The UPMC Department of Hyperbaric Medicine is one of the tri-state area's major resources for outpatient and emergent hyperbaric oxygen therapy in the Pittsburgh and Western Pennsylvania region. The department has been serving the Pittsburgh region for over 20 years and continues it's mission to provide exceptional patient care. Treatments are provided and supervised by experienced and highly trained RN's. The department is run by medical director Dr. Kevin S. O'Toole. Hyperbaric Oxygen (HBO) Therapy involves exposing the patient to 100% oxygen in a high pressure environment. This pressure gradient causes the body to absorb more oxygen than it can under normal conditions. During your treatments, you will lie in a pressurized acrylic chamber. While in this chamber you will breathe pure oxygen. The chamber is transparent and an RN will observe you at all times. The chamber is pressurized slowly when starting treatment. During this time, you may occasionally feel mild pressure on your eardrums. A nurse will teach you how to relieve this pressure by swallowing or yawning. You can breathe normally during your treatment. Once you have reached treatment pressure, your body will feel no different than it does outside the chamber. Most treatment protocols are about … Continue reading

Treatment for Inflammatory Bowel Disease May Reduce Risk …

Posted: Published on June 28th, 2018

A new study adds to growing evidence linking Parkinson's disease (PD) with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). Researchers at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai in New York City found people with IBD are at a 28 percent higher risk of developing PD than those without IBD. The study, published in JAMA Neurology, also suggests taking a common IBD treatment known as anti-Tumor Necrosis Factor (anti-TNF) may reduce the risk of Parkinson's. IBD patients who received anti-TNF therapy were 78 percent less likely to develop PD compared with patients who didn't receive the treatment. Anti-TNF therapy blocks a protein that promotes inflammation. While the exact way in which PD develops among people with IBD is still unknown, PD is associated with inflammation and digestion problems. Some studies have suggested that PD may involve inflammation that begins in the intestine decades before progressing to the central nervous system. The new study's insights will allow for better screening for IBD patients for PD, since the onset of IBD usually begins decades before PD develops, the researchers wrote. The study, which included data from 144,018 people with IBD and 720,090 people without the disease, also offers evidence to support exploring anti-TNF therapy … Continue reading

Sessions Track 1:Heart Disease & Failure Heart diseaseare the disorders that affect your heart. Diseases under the heart disease umbrella include blood vessel diseases, such ascoronary arterydisease;heart rhythmproblems (arrhythmias); and heart defects you're born with i.e. congenital heart defects, Rheumatic heart disease, cardiovascular diseases ,Ischemic heart disease, Heart generation and many more. Heart failure is a condition in which your heart can't pump enough blood to meet your body's needs. The term Heart failure doesnt mean that your heart has stopped or its about to stop working. CHD can lead to heart failure by weakening the heart muscle over time. However, heart failure is a serious condition that requires medical care. Ventromedial nucleus of the hypothalamus – Wikipedia

Posted: Published on June 26th, 2018

The ventromedial nucleus of the hypothalamus (VMN, also sometimes referred to as the ventromedial hypothalamus, VMH) is a nucleus of the hypothalamus. "The ventromedial hypothalamus (VMH) is a distinct morphological nucleus involved in terminating hunger, fear, thermoregulation, and sexual activity."[1] This nuclear region is involved with the recognition of the feeling of fullness. It has four subdivisions: These subdivisions differ anatomically, neurochemically, and behaviorally. The ventromedial nucleus (VMN) is most commonly associated with satiety. Early studies showed that VMN lesions caused over-eating and obesity in rats. However, the interpretation of these experiments was summarily discredited when Gold's research demonstrated that precision lesioning of the VMN did not result in hyperphagia.[2] Nevertheless, numerous studies have shown that the immediacy of hyperphagia and obesity syndrome are a consequence of VMN lesions or procaine injections, and point to the VMN's role in satiety.[3][4][5][6][7][8][9] A major review of the subject in 2006 concluded that, "anatomical studies done both before and after Gold's study did not replicate his results with lesions, and in nearly every published direct comparison of VMH lesions vs. PVN or VNAB lesions, the group with VMH lesions ate substantially more food and gained twice as much weight."[10] This strongly substantiates the … Continue reading
