Risk Prediction Tools Improve Shared Decision-Making in Diabetes With CAD – The Cardiology Advisor

Posted: Published on October 24th, 2019

Personalized risk prediction tools may be used to improve shared medical decision-making and increase the use of coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG) over percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) in patients with diabetes and multivessel coronary artery disease (CAD), according to study results published in the Journal of the American College of Cardiology. Results from the FREEDOM trial (Future Revascularization Evaluation in Patients with Diabetes Mellitus: Optimal Management of Multivessel Disease; ClinicalTrials.gov identifier: NCT00086450) have shown CABG to be superior to PCI for major acute cardiovascular events (MACE) and angina reduction in patients with diabetes and CAD. Hypertension in adults: summary of updated NICE guidance – The BMJ

Posted: Published on October 23rd, 2019

Discuss treatment with people with stage 1 hypertension and a 10 year risk for cardiovascular disease 10% Choice of antihypertensive drug treatment should take into account patient preferences; a new decision aid has been produced to support this Consistently maintain blood pressure below target, rather than aim for a target Existing blood pressure targets have not been lowered; the benefits and harms of lowering them could not be fully determined from current evidence Asymptomatic, severe hypertension (180/120 mmHg) does not require same day specialist review, but investigations for target organ damage should be carried out as soon as possible The guideline now makes recommendations for people with type 2 diabetes Hypertension is a leading global cause of morbidity and mortality. More than 25% of the adult UK population has hypertension, and in about 30% blood pressure remains uncontrolled.1 In August, the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) published its updated guideline on the diagnosis and management of hypertension. Chronic Stress in African-Americans Linked to Hypertension – TCTMD

Posted: Published on October 23rd, 2019

(UPDATED) Everybody experiences stress at some point, but when it persists over time, stress may increase the risk of developing hypertension, findings from a community-based cohort of African-Americans suggest. In the Jackson Heart Study, participants who reported either moderate or high exposure to stress on annual assessments were more likely to develop hypertension by the next study visit, even after accounting for baseline stress levels and potential confounders like diet, smoking, and physical activity, according to researchers led by Tanya Spruill, PhD (New York University School of Medicine, New York, NY). None of those things actually explained away that relationship, so it really increased our confidence that theres a true association: that stress really is increasing the risk of developing hypertension, Spruill told TCTMD Continue reading
