WEST HARTFORD A blind civil rights attorney, marathon runner and triathlete will speak at Chabad House on Monday, Jan. 27. Richard Bernstein "will share his powerful life story of challenges and successes, his passion for sports and his dedication to fighting legal battles on behalf of individuals with disabilities," according to a news release from Chabad of Greater Hartford, which is hosting the event with local organization Friendship Circle. "Blind since birth and born with Retinitis Pigmentosa, Richard is a graduate of the University of Michigan and Northwestern University School of Law. He is an attorney with The Sam Bernstein Law Firm in Farmington Hills, Mich.," according to the release. "Richard is a nationally recognized advocate for disabled rights, providing a voice to those who would otherwise be forced to be silent. He has won numerous lawsuits, never charged nor sued for money - only for positive change." Bernstein has completed eight New York City marathons and 10 other marathons, an Ironman triathlon in Idaho in 2008 and the Israman triathlon in Israel in 2011, according to the release. In six male patients, doctors used a virus to repair a defective gene that causes choroideremia, a degenerative eye disease that can lead to complete blindness by middle age, according to a clinical trial report published online Jan. 16 in The Lancet. Vision improved for all the patients following the gene therapy, and particularly for two patients with advanced choroideremia, said lead author Robert MacLaren of the Nuffield Laboratory of Ophthalmology at the University of Oxford, and a consultant surgeon at the Oxford Eye Hospital, in England. "In truth, we did not expect to see such dramatic improvements in visual acuity and so we contacted both patients' home opticians to get current and historical data on their vision in former years, long before the gene therapy trial started," MacLaren said in a university news release. Scientists hope early intervention with the surgical treatment will halt progression of the devastating disorder, choroideremia, before patients are robbed of their sight. It is the first time gene therapy has successfully been applied to the light-sensitive photoreceptors of the retina, the digital camera at the back of the eye. Preliminary results from the first six patients taking part in a Phase One trial surprised and delighted the Oxford University team. Although the trial was only designed to test safety and dosages, two men with relatively advanced disease experienced dramatic improvements to their eyesight. The researchers are now planning a larger Phase II trial that will focus on the therapy's effectiveness. Professor Robert MacLaren, who led the gene therapy operations at Oxford Eye Hospital, said: "We're absolutely delighted with the results so far. Researchers at Oxford University have discovered that by replacing a missing protein in the retina they can prevent cells from degenerating. The therapy even improves the sight of those who have already begun to go blind in results that have "surpassed expectations". Two men who were already at an advanced stage of vision loss have experienced "dramatic improvements" in their sight which, so far, have lasted for two years. Two years ago, she completed her first marathon. Jonas was also diagnosed with retinitis pigmentosa, which led to blindness, when she was in her 30s, survived a breast cancer diagnosis in her 40s and was only eight minutes from the finish line at last years Boston Marathon when the bombs went off. Tonight, as the guest speaker for the 2014 Runners Soul Marathon Club registration night, Jonas will share elements of her inspirational journey. Her speech will begin at 7 p.m. in room PE 250 at the University of Lethbridge. Running is my absolute passion, so this is going to be a very fun speech for me, Jonas said Sunday after wrapping up a day of skiing at Castle Mountain Resort with the assistance of the Disabled Skiing Association.
