Addiction to prescriptions becoming epidemic in Indiana

Posted: Published on February 5th, 2013

INDIANAPOLIS - With a young son and a fianc, 21-year-old Lora Socks of Fishers now has a lot to live for. It was not always that way. When Socks was 16, she struggled with culture shock after transferring to a public school from a private Christian school. Her family was dealing with health and financial issues. "Basically, I got overwhelmed with life and I didn't want to feel the way I was feeling, so I opted to live in oblivion and numbness," said Socks, who turned to alcohol and prescription drugs. "The first time I did a prescription drug, I got really sick and it wasn't pleasant. I was, like, 'I'm never going to do that again.' And then, the next day, I was getting more from the same friend and I instantly had a feeling I was an alcoholic and an addict, because I know that was not normal thinking. I just kept using and everything spiraled out of control." She says she began to hang out with the wrong crowd that gave her prescription drugs that fed her growing habit. "When I was using, I would use anything and everything. I would alternate between Fentanyl, Morphine, Vicodin, Xanax, … Continue reading

Like prescriptions, death certificates too are illegible

Posted: Published on February 3rd, 2013

It's not just the doctors' presription that is illlegible. It seems the doctors can't write even the 'death certificate' properly. The directorate of economics and statistics, which comes under chief registrar of births and deaths, says it is finding difficulty in compiling the data relating to the cause of death. And one of the main reasons is difficulty in deciphering the doctors' scribbles. The death certificate is issued by the government/ private hospitals and nursing homes stating the exact cause of death of a person. According to a directorate official, Quite often, the death certificates are not filled completely, while some hospitals do not even send us these certificates. The directorate not only has to cope with insufficient information, but also put up with discrepancies committed by the hospitals. These may include writing the cause (of death) in abbreviations, unclear, non-sequential causes, a detailed summary instead of the exact cause of death. If the deceased is a female of child-bearing age, the details of pregnancy is mandatory, but it is not followed, said a senior directorate official. Whether it is a prescription or a death certificate, the doctors have been asked to write legibly, he said. Take, for example, the … Continue reading

Prescriptions in homes for sale targeted

Posted: Published on January 31st, 2013

SAN DIEGO - The number of San Diegans selling their homes is on the rise. But before you hang that "for sale" sign in front of your home, 10News has a warning for you. Many people hide valuables such as jewelry when potential home buyers go through their home. Now, real estate agents also advise hiding your prescription medications. Kevin Burke, who is on the board of directors for the Greater San Diego Association of Realtors, told 10News thieves are pairing up and targeting open houses. "One will distract or engage the real estate agent. The other will wander through property and take things," he said. "Right now, they just know to go for medicine. They know where it's going to be and most people keep it in their master bathroom medicine cabinet." The pills are as easy to hide as they are easy to sell on the street. "Almost impossible to trace that's what they're looking for, something they can get rid of pretty quickly," said Burke. Selling prescription medication on the street is big business. These days, a single Oxycontin pill can go for $50 to $80. Real estate agents said it is hard to say how widespread … Continue reading

Study shows adult prescriptions not always helpful for children’s migraines

Posted: Published on January 30th, 2013

A drug-free placebo pill prevents migraines in children and teens just as well as most headache medicines, according to a new study. Researchers, whose study was published in JAMA Pediatrics, found that only two drugs known to help migraine-plagued adults reduced the frequency of childrens headaches better than a placebo. Even in those cases the effect was small a difference of less than one headache per month compared to the dummy pills. According to data from the Cleveland Clinic, about 2 per cent of young children and 7 to 10 per cent of older children and teenagers up to age 15 get migraines. No drugs have been rigorously tested and approved for preventing migraines in children, so doctors have to rely on medicine for adults, experts said. All the drugs in our analysis have been found effective in adults with migraine headaches, but few were beneficial among children, wrote study leader Jeffrey Jackson from the medical College of Wisconsin in Milwaukee, and colleagues. This suggests there may be something different about pediatric migraines or that the response to treatment differs between children and adults. In the study, Jackson and his colleagues looked at 21 trials comparing headache drugs to each … Continue reading

Online vs. Office: Michigan residents get prescriptions via online medical service

Posted: Published on January 26th, 2013

We are in the middle of cold and flu season and while many will pick up the phone to schedule a doctor's appointment, people in Michigan now have the option of just going online. A Minnesota-based company is now offering a 24/7 online medical service to people in Michigan. Sharon Garner is in and out of the doctor's office all the time. "10 months into remission," says Garner who survived 3rd stage colon cancer, "but I still have to see an oncologist quite regularly." So, the last thing Garner wants to do is sit in the waiting room for hours when all she has is a cold. "And then you are taking your chances on getting sicker than what you really would be anyway," she says. Garner likes the idea of clicking on a website to get a diagnosis and prescription. And now, she can. People living in Michigan now have access to Virtuwell.com. It is a 24/7 online clinic that treats common conditions like bladder infections and sinus infections. "We ask the same questions that you would expect from a doctor's office, but we do it online," says Kevin Palattao, the Vice President of Patient Care Systems and http://www.Virtuwell.com. … Continue reading

An Oregon Democrat's doomed plan to require prescriptions for cigarettes

Posted: Published on January 26th, 2013

MitchGreenlickwants to put cigarettes in the same category as LSD and steroids It's hard to argue that cigarettes are good for you. But should getting your hands on a cancer stick really land you behind bars? That's the apparent dream of Oregon Rep. Mitch Greenlick, whose latest proposed bill would make cigarettes a Schedule III controlled substance (like LSD and steroids), meaning that it would be illegal to possess or distribute them without a doctor's prescription. Those who get caught under this proposal would suffer a fine of $6,250 and/or up to a year in prison. Sure, the law may sound extreme especially coming from a state that nearly legalized recreational marijuana a few months ago but don't start hoarding your smokes just yet. Even Rep. Greenlick is admittedly skeptical about the bill's future. It's almost certain to go down in flames at the hands of tobacco lobbyists. The bill is more likely a symbolic act: Greenlickhopes that the inevitable death of his bill will at least bolster the possibility of passing a less-extreme anti-smoking bill, which would seek to tax cigarettes. And that's probably for the best, saysEllis E. Conklin atSeattleWeekly. After all, what kind of doctor is going to say, … Continue reading

Scottish Independence Yes Campaign Glasgow Launch Dennis Canavan – Video

Scottish Independence Yes Campaign Glasgow Launch Dennis Canavan Dennis Canavan relates his experiences of travelling down to and back from Westminster as a Labour MP and arriving on the early morning sleeper which he found a misnomer because he couldn't sleep on them and would feel the need to go to bed once he got home. But there were often duties to be done in the constituency and outside at that time. He was often invited by the students in Glasgow University Labour Club. At that time in the 70s GU Labour Club felt itself to be a very radical outfit, very anti-establishment. In fact they were so anti-establishment and so radical and so left-wing that they didn't even participate in the debates with other students. It was clearly a reaction to a previous era of Labour politicians who graduated from there in the 50s and 60s including the late John Smith and Donald Dewar and because Smith and Dewar used to get dressed up in a suit and a bow tie and take part in debates but the students of the 60s and 70s reacted against this and said they wanted nothing to do with these establishment … Continue reading
