The undergraduate curriculum in biology is constructed to complement a liberal arts education. Majoring in biology can enhance any future career, as it emphasizes inquiry, problem solving, collaborative learning, and independent learning.

The mission of the Department of Biology is to provide an outstanding and supportive educational environment in which students and faculty flourish as they seek to better understand the biological sciences and their practical applications.

The Department of Biology is committed to excellence in teaching, advising, undergraduate research, and service. We will provide challenging and innovative curricula that promote experiential learning opportunities such as internships, student-faculty collaborative research, and access to advanced technology. Our programs will prepare students for life-long learning and for a diverse array of advanced studies and careers in the life sciences, including the health professions and teaching, making them competitive for positions in top graduate and professional schools, secondary schools, and industry. We will contribute to the holistic education of all Marist students by fostering scientific literacy and critical thinking skills that enhance their scientifically-informed decisions. Faculty are committed to continual development as teacher-scholars, and being active in research involving Marist students, with the goal of disseminating their findings to the scientific community. We will enhance student learning by improving and expanding our facilities and instrumentation. We will strengthen our integration with other School of Science programs, establish pedagogical and scholarly collaborations with colleagues within and outside of the College, and engage in service to the College and the greater community.

The Objectives of the Biology Program are:

There are three curricular choices for students interested in biology. The Biology major offers a general curriculum for those who may be unsure of their future career path. The Biology Education major prepares students to be high school life science teachers. The Biomedical Sciences major is designed for students interested in medical and other health professional schools.

This curriculum is designed to prepare students to pursue many career paths in the biological sciences. Students may select a path which prepares them for the various health professions. The curriculum also provides a foundation for graduate studies and offers the student the opportunity to gain research experience within selected advanced courses as well as through independent faculty-student research at Marist. All biology students are encouraged to apply to summer research programs at a variety of locations including Marist, the Institute of Ecosystem Studies and other colleges and universities.

Biology Education students interested in teaching careers can earn provisional New York State certification in secondary education in biology.

Students who wish to focus their undergraduate preparation for medical, dental, veterinary, or other health professional schools should choose this major (although the Biology major also is an appropriate choice). Students will complete a health-related internship and are strongly encouraged to include business and management courses to complement scientific training.
