A Cork woman who was told she would never be able to have children has given birth to a baby boy this week in a miraculous turn of events.

Nuala OBrien believed she could never have children after suffering from cancer, which sent her into early menopause at age 25 due to ovarian failure.

When the Glanworth, county Cork woman found that her stomach had swelled up, she was sure it was a tumour, until doctors told her she was eight months pregnant.

I was told Id never have children and I had to go on hormone replacement therapy, so I just kept getting check-ups for cancer, Nuala told Patricia Messinger on C103s Cork Today Show.

My stomach was slightly swollen, nothing major, and I just presumed I had a tumour or something in my stomach, and thats when I found out I was eight months pregnant.

Nualas baby boy Shay is happy and healthy and was born at 8.5lbs on Sunday, 28 June at the Royal Hospital for Women in Sydney Australia.

Hes just so happy and content, no wonder we didnt notice him for eight months, hes so quiet, Nuala joked.

She recalled how swiftly the pregnancy went, despite only realising it during her third trimester.

I was told when I found out that I was pregnant that I was 34 weeks and that I was due last Wednesday. But I had an appointment the week before and they said that they thought I was actually already 40 weeks in, that they got the dates wrong, because its hard to tell when you only find out in your third trimester.

It was seven hours all together but the end of it was very quick like we were watching Netflix just kind of waiting in the room, when the midwife came in and said right youre going to have to start pushing now and he was born within the next 40 minutes.

Nuala and her partner Dale have been living in Australia, but now they plan to settle back in Ireland with their new baby boy Shay Bua who she named after her oncologist in Ireland Seamus OReilly.
