get; and so his call for all to come on board is not unreasonable. But it will take more than a bit of passion from his supporting team. It will require every ounce of commitment. The cause will not be without its challenges, … Continue reading

The illegal drug easily found on the Internet or from dealers for less than $30 an ounce has hit the community like a tornado, said Berry, a drug treatment psychologist at Crouse Hospital. Much different than traditional bath salts, this synthetic drug is so named because its sold in crystals and appears relatively harmless. Its very frightening, said Berry who has seen usage spike in the last six months. People (on the drug) get very paranoid, she said. Theyre very easily threatened, a very high level of aggression, hard to calm. Their reality testing is so impaired, theyre not reasonable. Their reactions dont make sense. Syracuses Upstate New York Poison Center, which covers 54 Upstate counties, has seen an explosion of so-called bath salts cases. Before 2011, there hadnt been a single case reported. In 2011, there were 118 cases. This year, there have already been 165 cases through mid-June. This month, Central New York authorities have linked three high-profile cases to bath salts: The bizarre behavior of people on bath salts makes them dangerous to others. Alberta's Oil Sands and Construction Industries Launch Drug and Alcohol Risk Reduction Pilot Project

Posted: Published on June 21st, 2012

EDMONTON, ALBERTA--(Marketwire -06/20/12)- Representatives of Alberta's energy and construction industries today announced their participation in a Drug and Alcohol Risk Reduction Pilot Project (DARRPP), a two-year initiative to evaluate and report on the effectiveness of comprehensive workplace alcohol and drug programs that will include random workplace testing. DARRPP is led by a multi-stakeholder working group with broad representation that includes major oil sands industry employers and labour providers. The project's mandate is to establish best practices for random workplace alcohol and drug testing for safety sensitive sites and positions and develop guidelines for processes such as case management, assessment and follow-up. Working from a shared model, participating employers will introduce and monitor random workplace testing programs and share statistics related to their implementation. Random workplace testing will not begin immediately. Over the summer and early fall, participating companies will be putting appropriate testing systems and processes in place, with implementation of pilot testing programs expected in late 2012 and early 2013. DARRPP will report its findings and recommendations to the participants, government and other stakeholders in 2014, with a goal of recommending a useful industry policy framework based on the results of the pilot. An addict no more, says Cassopolis woman

Posted: Published on June 19th, 2012

CASSOPOLIS -- At one point, she was so strung out on meth, says Britia Anderson, that she had no hope for the future. "I got to the point where I thought an addict is all I'm ever going to be," the Cassopolis woman said. What a difference a Cass County Family Treatment Court program can make. At least, it can when participants such as Anderson apply themselves to get past their addictions. A function of Cass Probate Judge Sue Dobrich's 43rd Circuit Family Dependency Court, the program combines rigorous treatment and accountability to compel and support longtime drug users -- her drug use began in her teens, the 31-year-old Anderson said -- to change their lives. The program is effective, Dobrich said, but also limited as far as participants only because there's only so much federal grant money to go around. "We'd like to be able to do it for every parent because it works," she said. As for why it works, Dobrich said, parents in the program, like Anderson, often have lost custody of their children and know that their only chance of regaining them is to complete the program. "That's a pretty big hammer," Dobrich said. In Anderson's … Continue reading

DWI Drug Court program makes an impact

Posted: Published on June 19th, 2012

The Doa Ana County (DAC) Magistrate DWI Drug Court program is reaching out to repeat DWI offenders, and making a difference. In 1994, Judge Oscar C. Frietze co-founded the nation's first DWI Drug Court program. As an alternative to incarceration, defendants who have been found guilty of second or third DWI offenses in the community are routinely referred to participate in the program. The program is a court-centered treatment program, which realizes a team approach and works collaboratively with various agencies, to provide for a safer community, rehabilitate offenders and reduce recidivism. Through the use of various forms of cognitive behavioral therapy, participants are taught to cope with high-risk situations and make decisions from higher levels of moral judgment. "Drug courts work," said Priscilla Quiones, program coordinator and coalition partner with the Unified Prevention! (UP!) Coalition, an initiative of the Community Foundation of Southern New Mexico. "They are very effective in helping people and changing lives." The program offers intensive supervision, substance abuse counseling, random drug testing, DWI court review sessions, educational program referrals, family and parenting skills, case management services, employment and job development opportunities, community service opportunities, transitional care, gender and culturally sensitive programming, 12-step programming and assistance … Continue reading

Health & Wellness: Working Out the Kinks — Is a drug-free America possible?Published June 17, 2012

By MICHAEL QUARTARARO Michael Quartararo Its time to take a serious look at the drug problem in America. According to the CDC, for the first time in recorded U.S. history, prescription drugs killed more people than motor vehicle accidents. The latest compiled research from 2009 showed 37,485 people died from overdoses and side effects of medications compared to 36,284 deaths from traffic accidents. The CDC also released that prescription drug fatalities doubled among teens and young adults between 2000 and 2008 and tripled among people 50 to 69. Let me be very clear, these deaths are not due to illegal street drugs, the study showed that legal prescription drugs such as OxyContin, Vicodin, Xanax, and Soma were the biggest culprits. To put this in perspective, these four prescription drugs caused more deaths in the United States than cocaine and heroin. This over prescription and overuse has spilled into the teen population. From a Baltimore Sun news story: According to the White House Office of National Drug Policy, prescription drugs are second to marijuana as the drug of choice for todays teens. Seven of the top 10 drugs used by 12th graders were prescription drugs. More than 40 percent of high … Continue reading
