The New Orleans City Council last month approved $100,000 in next year's budget for a special Orleans Parish Civil District Court program aimed at helping people with mental illness receive outpatient treatment. The program, which seeks to use the black robe effect the presumed authority of judges to ensure that patients follow treatment plans, started accepting patients in December 2018. But Judge Kern Reese said hes run into one major problem since the assisted outpatient treatment program he oversees went live: Despite dozens of referrals, not enough people have qualified to enter the program. Fatal Portland police shooting highlights failures of mental health system, chief says – OregonLive

Prior to being shot and killed by Portland officers on Sunday, Koben Henriksen had several recent encounters with local police, all of which ended without police force and with Henriksen in a medical facility. On Thursday, four days after Henriksens death, Portland police released information describing prior encounters with the Portland man, noting that his death highlights failures in Portlands mental health system. On Sunday, Henriksen, 51, was shot by police near Mall 205 after callers reported him walking in traffic and waving knives at passing cars. Continue reading

The company requesting a $1.4 million performance-based incentive grant from the Metro Council to open a new specialty psychiatric hospital in north Baton Rouge is planning to locate the facility in the former Champion Medical Center space at Howell Place. According to a draft agreement attached to the Metro Council agenda for Wednesdays meeting, at which the council will vote on the $1.4 million incentive, Oceans Behavioral Hospital plans to enter into a 10-year lease for some 35,000 square feet in the former surgical specialty hospital at Howell Place.
