2012 Volkswagen Tiguan review

Posted: Published on June 11th, 2012

On the road and in the streets we take the 2012 Volkswagen Tiguan for a spin. Is it worth the price of admission, or does it buckle under the weight of its lofty ambitions? Find out in our review of the 2012 Volkswagen Tiguan. The 2012 Volkswagen Tiguan isnt your typical blue collar crossover. In fact, it seems the recent trend within Volkswagen sees the company attempting to occupy a rather unique space just above the standard automotive segment and just below the luxury segment inhabited by its corporate sibling, Audi. By doing so, or at least trying to do so, the German automaker is attempting to differentiate itself from the rabble, and at the same time elevate the VW brand above the competition. A quick glance at the 2012 Volkswagen Tiguan and youll see a perfect example of this strategy. Is it a smart move? It certainly has potential. But it requires a deft hand and comes at a price. The real question, in this instance, is whether or not consumers are willing to pay a premium for what is ostensibly a fairly standard compact SUV. Nevertheless, while the Tiguan offers up an engaging ride compliments of our review … Continue reading

Posted: Published on June 11th, 2012

Mumbai, June 10 : The Kokilaben Dhirubhai Ambani Hospital and Medical Research Institute here set another benchmark in advanced medicare by introducing da Vinci robotic surgery Sunday. Inaugurated by an eminent doctor, Suresh Advani, the new cutting edge system aids in overcoming the limitations of keyhole (laparoscopic) surgery and enhances capabilities to perform the most complicated and delicate procedures. "The precision offered by the da Vinci robotic system ensures greater surgical precision, improved dexterity and superior control, translating into smaller incisions, less blood loss and quicker recovery," said hospital's executive director Ram Narain. He said that till date 11 successful surgeries have been performed, of which, none required blood transfusion and all the patients were discharged within a few days after the surgery. The da Vinci system enables complex surgical procedures of all types to be performed through 1-2 cm incisions. Offering multi-specialty applications, it is designed to be used for multi-organ surgeries, including treatment of cancers of prostate, urinary bladder, kidney, uterus and cervix. In cases of radical prostatectomy performed using the robotic surgical system, the incidence of urinary incontinence and impotency is significantly reduced as compared to the conventional methods of surgery. Women write better sex, says Martin Amis

Posted: Published on June 11th, 2012

By Daily Mail Reporter PUBLISHED: 21:36 EST, 10 June 2012 | UPDATED: 03:44 EST, 11 June 2012 Women are better writers when it comes to sex scenes, the novelist Martin Amis has admitted. The 62-year-old said women were more likely to write about the reality of sex, complete with its awkward 'fiascos and no-shows', while men chose to avoid them. He added that male authors were dogged by their fears of impotency, a weakness from which women were free, allowing them to write better about sex. Praise: Martin Amis, pictured with his wife Isabel Fonseca, has said women write better sex scenes during an appearance at the Hay Festival The author, who over the years has faced accusations of being a misogynist, also said women were more 'sincere' when it came to expressing emotion and had more 'song' in their writing. Strong words: Mr Amis also dismissed David Cameron as a 'pretty-boy, privileged technocrat' 'I'd say the reason why women write better about sex which is almost impossible to write about and no one has done it very well, ever is that as a novelist you are in a God-like relation to what you create,' he said. 'You are omnipotent … Continue reading

Euro 2012 Day 2: 5 Takeaways from Group B Round 1

Posted: Published on June 10th, 2012

By defeating the Netherlands in a fixture few gave them a chance in, Denmark proved what many onlookers of the sport had suspected for some time: The Danes are for real, and they will decide whoescapes the Group of Death. Perhaps caught up in the prospect of facing their two hated rivals in the coming days, the Netherlands overlooked Denmark, even though they had been warned one major tournament beforehand. The Dutch and Danes opened up Group E of World Cup 2010, and although the Netherlands emerged victorious 2-0, Denmark acquitted themselves well against the favored Oranje. If not for Daniel Aggers own goal and the electricity of flying Dutchman Eljero Elia, the tale could have been different. Fast forward to Euro 2012, the Danes certainly conceded heaps of shots and possession to their Orange opponents, but led in ultimately the only statistic that matters: goals. Michael Krohn-Dehli collected a deflected cross from a streaking Simon Poulsen, sprinted past the Dutch defense and placed his shot right between the legs of Maarten Stekelenburg for the games only goal. The move exemplified Denmarks overarching philosophy of pragmatic football. They were out-shot, out-possessed and out-gunned, yet they emerged victorious with straightforward passing, … Continue reading

