Olivia Newton-John has described her 1978 movie, Grease, as a life-changing experience.

The 63-year-old actress and singer spoke of her life-long friendship with John Travolta and discovering in her thirties that her father had been a secret agent, in an interview with the Observer newspaper.

"Grease was a life-changing experience that I'm reminded of constantly," she said. "The best thing I took from it is lifelong friendships - John [Travolta] and I are still mates to this day.

Newton-John said how motherhood had changed her but also how the advice of her own mother guided her through life.

"My mother always said: 'Never rely on any man to take care of you.' She drummed that into me from an early age. It's the one piece of advice that has carried me through life."

The cancer survivor also recalled how her recovery had given her a new perspective on life. "Cancer was enlightening. When you're ill, it doesn't matter if you have all the money in the world - it makes no difference. I feel very blessed to have been given the chance to live."

Newton-John has recently published a cookbook, Livwise: Easy Recipes for a Healthy, Happy Life.
