The groundbreaking stem cell injection study for chronic low back pain is an FDA clinical trial. The study is being sponsored by an Australian company, Mesoblast, and involves injecting the stem cell material into degenerative discs that have failed conservative treatment for over six months.

With degenerative disc disease having no current regenerative options, stem cell injections have ground breaking potential to restore biologic tissue and reduce pain. A typical nerve stimulator is placed around the spinal cord, and modulates pain signals going to the brain from that area. This study involves modulating pain signals closer to the source of the pain emanating from one nerve.

The research is evaluating the devices effectiveness for neuralgia pain from a specific nerve, and is being sponsored by the manufacturer of the Bioness StimRouter device. The study involves 13 months of having the device implanted with multiple follow up visits.

Another study being conducted at Arizona Pain Specialists is an evaluation of the Global Pain Scale (GPS). The GPS is the gold standard for evaluating a patients pain, while this study will evaluate additional pain measures. The objective is to find the most accurate method for assessing patients pain with available screening tools.
