Back to Browse Journals Patient Preference and Adherence Volume 11 Anna Testa,1 Fabiana Castiglione,1 Olga Maria Nardone,1 Giorgio L Colombo2 1Gastroenterology, University of Naples Federico II, Naples, 2Department of Drug Sciences, University of Pavia, Pavia, Italy Abstract: Medication adherence is an important challenge while treating chronic illnesses, such as ulcerative colitis (UC), that require a long-term management to induce and maintain clinical remission. This review provides an overview of the role that medication adherence plays in the routine management of UC, with a focus on the results of a recent Italian study reporting the perception of patients with UC regarding adherence to treatment. A literature analysis was conducted on topics, such as measurement of adherence in real practice, causes, risk factors and consequences of non-adherence and strategies, to raise patients adherence. Most of the data refer to adherence to 5-aminosalicylic acid, and standard of care for the induction and maintenance of remission in UC. The adherence rate to 5-aminosalicylic acid is low in clinical practice, thus resulting in fivefold higher risk of relapse, likely increased risk of colorectal cancer, reduced quality of life and higher health care costs for in- and outpatient settings. There are various causes affecting non-adherence to … Continue reading

Editors note: This information is provided for educational purposes only and is not meant to diagnose or treat any condition. If you have digestive health issues or pain, consult a licensed health care professional in person. Many people claim to have cured their ulcerative colitis with diet or supplements. Unfortunately, there is no diet or pill that can cure the disease. However, certain diet changes have shown promise in reducing symptoms and easing discomfort. This article explains what we currently know about the role of diet in ulcerative colitis. Ulcerative colitis is a chronic type of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), like Crohns disease, that affects the colon (large intestine). Recent studies estimate that IBD affects 2 million people worldwide (1). Ulcerative colitis causes inflammation and sores in the inner lining of the colon. Inflammation often begins in the rectum, but it can spread throughout the large intestine. This brief video gives a more detailed look at the disease: Summary: Ulcerative colitis is a type of inflammatory bowel disease that causes inflammation and sores in the colon. Ulcerative colitis is thought to develop when a person at genetic risk is exposed to certain environmental stressors. These environmental stressors either change the … Continue reading

Low level vitamin D during remission contributes to relapse in ulcerative colitis patients – Science Daily

Posted: Published on February 20th, 2017

A new study led by researchers at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center (BIDMC) has found that lower levels of vitamin D in the blood increase the risk of clinical relapse in patients with Ulcerative Colitis (UC), an inflammatory bowel disease that causes long-lasting inflammation and ulcers in the colon. The study was published in the February issue of the journal Clinical Gastroenterology and Hepatology. Lower vitamin D levels have been associated with active disease in patients with UC, but it has been unknown whether they increase disease relapses. "Prior studies in patients with Crohn's disease and Ulcerative Colitis had linked low vitamin D levels to disease flare-ups," said senior author Alan Moss, MD, a gastroenterologist at the Digestive Disease Center at BIDMC and Associate Professor of Medicine at Harvard Medical School. "However, it has been unclear if the flare-up was lowering vitamin D levels, or if low vitamin D levels were causing the flare-up. We thought that if we looked at vitamin D levels when the disease was inactive and then followed patients moving forward, the impact of baseline vitamin D levels on future events may be clearer." Moss and colleagues collected vitamin D serum levels through a physician-blinded prospective … Continue reading

The rotten egg gas, hydrogen sulfide, is one of the main malodorous compounds in human flatusin other words, one of the main reasons farts can smell so badbut the larger concern is that it may be responsible for relapses of inflammatory bowel diseases such as ulcerative colitis. In my video below,I talk about the role animal protein may play in the development of these diseases, thought to be because of putrefying animal protein gas. But what if you already have ulcerative colitis? Can cutting down on sulfur-containing amino acids help? Previously, the only dietary intervention shown to help at all was the withdrawal of milk. Case reports going back decades described patients with ulcerative colitis whose flares appeared to be triggered by cows milk. The elimination of all dairy products from the diet was reported to frequently result in a dramatic improvement in symptoms. But, when milk was reintroduced back into patients diets, it could trigger an attack. The role of milk wasnt formally studied though, until 1965. Was it just a small group of patients who were allergic? Or, could a milk-free diet help with this disease in general? Researchers randomized patients presenting with an attack of ulcerative colitis … Continue reading

