U.S. task force recommends against routine PSA screening for prostate cancer

Posted: Published on May 25th, 2012

TORONTO Routinely screening men for prostate cancer with PSA tests can result in far more harm than good, says a U.S. expert panel in a recommendation against the practice that is sure to fuel continued debate over the issue. On Monday, the U.S. Preventive Services Task Force released its final recommendation, advising against routine PSA blood tests to detect possible prostate cancer, the third most common cause of cancer death in North American males after lung and colorectal cancer. Having an elevated level of PSA, or prostate-specific antigen, can flag the presence of cancer. But it can also be a sign of a benign enlarged prostate or infection, and most men who have a biopsy in response to an abnormal PSA test dont end up having cancer. Often when prostate cancer is found through screening, the tumour is small and too slow-growing to be harmful, and many men end up dying of another cause. Yet theres no way of knowing which tumours are potentially deadly requiring aggressive treatment and which are not. Almost all men with PSA-detected prostate cancer opt to receive treatment. Besides complications from the biopsy, there can also be serious adverse effects from treatment. Its important for … Continue reading

Healthy Memphis: Get handle on high blood pressure to avoid disease

Posted: Published on May 21st, 2012

What you should know High blood pressure is often a silent killer that leads to heart and vascular disease. Adults in Tennessee, Mississippi, Arkansas and Alabama are more likely to have high blood pressure (hypertension) than those in other states. Hypertension is often not felt. Many people don't know when their blood pressure is high. Hypertension can lead to heart attacks and strokes, major causes of death in the Mid-South. Hypertension can also destroy kidneys and lead to birth defects in newborns. Surprisingly, many children in the Mid-South develop hypertension in their youth. Excess calorie intake and weight increase their health risks. Daily stress from poor living conditions also contributes to their risk of hypertension. If a kid develops high blood pressure, it's likely the child will continue to have high blood pressure as an adult. Your blood pressure is measured by two numbers - when you heart is beating (the systolic pressure or top measure) and when your heart is at rest between beats (the diastolic pressure or bottom number.) For most adults, a blood pressure below 120 over 80 (120/80) is the ideal blood pressure. Many people with prediabetes and type 2 diabetes have hypertension, high triglycerides, and … Continue reading

Stress of trying for a baby can cause men 'impotence and lead to adultery'

Posted: Published on May 21st, 2012

By Tom Goodenough and Tamara Cohen PUBLISHED: 05:32 EST, 20 May 2012 | UPDATED: 01:58 EST, 21 May 2012 Any couple trying for a baby is told that timing is everything. But pressure to perform when their partner is at her most fertile drives men away, according to research. One in ten men has had an affair because of the pressure of rigorously timed sessions, while four out of ten claimed it made them impotent. Trying for a baby is a joyful time for any couple, but it may also be linked to impotency More than 400 men took part in the study, which found the pressure to conceive a baby caused men acute stress. Fertility experts routinely tell couples to time intercourse to coincide with the window when a woman is ovulating. There are even highly sensitive devices designed to help couples work out down to the minute when she is at her most fertile. But as the number of timed sex sessions increased so did the mens level of stress, according to the research carried out in South Korea. None of the men in the study had ever had sexual problems. Viagra helps Swedish gangs get profits up

Posted: Published on May 21st, 2012

Viagra appears to have replaced cocaine as the drug of choice for Swedish motorcycle gangs looking to profit from the illegal drugs trade. Peddling drugs like counterfeit Viagra provides gangsters with tidy profits without the same sort of risks involved in smuggling and selling cocaine or heroin. "The fact that organized crime has become increasingly interested in this is due to the high profitability and the weak sentences," Tomas Nilsson, an investigator with the Swedish Medical Products Agency (Lkemedelsverket), told the paper. According to DN, the Hells Angels motorcycle gang is believed to be a major player in the sale of Viagra after a raid on a club house in Uppsala last year uncovered a huge stash of impotency medication. While criminal gangs can double their money by cocaine, illegally imported impotency or diet drugs can yield profits of up to 2,400 percent, according to the newspaper's estimates. Stopping the flow of illegal pills into Sweden is difficult for customs officials, whose hands are tied from inspecting packages which are sent from within the European Union due to a loophole in the regulations. "We've drawn attention to this, but nothing happens. There has to be a change in the law," … Continue reading

The Occupiers leave the building

Posted: Published on May 12th, 2012

May Day was supposed to have been a big moment for the Occupy Wall Street movement. As millions of angry Europeans took to the streets, the Occupiers urged Canadians and Americans to turn out too. They called for a general strike of students and workers, as well as a total shopping ban. It was supposed to be A Day Without the 99 Per Cent. Did you notice? Me neither. In Toronto, where the action kicked off at Nathan Phillips Square, the CBC reported that the police outnumbered the crowd. At the Ontario Legislature, a few protesters dug an illicit garden and planted peas. Across Canada, the streets were remarkably quiet except for Montreal, where students protesting against tuition hikes, some with balaclavas and bricks, were wreaking their usual havoc. There were other nasty moments. In San Francisco, black-clad activists trashed the Mission District, smashing windows with crowbars, spattering storefronts with eggs and paint, and spray-painting anarchy symbols on parked cars. Their targets were not greedy banks and big corporations, but small shops, restaurants and a housing project. This just seems like theyre frustrated with their impotency at this point, Jeremy Tooker, owner of Fourbarrel Coffee, told the San Francisco Chronicle. … Continue reading

