Mental Health Concerns During College Mental health is a major concern for people of all ages, including adolescents and young adults. During these years, our bodies and life circumstances change rapidly as we grow up, establish our identities, form new relationships, and strike out on our own in school and with jobs for the first time. Lots of decisions need to be made. All this change can be exciting and present wonderful opportunities for fulfillment, but can also lead to significant pressure and stress. Sometimes the stresses are manageable with the support of friends and family, relaxation techniques, and/or making life style changes, such as getting more sleep or exercise or making other simple changes. On the other hand, sometimes the pressures can lead to significant clinical depression and/or anxiety disorders or serious eating disorders. Also, adolescence and young adulthood are times when genetic predispositions to inherited mental health illnesses, including depression, anxiety disorders, bipolar disorder, personality disorders, and schizophrenia, often first manifest themselves. Physicians and nurse practitioners at Health & Wellness are experienced at diagnosing common mental health problems, particularly depression, anxiety, and eating disorders. We can prescribe antidepressants and/or anti-anxiety medication, when appropriate. This is often done in … Continue reading

Heart Attack (Myocardial Infarction) | Symptoms and Causes

Posted: Published on November 22nd, 2018

Treatment with a clot-busting medicine or an emergency procedure to restore the blood flow through the blocked blood vessel is usually done as soon as possible. This is to prevent or minimise any damage to your heart muscle. Other treatments help to ease the pain and to prevent complications. Reducing various risk factors can help to prevent a heart attack. The heart is mainly made of special muscle (myocardium). The heart pumps blood into blood vessels (arteries) which take the blood to every part of the body. Like any other muscle, the heart muscle needs a good blood supply. The coronary arteries take blood to the heart muscle. The main coronary arteries branch off from the aorta. The aorta is the large artery which takes oxygen-rich blood from the heart chambers to the body. The main coronary arteries divide into smaller branches which take blood to all parts of the heart muscle. See separate leaflet called The Heart and Blood Vessels. If you have a heart attack, a coronary artery or one of its smaller branches is suddenly blocked. The part of the heart muscle supplied by this artery loses its blood (and oxygen) supply if the vessel is blocked. … Continue reading

Interventional Cardiology | WVU Heart and Vascular Institute

Interventional cardiologists use non-surgical techniques usually by running a catheter through the arteries into and around the heart to repair the blockages that cut off the flow of blood in and out of the heart. Our cardiologists perform angioplasties, in which a balloon attached to the catheter clears the arteries, and are also experienced in the use of stents. In addition to traditional stents, WVU uses drug-eluting stents, which deliver medication directly to the site of the blockage. At the WVU Heartand Vascular Institute, we perform between 1,500 to 1,800 angioplasties and stent placements annually. For a heart attack patient, door to balloon is the time from arrival at the hospital until the start of balloon angioplasty. The national goal for door to balloon is 90 minutes. The WVU Heartand Vascular Institute far exceeds that goal. We have the doctors, technology, and facilities, including our cardiac labs, to make a rapid diagnosis and take quick, effective action 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year. Weve refined our coordination and teamwork to a science. Treatments/procedures performed at the WVU Heart and Vascular Institute include: Radial Artery Access Cardiac CatheterizationWVU Heart and Vascular Institute interventional cardiologists offer … Continue reading

Cerebral Palsy (CP) is a developmental disability that affects movement. It can result from damage or dysfunction in the developing brain, and may present before or at birth. It is estimated the approximately one child in 500 born in Australia will be diagnosed with CP. The effects of CP are different for each individual. The effects can include problems with movement, muscle control, muscle coordination, muscle tone, reflexes, balance and posture. Types of Cerebral Palsy Spastic Cerebral Palsy Spastic Cerebral Palsy is the most common type of CP, accounting for 70% 80% of cases. Spasticity is a form of hypertonia caused by damage to the motor cortex of the brain. Children may have difficulty moving from one position to another and controlling individual muscles to perform a movement task. Dyskinetic Cerebral Palsy Children with Dyskinetic CP have variable involuntary movements which are often noticeable when a childattempts to perform a task. Dyskinetic CP results from damage to the basal ganglia. The basal ganglia are responsible for regulating voluntary movements. Dyskinetic movements can be: Ataxic Cerebral Palsy Children with Ataxia have movement that can appear clumsy, unstable or imprecise. Their movements are not smooth and can appear jerky. How could stem cells be helpful in cerebral palsy? As we discussed, CP is caused by damage to the brains motor control center. This area of the brain consists of billions of different brain cells. Theories suggest that by infusing stem cells into the damaged area of the brain, they may be able to take the place of the damaged cells. Alternatively, scientists are hopeful that they may be able to recreate brain cells with the stem cells in a lab. Even if stem cell therapy may not necessarily offer a cure, it may still be used to protect and repair the damaged cells before there is permanent damage. This procedure will, in turn, reduce symptoms and promote mobility. There is still a lot of debate around the topic of stem cell therapy in many medical conditions including CP. We will just have to wait and see what happens. For now, the only way to treat cerebral palsy is by managing mobility complications and its other symptoms as well as we can. Below are some frequently asked questions aboutstem cell therapy for Parkinsons Disease. The majority of complications in Parkinsons patients are related to the failure of dopamine neurons to do their job properly. Dopamine sends signals to the part of your brain that controls movement. It lets your muscles move smoothly and do what you want them to do. Once the nerve cells break down you no longer have enough dopamine, … Continue reading

Traumatic Brain Injury Rehab & Treatment …

Posted: Published on November 21st, 2018

Traumatic brain injury causes a number of minor to serious complications that typically require both immediate and ongoing, long-term treatment. While the first stages of treatment for TBI involve sustaining life and preventing further injury, chronic care requires a combination of rehabilitation programs and assistive technologies. Most rehabilitation for traumatic brain injury is aimed at overcoming, minimizing or working through disabilities so patients can live as independently as possible. Immediately after the incident that has caused traumatic brain injury (which can include physical abuse or a serious fall), patients are generally rushed to the hospital for immediate, acute treatment of TBI. During acute treatment, medical professionals will: At these specialized care facilities, medical staff will fully evaluate the patients impairments, disabilities and probability of recovery. Additionally, doctors will outline a course of appropriate treatments, helping patients and their families build the right team of medical professionals necessary for rehabilitation and chronic TBI treatment. Although most traumatic brain injury patients enter subacute treatment centers in shock or a state of post-traumatic amnesia, they leave these facilities ready to live independently, live with home care or move onto to long-term care centers. Patients with mild to moderate TBI spend little, if no … Continue reading
