Now, weve known folks have been struggling with ashy hands over the past month, but dermatologists have been reporting a rise in a much more serious condition. Hand eczema is more than dry skin; its raw, flaky, itchy, and often cracked.

This is hand eczema on a level that we have never seen before, says Charles E. Crutchfield III, M.D., a board-certified dermatologist and medical director of Crutchfield Dermatology in Eagan, MN.The excessive detergents and alcohol strip the skin of its natural protective and moisturizing oil.

It also leaves skin vulnerable to infections from not just coronavirus, but everyday germs, as well.

Dr. Crutchfield says this is the best time to pamper our hands.

The first step in treatment, of course, is prevention. Opt for conditioning cleanses like Dove or Cerave cleansing bars and make sure to keep hand lotions on deck.

But, if youre not seeing improvement after a week or so, youre going to have to hit up your dermatologist. They can provide you with a prescription for anti-inflammatory cream or ointment to rehydrate and heal irritated hands.
