Cardiac Repair and Regeneration Research Unit | Heart and …

DEB Laboratory Research Aims: We broadly investigate mechanisms of cardiac repair and regeneration and in particular study the interface of scar forming cells and cardiac progenitors in regulating a cardiac injury response. We use a variety of genetic, molecular and physiologic approaches to study how the outcome of a repair response can be manipulated to minimize scarring and enhance cardiac function. Main projects in the lab are summarized below: The heart is unable to regenerate heart muscle after a heart attack and lost cardiac muscle is replaced by scar tissue. Scar tissue does not contribute to cardiac contractile force and the remaining viable cardiac muscle is thus subject to a greater hemodynamic burden. Over time, the heart muscle eventually fails leading to the development of heart failure and 500,000 patients are diagnosed annually in the United States with heart failure. Thus the inability of the heart to regenerate cardiac muscle, coupled with a predominant fibrotic injury response remain major fundamental obstacles to treating heart disease. Our laboratory studies the interface of cardiac fibroblasts (scar forming cells) and cardiac progenitors in determining how a cross talk between these cells regulates cardiac repair. We use murine models of cardiac injury and use … Continue reading

Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy – Montefiore Medical Center

Posted: Published on July 24th, 2018

The Hyperbaric Medicine Program at Montefiore, which emphasizes a focus on wound care, is a leading referral resource for hyperbaric medicine in New York. We heal chronic wounds and can often salvage limbs from risk of amputation, especially for patients who have compromised immune systems or diabetic foot ulcers. Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy (HBOT) is a complementary treatment to overall wound therapy. During HBOT, a patient lies comfortably in an acrylic oxygen chamber and breathes 100 percent pure oxygen. This process helps fight infections, eliminates harmful toxins and promotes the growth of new blood vessels. These conditions are responsive to HBOT: Each patient at the Hyperbaric Medicine Program has a customized care plan developed by a multidisciplinary team of physicians, including: vascular surgeons, plastic surgeons, podiatrists, orthopedic surgeons, rehabilitative medicine experts, infectious disease specialists, nurses and technicians. We respond to the needs of the individual's wound before, during and after treatment. Each patient care plan includes a comprehensive approach to therapy and overall wound care as well as patient education. We assess the patient's baseline condition and determine if oxygen is critical to the healing of each wound. Our physicians also determine if the medical team can deliver enough oxygen to … Continue reading

"Ventricular Remodeling" is a descriptor in the National Library of Medicine's controlled vocabulary thesaurus, MeSH (Medical Subject Headings). Descriptors are arranged in a hierarchical structure, which enables searching at various levels of specificity. The geometric and structural changes that the HEART VENTRICLES undergo, usually following MYOCARDIAL INFARCTION. It comprises expansion of the infarct and dilatation of the healthy ventricle segments. While most prevalent in the left ventricle, it can also occur in the right ventricle. Acute Management of Pulmonary Embolism – American College …

Posted: Published on July 17th, 2018

Introduction Venous thromboembolic disease (VTE) is estimated to occur in at least 1 to 2 persons per 1000 population annually, manifesting as deep vein thrombosis (DVT), pulmonary embolism (PE) or in combination.1-3 It is the cause of over 100,000 deaths annually and is the most preventable cause of death in hospitalized patients in the United States.4 Despite treatment with anticoagulant therapy, a significant proportion of survivors of acute DVT or PE are at risk of suffering from the disabling sequelae such as the post thrombotic syndrome (PTS), recurrent VTE or chronic thromboembolic pulmonary hypertension (CTEPH).1,5 Given the limitations of medical therapy, promising endovascular treatment modalities have evolved over the past two decades in an effort to mitigate the acute and chronic disability from VTE.6,7 The purpose of this review is to discuss the rationale and evidence for an endovascular treatment approach for high-risk acute DVT and PE patients. The Rationale for an Interventional Approach to Massive and Submassive PE The most dreaded acute complication of PE is death; it is estimated that over 100,000 deaths in hospitalized patients in the United States are attributable to acute PE each year.4 The severity of PE is stratified into massive (PE causing hemodynamic … Continue reading

Molecular Cardiology Centenary Institute

Molecular Cardiology is the study of genetic heart disorders. Our major goal is to reduce human disease through the integration of basic science research and clinical cardiology. Our research is focused on understanding the clinical and genetic basis of inherited heart disease. We use a range of approaches including human gene discovery studies, basic cellular systems, animal models of human disease, and population-based psychosocial and public health studies. Our research involves state-of-the-art approaches including whole exome sequencing, mRNA and microRNA profiling, and RNASeq. Most importantly, we have the key clinical resources, including well phenotyped individual patients and families, which form the basis of all our genetic studies. To get to this point, we have developed cohorts and national registries of patients and families with inherited heart diseases. We also utilise the latest in genetic technology in order to form the basis of our novel gene discovery studies. Around 30,000 Australians die every year from sudden cardiac death. Around four young Australians, under the age of 35, die every week from sudden cardiac death. We know that there are around 40 cardiovascular conditions caused by underlying genetic faults. We all have around 22,000 genes, but a fault in just one can … Continue reading