Innovate is a privately held, clinical stage biotechnology company focused on developing novel autoimmune/inflammation medicines.Innovate is also developing therapeutics for unmet needs with global impact and for orphan indications. The company's lead drug candidate for celiac disease, larazotide acetate (INN-202), begins Phase 3 clinical trials in 2017. Larazotide, a novel oral peptide, has been studied in more than 800 patients with results that consistently reduced clinical symptoms of celiac disease. Larazotide's unique mechanism of action of reducing antigen trafficking across epithelial cells makes it a promising therapeutic for multiple diseases involving "leaky tight junctions." Innovate's second therapeutic, INN-108, enters Phase 2 trials in 2017. INN-108 is a small molecule for the treatment of an adult orphan indication and for mild to moderate ulcerative colitis. INN-108 is a prodrug that only becomes activated in the colon. An oral liquid formulation is also in development for pediatric and elderly patients. Licensing opportunities for these drugs are available outside the U.S. Forward Looking Statements This press release contains forward-looking statements, including statements regarding the clinical development of our product candidates, which are subject to risks and uncertainties that could cause actual results to differ materially. John Ryan on his ulcerative colitis: ‘It is no way to live’ | Irish Examiner – Irish Examiner

Posted: Published on February 9th, 2017

He may not have got the chance to do what he loves most and scrummaged against the Scots last week but just being on the pitch at Murrayfield making his Six Nations debut was a dream come true for John Ryan given the journey he has taken of late. Eleven minutes off the bench for Tadhg Furlong, the Munster tighthead prop got the chance to build on a Test debut against Canada last November and although neither he nor replacement loosehead Cian Healy got to pack down against an under-pressure Scottish scrum, the frustration was alleviated by the knowledge he had taken another huge step in his development from provincial squad man to international. That Ryan, 28, from Berrings, Cork, has progressed at the rate he has in the past 18 months being cited by Alan Quinlan recently as the most improved player in Ireland this season - has been even more impressive given for the last few years he has been forced to cope with an inflammatory intestinal condition known as ulcerative colitis that caused him to rapidly lose 10 kilograms in 2014 to drop from 118kgs (19 stone) to 108kg. Initially having to adopt a gluten-free diet, Ryan … Continue reading

Homeopathic remedies and homeopathy treatment for Ulcerative Colitis. Ulcerative colitis is an inflammatory disorder of the colonic mucosa characterized by relapses and remissions. The rectal mucosa is always involved, occasionally by microscopic inflammation alone, and the disease extends proximally. Autoimmune factor Even though exact mechanism of ulcerative colitis is not clear, there are some factors which may point out at autoimmune reaction. Dysfunctional immunoregulation In the intestinal wall results in inappropriate production of cytokines. This creates an imbalance between various interleukins resulting in inflammatory changes. Psychosomatic and personality factor Ulcerative colitis is more common in western women. Emotional stress, family stress, stress from divorce are the contributing factors. Dietary factors Westernization of the diet which is rich in red meat has been blamed. Vegetarian diet is supposed to protect the colons mucosa. Allergy to milk protein is responsible for ulcerative colitis in few patients. Defective mucin production Defective mucin production and a defective mucosal immunological reaction is considered as a chief factor responsible for ulcerative colitis. Onset is usually gradual. Bloody diarrhoea is the hallmark of the disease, though proctitis may present with rectal bleeding and constipation. Urgency and crampy abdominal discomfort before defecation. Ulcerative colitis is a chronic inflammatory bowel disease that affects the lining of the colon (large intestine) and rectum, causing inflammation and ulcers within the lining of the bowel. Ulcerative colitis affects both males and females equally. Most people are diagnosed in their 20s and 30s but up to 5 percent of cases are diagnosed in children prior to age 10, and 20 percent are diagnosed with ulcerative colitis prior to age 20. Ulcerative colitis is associated with an increased risk of colon cancer. The cause of ulcerative colitis is unknown but it is believed to be a combination of genetics, an altered immune response, and the environment. The most common symptom of ulcerative colitis is bloody diarrhea. Other symptoms include: The symptoms of ulcerative colitis often come and go, leading to periods of remission in between flares of the disease.
