Chemistry 1307 students were given an exam 50 minutes late 7 p.m. Wednesday when the testing location was changed from the Human Sciences building to the Biology building and then to the Chemistry building.

The original room in the Human Sciences building that was scheduled as the testing location had a maximum capacity of 200 students, while about 300 students were supposed to take the exam.

The size of the rooms was an issue not all instructors were made aware of prior to the exam, Joachim Weber, associate professor and interim chair of the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry, said.

The instructors were informed of the primary examination room assignment for their section, but they were not made aware that some of these rooms were smaller than the actual class size and that additional rooms had been assigned for students in the section, he said.

While most of the sections were able to resolve the matter quickly, he said one section was moved to two other locations before the test was administered because of missing key cards for the original extra rooms.

This inconveniences me, Nick Schlachter, a sophomore wildlife biology major from Dallas, said. Im trying to get out of here by eight because its Wednesday and now theyre holding me back.

Students walked from building to building in the rain and through puddles. Many students did not have adequate rainwear.

Ethan Baker, a sophomore mechanical engineering major from Austin, said he did not know why a situation like this would happen on campus.

We have plenty of rooms on campus that are big enough, he said. I took this class last year and we always had seats left over, but now were here and weve got a bunch of kids standing up and were all delayed for however long it takes for them to find a room.

Not all students were bothered by the change, however.
