Fecal microbiota transplant is safe and effective for patients with ulcerative colitis – Science Daily

Posted: Published on May 1st, 2017

A single transplant of microbes contained in the stool of a healthy donor is a safe and effective way to increase diversity of good bacteria in the guts of patients with ulcerative colitis, according to new research from Weill Cornell Medicine and NewYork-Presbyterian. The findings suggest that fecal microbiota transplantation (FMT) might be an effective treatment for the disease, which causes inflammation and ulcers in the digestive tract. Fecal microbiota transplantation is a procedure in which fecal matter -- which is full of bacteria from the gut -- is collected from a healthy donor, strained and placed in the colon of a patient with inflammatory bowel disease. "The idea is that you can change someone's microbiome, the organisms that colonize the gut," said Dr. Randy Longman, an assistant professor of medicine at Weill Cornell Medicine and a gastroenterologist at NewYork-Presbyterian/Weill Cornell Medical Center. "We introduce good bacteria into the intestines of someone with the disease and hope that it encourages healing." FMT has been proven effective for patients with Clostridium difficile, a serious bacterial infection of the intestines, but questions remain about its effectiveness as a treatment for other diseases. In a study published April 26 in Inflammatory Bowel Disease, … Continue reading

CME Outfitters to offer livestream broadcast on ulcerative colitis from a live symposium taking place at a national medical meeting Bethesda, MD (PRWEB) April 29, 2017 CME Outfitters (CMEO) is set to host a live symposium on entitled Deep Remission, Top-Down Treatment Strategies and Real-World Data in Patients with UC: An Interactive and Innovative Case Series, at 5:30 7:00PM CT (6:30-8:00PM ET) on Sunday, May 7th, 2017 at a national medical meeting being held at the Sheraton Grand Chicago in Chicago, IL. Commonly known as UC, ulcerative colitis is an inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) characterized by exacerbations and remissions and, traditionally, goals of treatment have entailed resolution of clinical symptoms. Unfortunately, conventional therapies have not been overall effective and can carry adverse risk that often require discontinuation. In recent years, treatment goals have evolved to a treat-to-target strategy with target such as deep-remission (i.e, clinical, biochemical, and endoscopic remission) with the end goal of preventing long-term structural damage and disability. Pursuits of better targeted therapy to optimize IBD clinical outcomes have … Continue reading

Learning to live with ulcerative colitis – Huffington Post

Posted: Published on April 16th, 2017

When I first wrote about Living with Ulcerative Colitis (UC), I was very optimistic, as I typically am. I had just been released from the hospital, and was on a heavy dose of steroids to control my symptoms and inflammation. I was a rookie. I didnt know what was to come, but I was just so happy to get back to my normal life and be free. What I didnt know, was that three years later, I still wont have found freedom from my disease. Three years. Three years of pain, various medications, steroids, colonoscopies, blood labs, tests, trips to Mass General, desperate calls to my doctor. One of the worst parts about UC, IMO, is the uncertainty of it. No one knows the cause, how your body will react to certain medications, when or why a flare will occur, a cure. Not being able to understand why this is happening makes things more difficult for one reason: on top of all the physical symptoms, it makes me feel guilty. Am I doing something wrong? Should I be taking different vitamins? Spending my money on acupuncture? Should I stop eating gluten? Should I stop drinking alcohol? Should I stop having … Continue reading

Home Colon And Digestive Yoga increases quality of life in ulcerative colitis patients Its safe to say that most people try their best to reduce stress. Some choose a medicated route, perhaps choosing to drink alcohol or smoke cigarettes to take the edge off, while others choose healthier approaches to deal with stress, such as exercise. However, there are people who have a much harder time dealing with bouts of stress, as the cause for their stress is due to an internal bodily abnormality, as seen in patients with ulcerative colitis (UC). But a recent study has found that UC patients who participated in yoga found significant relieve from their stress-induced symptoms. Many people use yoga to increase their quality of life. In a comprehensive piece published on Nola.com Saturday, Mauti revealed he was diagnosed with ulcerative colitis prior to his senior year in 2012. His leadership alongside teammate Mike Zordich helped save the football program, but this news makes Mautis accomplishments all the more impressive. After being named special teams captain of his hometown New Orleans Saints in 2016, Mauti was forced to cut his season short due to increased complications with the disease. However, he and his doctors are confident a third successful surgery this April, which will remove his large intestine, should allow him to continue his NFL career. Mautis currently an unrestricted free agent, but the Saints, who paid his full salary last season as he recovered, have indicated they would like to re-sign him. Mauti said he routinely needed multiple IVs before kickoff to make it through games and would use the bathroom up to 25 times per day. Michael Mauti shares his grueling battle with ulcerative colitis – ESPN (blog)

Posted: Published on April 2nd, 2017

New Orleans Saints linebacker Michael Mauti went into intimate detail with The Times-Picayune about his grueling battle with ulcerative colitis -- an inflammatory bowel disease that he said had him going to the bathroom in "excruciating pain" 20 to 25 times per day before he had the first of three surgeries in November. "I've never been tested like this mentally," said Mauti. That's saying a lot, since Mauti endured three torn ACLs while in college at Penn State and was a veteran leader on the team during the Jerry Sandusky scandal. Mauti talked to NOLA.com about the physical toll of those frequent bathroom trips and the inability to keep food in, as well as the mental strain of not wanting to have an accident on the field. Mauti, 27, has dealt with the disease since his final year in college, but it finally reached a point where he and doctors felt it was necessary to have the surgeries. According to the story, Mauti will have an internal J-pouch that replaces his colon and rectum. Mauti is a free agent, but he hopes to recover in time to play this year and has remained in touch with the Saints, calling them … Continue reading
