I-Team: Prescription drug abuse an epidemic

Posted: Published on April 26th, 2013

April 25, 2013 (WLS) -- There may be a drug addict in your house and you may be their supplier. Federal authorities call it an epidemic. Prescription drug abuse is causing overdoses and turning regular people into criminals. Popping painkillers, becoming addicted and then taking extreme measures to get more pills. Prescription drug overdoses now outnumber those of heroin and cocaine combined. David Reveles is a student at Elmhurst College. At age 14, the star wrestler began smoking marijuana and quickly moved on to prescription drugs. "Six months after my first marijuana use I dabbled into other stuff I don't even remember what I was doing, whatever I could get my hands on," he said. Reveles struggled through high school, in and out of nine treatment centers Thanksgiving 2004, an 18-wheeler hit Cheryl Edwards' car. She fractured her neck and soon became addicted to prescription painkillers. "You take pain pills for a length of time and when you go through withdrawals, that causes pain," she said. "Withdrawals cause pain. So, naturally you're going to think I'm in pain and I need a pain pill. "When you are desperate like that and you need something, I looked at pills as my … Continue reading

Passages Malibu Applauds FDA Ban on Non-Tamper-Resistant Oxycontin Generics

Posted: Published on April 24th, 2013

This week, the FDA announced that all generic forms of Oxycontin must now be produced in only tamper-resistant formulas. This ruling comes as an attempt to remedy the growing prescription drug abuse problem sweeping the nation. Malibu, CA (PRWEB) April 24, 2013 In addition to other semi-synthetic opiods, Oxycontin has been one of the most abused prescription medications in the country for years due to its high likelihood for chemical dependency and the rapidness and frequency in which users build a tolerance to its effects. In its original form, Oxycontin is easy to heat or crush, allowing people to get high faster and easily manipulate the drugs contents for recreational purposes. In 2010, Purdue Pharma, which is the company responsible for producing the drug, released a tamper-resistant formula that made the pills more difficult to alter. The FDAs ruling will go into effect immediately and will require all generic drug makers to produce only the original tamper-resistant formula first released by Purdue. We hope that this new regulation will significantly reduce Oxycontins potential for abuse and misuse, said Pax Prentiss, CEO and co-founder of The Passages Addiction Treatment Centers in Malibu and Ventura, California. At Passages, prescription drugs are now … Continue reading

King County to address substance abuse as an illness

Posted: Published on April 24th, 2013

April 24, 2013 Vol: 20 No: 17 by: Aaron Burkhalter , Staff Reporter King Countys Mental Health, Chemical Abuseand Dependency Services Division is changing how treatment providers view those with chemical addictions. Before, a relapse into drug use was a failure in the eyes of King Countys treatment services. Now, its just another step in the process. Assistant Division Director Jean Robertson said recovery operates on a spectrum. Thats why the county, and the many organizations contracted to provide treatment, will now treat chemical dependency the same as mental health as a lifelong chronic illness that requires ongoing treatment. This shift will change how the county talks about clients and trains providers. The agency is also exploring the use of more peer counseling services, meaning people who have recovered from addiction are helping the clients as well. This model is already used for mental health treatment. This will guide how the county thinks about and engages with clients but wont create new funding for chemical dependency. Its a shift in philosophy, and its a shift in culture, Robertson said. The countys health and human services funding is a fraction of what it was even five years ago. In 2006, the … Continue reading

The Collier County Bar Foundation has awarded the David Lawrence Center a $2,500 grant to fund recovery incentives for the Adult Drug Court program. The recovery incentives program provides motivation for individuals participating in the Collier County Adult Drug Court. Drug Court participants are individuals with a non-violent, drug-related felony charge for whom drug abuse or addiction is one of the motivating factors in the commission of the crime. Drug courts guide individuals with chemical dependency into treatment that will reduce drug dependence and improve the quality of life for offenders and their families. In the Drug Court program, participants are closely supervised by a variety of jurisdictions and agencies including the State Attorneys Office, the Public Defenders Office, Department of Corrections, the Drug Court Judge and the David Lawrence Center. Best practices in drug courts include providing token rewards for compliance with the purpose of shaping participant behavior in the direction of drug court goals and other positive behaviors. Editors Note: This article is part of a series produced by the Southwest Times Record in Fort Smith. The entire series will be published online at http://www.jacksonvillepatriot.com. Next: Fighting abuse a passion for Fort Smith detective. FORT SMITH Prescription drug prosecutions are now more frequent than prosecutions for methamphetamine and marijuana in both Crawford and Sebastian counties, according to prosecutors. Theres always a flux. One comes in, one disappears; another comes in, one disappears. But right now that would be the No. 1 issue with regard to narcotics, said Sebastian County Prosecutor Dan Shue. And in my perspective, theyre (prescription drugs) every bit as dangerous, and maybe more dangerous (than illicit drugs) because its like theres almost a social acceptance because it was prescribed. Crawford County Prosecutor Marc McCune said the danger of prescription drugs is also magnified because pills are so easy to get whether someone is doctor shopping or, in the case of juveniles, taking them from their parents or grandparents medicine cabinets. McCune said youths who take drugs prescribed for someone else will still rationalize theyre not as bad as illicit drugs because they were prescribed by a doctor. Minors in the juvenile system who abuse prescription … Continue reading
