VICTORIA, Texas According to the Center of Disease Control, in the United States, more than 600,000 thousand Americans die from heart disease each year. One and every five heart attacks are silent and the person didnt know.

Harisha Chandna, an Intervention Cardiologist at DeTar Hosptial, said There are so many patients especially females they wont get chest pains. They just dont feel good, short of breath, some people have heartburn and they think they ate something spicy last night and thats whats causing it, but actually theyre having a heart attack.

The American Heart Association states that sleep apnea could lead to heart problems and it could potentially be life threatening. Sleep apnea is a disease that causes an individual to stop breathing in their sleep and could cause a heart attack.

Anybody can have a heart attack. Now you dont get treated by everybody. You go to your primary care physician, your best bet is to go to your primary care physician, said Chandna.

Heart Disease occurs in people of all ages. Like baby Emery Guerro who was diagnosed with congestive heart failure at the age of six months. Recently Guerro was in a San Antonio hospital waiting to have open-heart surgery.

Courtney Whitehead, the mother of Emery Guerro, said, Unfortunately, right now theyre not able to do surgery because shes still not well enough to undergo the bypass, cause they fear she might not be able to come out of it.

Brittany Sandbach, the American Heart Walk Director said, Heart defects are also the number one defects in babies and so thats something to definitely be aware of. All babies that are born are screened for various diseases and heart disease and heart defects, in general, are one of them.

Procedures to help babies heart conditions are recommended by doctors in adults, there are several things that can be done to lower the risk of heart attacks.

Stop smoking if you are a smoker. If you are diabetic take care of that, high blood pressure treat it and keep it under control. If you have high cholesterol that needs to be taken care of even if you have a strong family history, you can protect by taking care of other risk factors, said Chandna.

Other ways to prevent and lower the risk of heart disease are to participate in daily exercise, add more vegetables to each meal, and drink plenty of water.

Exercise is important, not only after having a heart attack even before, if you maintain a healthy weight, a good diet, and exercise, that would be the one thing which will prevent you from having a heart attack, said Chandna.
