These studies at Arizona Pain Specialists involve stem cell injections for back pain, arthritis medication effectiveness and side effects, an innovative peripheral nerve stimulation study and a comparison of the Global Pain Scale versus other pain measuring tools. The groundbreaking stem cell injection study for chronic low back pain is an FDA clinical trial. The study is being sponsored by an Australian company, Mesoblast, and involves injecting the stem cell material into degenerative discs that have failed conservative treatment for over six months.

With degenerative disc disease having no current regenerative options, stem cell injections have ground breaking potential to restore biologic tissue and reduce pain. Most pain procedures act as a proverbial band aid, offering symptomatic relief for a few months at a time. Stem cells have the potential for regenerating while providing pain relief.

The second study being conducted at Arizona Pain Specialists is evaluating several widely used anti-inflammatory arthritis medications, including Celebrex, Aleve and Advil. The effectiveness and side effects of the medications are being evaluated, especially in regards to heart and gastrointestinal effects. The study is being funded by Pfizer, and involves participants taking the medications for four years with monitoring at periodic clinic visits.

The peripheral nerve stimulator study involves an innovative device that is placed under the skin in either the legs, arms or trunk. The device includes a tiny lead placed in the affected area, providing electrical stimulation to disrupt the pain signals going to the brain.

A typical nerve stimulator is placed around the spinal cord, and modulates pain signals going to the brain from that area. This study involves modulating pain signals closer to the source of the pain emanating from one nerve.

The research is evaluating the devices effectiveness for neuralgia pain from a specific nerve, and is being sponsored by the manufacturer of the Bioness StimRouter device. The study involves 13 months of having the device implanted with multiple follow up visits.

Another study being conducted at Arizona Pain Specialists is an evaluation of the Global Pain Scale (GPS). The GPS is the gold standard for evaluating a patients pain, while this study will evaluate additional pain measures. The objective is to find the most accurate method for assessing patients pain with available screening tools.

To see if a person is a candidate for any of the studies being conducted, call the leading Arizona pain center at (602) 507-6550.
