Each year, the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery publishes a multi-specialty statistical report, detailing everything from Botox to liposuction. St. Louis West County Plastic Surgeons team watches for the results to get a better understanding of industry trends that play out at the practice and around the country. The doctors use this information as part of their ongoing effort to offer techniques and services of the sort that recently led to their getting voted Best Cosmetic Surgery Center in St. Louis by Ladue News.

This year the 18th year the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery compiled and released its information the figures were published on March 11, revealing that the numbers of surgical and non-surgical procedures performed in the United States stayed consistent from 2013 to 2014. Despite the overall constancy, however, there have been some shifts in who is getting specific cosmetic surgeries. The number of men choosing liposuction and other procedures has been growing, making what the society calls dramatic increases in male aesthetic cosmetic procedures over the last five years.

The president of the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery, Michael Edwards, said in his announcement that it is abundantly clear that men are flocking to plastic surgeons. Their number increased 43 percent from 2013 to 2014.

The most popular surgical procedure for both men and women in 2014 was liposuction, clocking in at 342,494 total surgeries performed. Other procedures on the overall most popular cosmetic surgery list include breast augmentation, eyelid surgery, tummy tuck, and nose surgery.

Men are obviously not choosing breast augmentation, though many seek the opposite: breast reduction to treat gynecomastia, which is the development of male breasts. In St. Louis, this cosmetic surgery can involve liposuction, skin removal, or some combination of the two, depending on the severity of the problem. The American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery statistics show that male breast reduction procedures have risen 33 percent in the last five years.

In that same time period, male blepharoplasty, or eyelid surgery, has risen 34 percent, while facelifts have increased in popularity among men by 44 percent.

The society first started its industry data collection in 1997. Since then, procedures performed on men have gone up 273 percent. Dr. James Grotting, president-elect of the society, said they expect the upward trend to continue as men seek cosmetic surgery as a way of maintaining an edge in an increasingly competitive job market.

West County Plastic Surgeons will continue to watch the trends when it comes to cosmetic surgery for men and women alike. To learn more about cosmetic surgery available in St. Louis, including liposuction, call (314) 996-8800 or visit westcountyplasticsurgeons.wustl.edu.
