Patients coming to see Dr. James Cocores will be disappointed to discover he's not in his Boca Raton office Friday. Instead, the psychiatrist is in jail. MUGSHOTS: Who Got Arrested In South Florida? Cocores was arrested late Thursday and taken to the Palm Beach County Jail on charges of trafficking in opium and writing an unlawful prescription for at least $1,000 worth of dangerous drugs. Boca Raton police said an undercover officer posing as a patient sought prescription medication and counseling for a traumatic event. Police said Cocores prescribed multiple medications to her, including Xanax, Vicodin, Percocet and Oxycodone, over several months, even though he never gave her a physical examination or took any vital statistics. Cocores specializes in drug abuse treatment and opiate addiction. WPBF 25 News' Terri Parker reported that Cocores is a psychiatrist and neurologist with 33 years of experience, according to online doctor biographies. He once wrote an article claiming "obesity is a disease of the brain." Also, Cocores went to medical school in the Domincan Republic, according to the Palm Beach County Sheriff's Office booking blotter. He was released on bond. Prescription painkillers like Oxycontin and Percocet are the leading drugs involved in U.S. overdose deaths, most of which are accidental. Fatal drug overdoses continue to rise in the U.S. Most are accidental and involve prescription painkillers such as OxyContin and Percocet. Published: Feb. 20, 2013 at 1:24 PM According to research published Tuesday from the National Center for Health Statistics, 38,329 people died of drug overdoses in the United States in 2010, up from the previous year and the latest in a series of studies showing fatal trends involving prescription painkillers. In 2010, 57% of overdoses, or more than 22,000, involved known prescription drugs. Three-quarters of those involved painkillers like Oxycontin and Percocet while another 9,400 involved unidentified drug combinations. More than 74% of all prescription drug deaths were accidental. Only 17% of overdoses were determined suicides. Drugs in the opioid family, like Oxycontin, methadone and codeine, were often present in fatal drug cocktails. An opioid was found in 77% of overdoses that involved benzodiazepine, a depressant like Valium, Xanax or Ativan. Bill proposes prescriptions for cold medicines

GREENVILLE, SC (FOX Carolina) - Angie Steadman is a former meth addict who has turned her life around. "Once I tried it, and got into it then it was very addictive. I was addicted immediately," Steadman said. Users said the drug is easy to get and easy to make. They make meth by using pseudoephedrine, which is a decongestant found in cold medicine. "I got caught up in a pretty heavy, heavy duty situation as a result of some of those things. As a result, I was involved with people that were involved with meth manufacture," Steadman said. "I was doing things I would have never done in my right mind," Steadman said. "Then it got to the point where you could only buy two at a time." And now to try and crack down on meth makers, Upstate Sen. Mike Fair, R-Greenville, introduced a bill that would make all medicine with pseudoephedrine prescription only. "It isn't the product, it's the chemicals the products combined with that can be extrapolated and used," Fair said. Back in 2010, lawmakers passed a bill that put limits on how much pseudoephedrine can be bought by one person. Customers must show ID and their … Continue reading

It focused on patients with dyslipidaemia (high cholesterol), type 2 diabetes and hypothyroidism. Chris Langley, who headed the research, said: "This study provided an intriguing insight into adherence behaviour within an inner-city population, whilst the focus group data provided context and understanding of the barriers to adherence from the patients' perspective." The report recommended that more information should be provided about patients taking medication for long-term conditions to make it easier to identify those who may require greater support from doctors. Doctors should note a patient's first language and religion, it said, and drugs companies told to provide clearer information that can be understood by all patients. The issue is likely to become even more important as care is transferred from hospitals to the community and patients are given greater responsibility for their own treatment at home. Meanwhile a study by London South Bank University, published in December, estimated that four in ten adults are unable to understand and use everyday health literature effectively. A few years ago I was lucky enough to attend a conference in the beautiful city of Amsterdam. After getting up my name badge and picking through the obligatory bag of SWAG I spotted a handwritten note with my name on it. On closer inspection the note was from the conference organisers thanking me for attending and giving me a few tips on how I could get the most out of the event. Of course everyone had a hand written note, but the warm and fuzzy feeling it gave me for a few moments was worth the ticket price alone; it was a really nice welcome, and one Ive always remembered. The personal touch is especially important within ecommerce Consider this, with online sales growing at an exponential rate the digital high street is a congested place. Just last week I received five deliveries from various companies, everything from printer toner, to a birthday gift for my wife. Looking back at those items I struggle to recall who I bought them from; it all becomes a blur and its a term I'm calling merchant ambivalence. New River doctor goes on trial over unregistered prescriptions – www.roanoke.com

Posted: Published on February 12th, 2013

Linda Sue Cheek A New River Valley doctor was likened to a drug dealer Monday as her trial began on charges of illegally distributing pain medications to her patients. In opening statements to a jury in Roanoke's federal court, Assistant U.S. Attorney Jennie Waering described how Linda Sue Cheek prescribed drugs either without a valid DEA registration or by using that of another doctor. Cheek did not accept insurance, charging her new patients $150 and then additional fees for up to a three-month supply of painkillers. "That sounds like a drug dealer," Waering said. "More drugs for more cash." In a trial expected to last at least two weeks, Cheek is facing a 173-count indictment that charges her with illegally prescribing drugs at New River Medical Associates, a pain management practice she ran in Dublin. Defense attorney Shawn Potter described Cheek, 64, as a doctor with good intentions who became confused by complicated government regulations. Cheek is charged with distributing a variety of pain medications - including oxycodone and hydrocodone - without holding a valid certificate from the Drug Enforcement Administration. In 2008, the Virginia Board of Medicine suspended Cheek's license after she was convicted of health care fraud for … Continue reading

euronews interview -'Nuclear weapons against our beliefs' says Iran's foreign minister http://www.euronews.com Iran's foreign minister Ali Akbar Salehi has been speaking to euronews on the margins of a security conference in Munich. The former head of the Atomic Energy Organisation of Iran, Salehi answered questions about Israel, nuclear enrichment, and the situation in Syria. James Franey, euronews: "Iranian Foreign Minister Ali Akbar Salehi, thank you very much for being with us here on euronews. Iran and Syria say they are going to respond to the reported Israeli air strike on a Syrian weapons base. Is that true?" Ali Akbar Salehi: "Well, I have never heard of anyone saying that we will be responding, but what we have said is that what Israel has done is a serious issue. This air strike, I would call it an intervention (aimed at) inflicting harm on another country and another people, is not allowed by international conventions and by UN conventions. So what Israel has committed is against international rules and regulations and it may have serious consequences." JF, euronews: "Such as?" Ali Akbar Salehi: "When I say serious consequences - Syria is in a very sensitive region and if … Continue reading
