NEWTON -- Familiarity, chemistry, cohesion. It's all part of it, as much a part of success on the basketball court as the screens and the rainbow jumpers and the pick-and-rolls.

So with chemistry and cohesion abounding, the Sussex County Community College men's basketball team could be on its way to a memorable winter.

Though off to a slower start than the Skylanders would like (1-4 headinginto Thanksgiving weekend), the signs are there that SCCC will improve on last years four-win season and perhaps even make a run at the Region XIX playoffs.

They've had a big win (87-82) over Camden College on November 15, and a slim loss (75-73) against Passaic County Community College on November 20, among their games so far.

Most importantly, the team is together. They've got that c-word.

The chemistry's great, said Randy Jackson, now in his fifth season as SCCC men's head basketball coach. We have guys who understand where guys are going to be on the court and where guys like the ball.

But it's more than that.

You can definitely see it from the bench, Jackson said. When guys are out of the game, they're not worrying about their minutes, they're cheering the team on. We have a bunch of guys whose only concern is winning. No one's worried about where their points are coming from. Guys just want to win and they are willing to sacrifice to help take us there.
