Noted American plastic surgeon Dr. Charles K. Herman will join faculty members from Mexico, United States, Peru, Brazil, Spain, and Italy, as a lecturer on the topic of modern techniques in body contouring at the 41st Annual International Symposium on Aesthetic Plastic Surgery in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico, November 10 to 15, 2014. Dr. Herman will discuss the importance of vectors in modern facelift surgery and an algorithmic approach to arm lift surgery. The meeting will also include presentations on abdominoplasty (tummy tuck), liposuction, breast augmentation, fat grafting, and buttock lift from surgeons all over the world who are considered leaders in their field. The meeting will feature addresses from the Presidents of the major Mexican plastic surgery societies and the Commissioner of the Jalisco Medical Arbitration Commission. The Chair of the meeting is Dr. Jose Guerrerosantos, Professor of Surgery at University of Guadalajara and President of the Jalisco Institute of Reconstructive Surgery.

Dr. Herman states that facelift techniques in the past 10 years have shifted their focus from removing excess tissue to restoring volume and shape to the face. He will discuss how specific vectors are used during surgery to lift tissues that droop over time. It is this descent of skin and soft tissues that cause the telltale signs of the aging face. In addition, he will present an algorithm for arm lifting surgery that logically analyzes the indications for this surgery based on patients' anatomy so that the optimal surgical technique can be chosen. Dr. Herman recorded three of his surgeries at Pocono Medical Center. The live recordings will be shown during his presentations to the audience of surgeons in Mexico. The increasingly popularity and improved safety of weight loss surgery such as gastric bypass, gastric sleeve and gastric banding has resulted in a greater demand for body contouring, including facelifting and arm lifting.

Dr. Charles Herman is the editor of three textbooks in plastic surgery, including Encyclopedia of Body Sculpting After Massive Loss (Thieme Publishers, 2011), which is dedicated to the vast array of surgical options available for body contouring in patients who have lost significant amounts of weight. The textbook has been translated into Spanish and it is now distributed throughout Latin America, South America, and Spain. Dr. Herman says he has patients consult with him whom have lost over 200 lbs. as a result of weight loss surgery. He says that these patients present unique challenges that were not commonly seen by plastic surgeons prior to the advent of weight loss operations. Dr. Herman is on the faculty of The Commonwealth Medical College in Scranton, PA, and Albert Einstein College of Medicine in New York City, Chief Medical Executive at Pocono Health Systems, and has offices in East Stroudsburg, PA, and on Fifth Avenue in New York City.