O'Shaughnessy in BGT semis

Posted: Published on May 7th, 2012

Ryan O'Shaughnessy will progress to the Britain's Got Talent semi-finals, it has been confirmed. Last night's final auditions saw the Dubliner getting slapped on the wrist by judge Simon Cowell about the singer-songwriter's contractual conflict with The Voice of Ireland. O'Shaughnessy, whose love song No Name went viral following his first audition for BGT (see performance here) had been booted off The Voice of Ireland after his debut appearance. But all's well that ends well and the 19-year is now in the shake-up for the big prize on BGT. "I'm over the moon to be through to the semi-finals," O'Shaughnessy told ITV's Britain's Got Talent site. "I was contracted to do another show, but I've since been released from my contract. "I want to thank the judges for giving me a second chance. The reveal was such an emotional ordeal for me. I was fraught with nerves. I felt as though I'd let Simon down. Simon's somebody you want to please, so it felt awful to disappoint him. "I'm looking forward to the live shows. I've been working on new material and focusing on the music." The Britain's Got Talent semi-finals begin tonight (May 6) and run through until Thursday … Continue reading

Newton-John: Grease was life-changing

Posted: Published on May 7th, 2012

Olivia Newton-John has described her 1978 movie, Grease, as a life-changing experience. The 63-year-old actress and singer spoke of her life-long friendship with John Travolta and discovering in her thirties that her father had been a secret agent, in an interview with the Observer newspaper. "Grease was a life-changing experience that I'm reminded of constantly," she said. "The best thing I took from it is lifelong friendships - John [Travolta] and I are still mates to this day. Newton-John said how motherhood had changed her but also how the advice of her own mother guided her through life. "My mother always said: 'Never rely on any man to take care of you.' She drummed that into me from an early age. It's the one piece of advice that has carried me through life." The cancer survivor also recalled how her recovery had given her a new perspective on life. "Cancer was enlightening. When you're ill, it doesn't matter if you have all the money in the world - it makes no difference. I feel very blessed to have been given the chance to live." Newton-John has recently published a cookbook, Livwise: Easy Recipes for a Healthy, Happy Life. See the … Continue reading

New over-the-counter sperm test claims to help men test their fertility

Posted: Published on May 7th, 2012

4 Your Health By Courtny Gerrish, Tim Meulemans CREATED May. 4, 2012 Over 11 million couples try to have a baby each year. Half of those couples have fertility issues. For a man, going to the doctor to get checked out can be rough. Can a new take-home test deliver accurate results? Milwaukee resident Darin Rosenvold tells us, "You know what, honestly, I probably needed this 6 months ago." When Darin and his wife wanted to start a family it didn't happen right away. He wishes he would have had a home fertility test. "It easily outweighs the embarassment that it takes to look into a nurses eyes and she knows, and you know, exactly what you're going to be doing in that private room," Darin exclaims. A home test gives you the privacy. That's why SpermCheck's CEO Ray Lopez says his product is perfect. "You can do it in the privacy of your own home, and you might even have a little bit of fun while you're doing it, and in ten minutes, you're going to find out if there is an issue or not," Lopez says. Trashed Mission District businesses want answers

Posted: Published on May 2nd, 2012

Business owners in San Francisco's Mission District, cleaning up after a night in which protesters damaged more than 30 stores and restaurants and vandalized cars, questioned Tuesday why activists had singled them out and why police hadn't done more to halt the rampage. Among those dealing with the damage were officers at the neighborhood police station, where black-clad, masked activists threw paint and bashed the front door Monday night. Even as they defended themselves from criticism that they had allowed the vandals to run wild - one restaurant owner said officers even appeared to be "escorting" the group - high-level police officials met to find a better way to handle out-of-control crowds. The protesters split away at 9 p.m. from an Occupy rally in Dolores Park that was held in advance of Tuesday's May Day actions. Traveling down 18th Street and onto Valencia Street, they smashed windows with crowbars and signs, threw paint and eggs on buildings and spray-painted anarchy symbols on the hoods of parked cars. "All I heard was, 'bang, bang, bang,' and some dude had the valet sign, trying to break our window," said Adam Koskoff, manager of the Locanda restaurant on Valencia. "I didn't even see … Continue reading

California man sues BMW for persistent erection

Posted: Published on May 2nd, 2012

SAN FRANCISCO (WBTV) - A California man has filed a lawsuit against a motorcycle maker and a motorcycle seat maker after he claims he suffered injuries that hurt his sexual life. Henry Wolf, 52, claims he suffered the injury during a four-hour motorcycle ride in May 2010, according to a lawsuit filed in California last week. The lawsuit says Wolf was riding his 1993 BMW motorcycle, which was fitted with a Corbin-Pacific seat, when he suffered a severe case of priapism - a persistent lasting erection. "My client has suffered a serious injury; a complete erection for a year and a half," lawyer Vernon Bradley from Sausalito, California told WBTV on Monday afternoon. "Now he suffers from impotency." Bradley says Wolf got medical opinions from three different doctors, including an expert on priapism from the University of California-San Francisco. According to the lawsuit, Wolf claims his injury was caused by the "ridge-like seat on his motorcycle" which he claims was "negligently designed, manufactured and/or installed by the defendants." Wolf claims he's suffered from the long lasting erections for 20-months after the injury occurred. "He is now unable to engage in sexual activity, which is causing him substantial emotional and mental … Continue reading