Why David Simon is wrong about paywalls

Posted: Published on June 5th, 2012

Let me count the ways. Ten, in fact. David Simon is a talented writer and storyteller, but is he qualified to give advice to publishers about how to save their dying industry? As qualified as anybody else, I suppose. But when he suggested in a recent piece for CJR that people like me who disagree with his position on paid content were unqualified, that got under my skin a bit. Simon wrote, These folks (paywall opponents) dont understand the first thing about actual journalism. He also lumped us in with an imaginary crowd of people who supposedly think amateurs can replace professionals, though we take no such position. To Simons credit, he engaged readers in comments on his CJR piece, but the conversation turned more into a quibble over the definition of ad hominem than a dialogue about the important issues facing newspapers. I decided to step back and lay out my thoughts in a more organized fashion. First, Simon and I agree: that journalism is important. That newspapers giving their content away for free online is a bad idea. That investigative/enterprise journalism is expensive. That the beat system plays an important role in watchdog journalism, and beat journalism requires … Continue reading

THE EDUCATED UNEDUCATED: High in education, low in virtue

Posted: Published on June 5th, 2012

Who would have expected the rise of a group of educated people who behave as if it has not received an education. This group of so-called educated people, who lack road manners, table manners and all manner of decent, rational behaviour, is slowly dominating the political, economic and social scenes. Virtues such as civility, decency, courtesy and chivalry once held close to ones heart are fast disappearing and instead, uncouthness, selfishness and outrageousness are the order of the day. These things were unseen and unheard of in the past. I, too, am wondering if our education system has failed us. Perhaps our educational philosophy, which takes into consideration the all-round development of students in the physical, intellectual, emotional, and spiritual domains, is derailed and starting to make us eat humble pie. There could be umpteen reasons and speculations for the rise of this educated uneducated phenomenon but my reasoning is that we have to backtrack to the roots or essence of education, re-examine our philosophy of education and ask ourselves why there are people subscribing to physical incompetency, intellectual lunacy, emotional impotency and spiritual bankruptcy. Someone once said that when our secret intentions are righteous, our outer conduct will be … Continue reading

High in education, low in virtue

THE oxymoron, a self-contradictory proposition, used in the heading of A. Kathirasen's column, "Rise of the educated uneducated" (NST, May 31), though semantically incompatible, is in hindsight apt and accurate. Who would have expected the rise of a group of educated people who behave as if it has not received an education. This group of so-called educated people, who lack road manners, table manners and all manner of decent, rational behaviour, is slowly dominating the political, economic and social scenes. Sound Off! (June 3)

Posted: Published on June 3rd, 2012

So there is a little smoke in the air. You can thank the Forest Service, the BLM, and all the tree huggers, lizard lovers, wolf lovers and the spotted owl freaks. They don't want logging, grazing or roads. Nature started the fire. Let nature take its course and let it burn itself out. What's a little smoke? This whole wilderness thing is really a big problem and you can see the results of forest mismanagement and wilderness mismanagement in the Gila. That place is burning up because they would not allow logging or grazing or controlled burns or any access. The fire could have been stopped but there was no access to the area where the lightning hit. Airline fuel and manpower that Obama uses to gallivant around the country should instead best be used to put out the Gila Forest fire. We need more red light cameras and we need to hook up the ones that we have. The people running red lights are dangerous and they are breaking the law and if they are caught on camera, why shouldn't they pay? Please do something about the weather page for the air quality. For the past several days you … Continue reading

The role of raisins in sexual health

Posted: Published on June 2nd, 2012

Including raisins in your everyday diet is a great way to ensure that your sexual health is on track! Raisins are packed with many essential nutrients that play an important role in keeping an individual sexually active and thriving. Raisins are rich in Vitamin A, selenium, potassium, iron and Vitamin B, and they also contain high levels of arginine and polyphenolic phytonutrients. In the following pages, we elaborate upon how each of these is important when it comes to sex. The role of Vitamin A in sexual health Studies have shown that Vitamin A deficiency can cause impotency. This is because it plays a very important role in progesterone synthesis -- and progesterone controls the entire menstrual cycle in women. Vitamin A also helps in keeping the inner lining of a woman's vagina and uterus healthy, without any damage. This nutrient plays a key role in maintaining epithelial tissues and women should include raisins in their diet for this very reason. In males, Vitamin A deficiency can cause atrophy in the testicles and decrease the overall production of sex hormones. Tik and HIV: A ticking time bomb

Posted: Published on May 25th, 2012

A study by the Centre for Health and Prevention Studies at New York University has found that the use of tik leads to dangerous sexual behaviour. Studies have shown that tik users have more sexual partners. (David Harrison, M&G) The street drug crystal methamhpetamine, known as tik in South Africa, increases the chance of men who have sex with men to contract HIV by 400%, according to a US study. But according to Hetta Gouse, a neuropsychologist in the psychiatry and mental health department at the University of Cape Town (UCT), the impact of tik addiction on HIV infections in South Africa is likely to extend far beyond this group. While men who have sex with men are the main consumers of the substance in America, in South Africa it is also used in high numbers by heterosexual men and women. The figures are the highest in the Western Cape and KwaZulu-Natal. Gouse is conducting a study on the rate of HIV infections among tik users in the Western Cape. Over the past decade there has been a drastic increase in tik abuse in the Western Cape: whereas only 0.3% of Cape Town patients admitted to rehabilitation centres reported tik … Continue reading
