DrugRisk Pradaxa Update: Litigation Grows As New Study Adds to Risks

Posted: Published on February 19th, 2013

Denver, CO (PRWEB) February 19, 2013 The medication resource center DrugRisk.com is alerting patients taking the blood thinner Pradaxa for atrial fibrillation that new information for the drug has been added to the site. Amid a new study warning of Pradaxa bleeding risks, reports show the number of patients filing legal claims for injury has increased. DrugRisk seeks to improve the safety of patients using popular drugs and medical devices by providing the latest warnings, recalls, studies and litigation news. With a drug like Pradaxa, this information can change monthly, explains DrugRisk representative Ryan Mayer. The resource center contains information that shows experts still disagree about the safety of Pradaxa. The FDA recently issued an update that the drug carries the same risks as warfarin.* However, the American College of Cardiology has warned that Pradaxa use can significantly increase the risk of bleeding complications compared to warfarin.** Now, DrugRisk has added new information from the Institute for Safe Medication Practices, which ranks anticoagulants like Pradaxa among the most dangerous of outpatient drugs. Also, in reviewing reports of bleeding submitted to the FDA, the Institute found that bleeding caused by Pradaxa is nearly 5 times as likely to result in death … Continue reading

Generic Drug Lawsuits: Bernstein Liebhard LLP Comments on Possible FDA Rule Change that Could Eliminate Pre-emption

Posted: Published on February 17th, 2013

New York, NY (PRWEB) February 16, 2013 The U.S. Food & Drug Administration (FDA) is considering a rule change that could pave the the way for individuals allegedly injured by generic versions of popular medications, including Fosamax, to pursue generic drugs lawsuits against their manufacturers, Bernstein Liebhard LLP reports. The agency recently confirmed to Reuters that it is considering a regulatory change that would allow generic manufacturers, like brand-name manufacturers, to change their labeling in appropriate circumstances. The proposed change could eliminate pre-emption of failure-to-warn claims against generic-drug manufacturers.* Generic drugs pose the same risks as their name-brand counterparts. Yet, under the current state of the law, individuals allegedly injured by generic medications are denied legal recourse, says Bernstein Liebhard LLP, a nationwide law firm representing the victims of defective drugs and medical devices. Generic Drug Lawsuits Under existing FDA regulations, generic drugs are required to carry the same label warnings as their name-brand counterparts. However, generic drug manufacturers are currently barred from altering their labels on their own. In 2011, the U.S. Supreme Court ruled in Pliva vs. Mensing that generic manufacturers could not be sued for failing to warn patients about their drugs risks, since they have no … Continue reading

Movie Review: 'Side Effects' Oozes Classic Tension

Posted: Published on February 16th, 2013

Weve all had it. That empty, helpless feeling, where everything seems like its against you. You may need a little help. Sometimes that help comes in the form of prescription drugs. Sometimes those drugs have side effects. Headaches. Nausea. Abdominal pain. Dry mouth. Involuntary murder. Emily Taylor (Rooney Mara) has just gotten her husband, Martin (Channing Tatum), back after four years in prison for insider trading. As much as she loves him and is glad to have him back in her life, she is still unhappy. She is consistently stricken with moments of severe depression, bouts that culminate one morning when she deliberately drives her car into the wall of her apartment buildings garage. While in the emergency room, she receives a consultation from Dr. Jonathan Banks (Jude Law). Emily begins therapy sessions with Banks, but every antidepressant he prescribes makes her ill. On the advice of her previous therapist, Dr. Victoria Siebert (Catherine Zeta-Jones), he prescribes a new drug called Ablixa. The drug seems like a miracle to the Taylors, as Emily appears to have returned to her old self. The only side effect is sleepwalking, for which Banks prescribes something else. One day, when he returns home, Martin … Continue reading

Charlie Brooker Q&A: the drug of tech has us hooked. What's the side-effect?

Posted: Published on February 11th, 2013

Charlie Brooker's Black Mirror asks: if the drug of modern technology has us hooked, then surely there must be side effects? Side-effects, of course, that we are yet to find out. Tonight, his thought-provoking series returns with Be Right Back, an episode in which internet presence such as social media can be used to replicate the dead -- tragic in the hands of a grieving partner. Following on from that is political-satire, The Waldo Moment, and White Bear, which takes aim at camera phone voyeurism. Here, the man himself takes us through the looking glass. Wired.co.uk: Hello, Charlie. So, from watching Black Mirror in the past, you would assume that you were quite cynical about the future of technology, but is that true? Charlie Brooker: I like technology, but Black Mirror is more what the consequences are, and it doesn't tend to be about technology itself, it tends to be how we use or misuse it. We've not really thought through the consequences of it. You know, it may all be good, but we're not quite prepared for them I spend an inordinate amount of time going from one black rectangle to the next -- whether it's a smart phone … Continue reading

Something haunted, possessed beneath surface in ‘Side Effects’

Posted: Published on February 11th, 2013

The music tells us what kind of movie Side Effects is going to be. It coils beneath what seems like a realistic plot and whispers that something haunted and possessed is going on. Imagine music for sorcery and then dial it down to ominous foreboding. Without Thomas Newmans score, this would be a lesser film, even another film. We meet an edgy young woman named Emily (Rooney Mara). Her husband, Martin (Channing Tatum), has been released after four years in prison for insider trading. Dont weep for him. At a party he explains, Its the culture. They resume. They dine. They make eager love. Things dont go for her as smoothly as it seemed. She is referred to a psychiatrist named Banks (Jude Law). Shes been under care before, with a shrink named Victoria Siebert (Catherine Zeta-Jones), but Banks thinks she may get good results from a new drug named Ablixa. Also, a drug company has paid him $50,000 to study it during the licensing period. This Banks has issues. A Brit in Manhattan, hes divorced from a dubious woman (Vinessa Shaw). He immigrated to the U.S., he explains, because in the U.K. when you run into psychiatric treatment its … Continue reading
