NeuroRecovery Training Institute (NeuroRTI) is pleased to announce they are set to have two faculty members speak about the Pediatric Neuromuscular Recovery Scale at the upcoming International Spinal Cord Society (ISCoS) and American Spinal Injury Association (ASIA) Joint Scientific Meeting, which will be held May 14-16, 2015 in Montreal, Canada.

Dr. Andrea Behrman, PT, PhD, FAPTA, and Shelley Trimble, PT, will present Pediatric Neuromuscular Recovery Scale: Content Development, Reliability, and Application with collaborator, Dr. Mary Jane (MJ) Mulcahey, on May 14 from 11:40 AM 1:10 PM. The current gaps in pediatric assessments will be identified and the rationale for measuring neuromuscular capacity in children ages 1-12 years will be addressed. Attendees in this workshop furthermore will learn about the Pediatric Neuromuscular Recovery Scale items, scoring, content validity and inter-rater reliability of the Pediatric Neuromuscular Recovery Scale (Peds NRS). There will be opportunities to score items on the Peds NRS across the age spectrum from ages 1-12 years via video cases.

The Peds NRS is an extension of the Adult NRS, adapted to address the needs for a population age 1-12 with varying motor skills across this age span. Similar to the adult NRS, the pediatric version uniquely assesses neuromuscular capacity comparing performance to pre-injury or typical manner of movement prior to injury without behavioral compensation thus how the movement is performed matters. While some children are injured prior to development (e.g. under age 1), the NRS assesses their capacity regardless of age when injured.

The Peds NRS is currently being tested for inter-rater reliability and NeuroRTI is providing the platform for the on-line introductory content and videos for the study raters. Data collection for this study, funded by the Craig H. Neilsen Foundation, will be completed in May 2015. After analysis, review, and publication of our findings, the course will appropriately be made available for the pediatric rehabilitation community. NeuroRTI, thus, will continue to host and provide it as an on-line course which provides multiple pediatric videos for practice in using the Peds NRS.

We are glad to have the opportunity to share this work and its development with the pediatric rehab community attending this years ISCos and ASIA Joint Scientific Meeting, said Behrman. This is a novel scale and an important addition to the toolbox of pediatric outcomes.

For a complete list of available neuromuscular recovery scale or pediatric courses, please visit the NeuroRTI website or call 888-742-9588. Those who are interested in registering to attend the ISCoS and ASIA Joint Scientific Meeting in Montreal may do so online through the start of the conference.

About The NeuroRecovery Training Institute: The NeuroRecovery Training Institute (NeuroRTI) is on a mission to create and promote a culture of evidence-based practice (EBP) within the neurologic physical therapy profession. Through transformational education efforts, NeuroRTI has created a full continuum of neurologic training programs beginning with a large nationally-scaled physical therapy Neuro Residency, Postprofessional DPT and online Continuing Education (CE) course work that will include various topics in the treatment of spinal cord dysfunction, acquired brain injury, and other neurologic disorders. A course on the Adult Neuromuscular Recovery Scale, a cutting edge outcomes tool was released end of last year. ###
