Interventional Cardiology | Knoxville Heart Group

Posted: Published on June 6th, 2018

Interventional cardiology is the use of non-surgical procedures to treat cardiac conditions percutaneouslythrough a needle puncturetothe skin. Our interventional cardiologistswill guide a thin flexible tube called a catheter through a vein or artery in your arm or leg to your heart. Hypertrophic obstructive cardiomyopathy (HOCM) is an inherited condition in which one part of the heart enlarges. The resulting asymmetry of the heart blocks outflows, so people with the condition are unable to get adequate blood to the rest of their bodies. In the past, the only treatments were with medication; or with medication and surgery, in which the surgeon would cut off the enlarged part of the heart that was blocking outflows. Nowalcohol septal ablation allows interventional cardiologists to inject alcohol into one of the blood vessels that supplies blood to the thickened area. The ablation blocks blood flow to the area, causing it to die and shrink so that the previously blocked blood outflow can return to normal. Percutaneous Coronary Interventionoften involves the placement of coronary stents to open blocked arteries to treat accumulated plaque. Stent procedures are performed through a catheter in the groin or wrist. The heart is protected in the chest wall by a lining (pericardium) … Continue reading

Femtosecond Laser Eases LASIK Fears

Posted: Published on June 6th, 2018

Reviewed By Vance Thompson, MD Are you interested in vision correction surgery but are fearful of having a bladed surgical instrument near your eye? If so, then bladeless LASIK may be the solution you are looking for. In bladeless LASIK also called blade-free LASIK, all-laser LASIK, or femto LASIK your LASIK surgeon uses two types of lasers for the vision correction procedure. First, an ultra-fast femtosecond laser is used to create a thin flap in the cornea (the clear front surface of the eye. Then, an excimer laser is used to reshape the underlying corneal tissue to correct your vision. The flap is then returned to its original position. The femtosecond laser eliminates the need for a bladed surgical tool (called a microkeratome) to create the corneal flap. No surgical blade of any kind is needed in all-laser LASIK. Generally, anyone who qualifies for LASIK surgery is a good candidate for bladeless LASIK. Also, some studies have suggested that all-laser LASIK may decrease the risk of certain LASIK complications associated with the use of a microkeratome. Bladeless LASIK has been available in the United States since 2001, when a company called IntraLase gained FDA approval of its first femtosecond laser … Continue reading

Hyperbaric Medicine – westchestermedicalcenter.com

The Hyperbaric Medicine program at Westchester Medical Center, the flagship of the Westchester Medical Center Health Network (WMCHealth), recently received Accreditation with Distinction from the Undersea and Hyperbaric Medical Society (UHMS) for its comprehensive hyperbaric oxygen therapy program that offers 24/7 services to the sickest patients in our region. Only 206 hyperbaric centers nationwide seek designation from the UHMS out of the thousands that offer the service and among that group, a mere 12% of the centers receive the notable Accreditation with Distinction designation. This is due to the societys 1,600-criteria survey that assesses factors including a centers 24/7 availability, the number of physicians trained to provide the service (24 at Westchester Medical Center) and the academic nature of the program in a tertiary care facility. Westchester Medical Centers hyperbarics program has the highest acuity patients in our region, some with complicated wounds that have failed treatment at other facilities and have persistent symptoms, and others with effects of prior radiation, carbon monoxide poisoning, sudden vision loss and traumatic injuries, said Kausik Kar, MD, Medical Director of the Hyperbaric Unit at Westchester Medical Center. We are proud to have received this distinction for our comprehensive program and exceptional team of … Continue reading

Concentric Remodeling – Cardioserv

Posted: Published on June 5th, 2018

Last month was designated American Heart Month to raise awarenessof cardiovascular disease, the leading fatality of Americans. AHA encouragesour patients to take control over understanding their risk factors of heart disease including knowing their numbers related to blood pressure. Untreated hypertension can have a long-term effect on the heart causing hypertensive heart disease, which can include coronary heart disease (CAD), left ventricular hypertrophy (LVH) and hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM). Echocardiography plays a major role in the prognostic evaluation of hypertension (HTN). The main contribution of echo in the management of hypertension is the assessment of left ventricular mass (LVM). In this blog we describe left ventricular hypertrophy (LVH) and identify the different categories of concentric, eccentric and concentric remodeling. In Part 2 of the blog we will elaborate on LV Mass (LVM) and Relative Wall Thickness (RWT). We will provide step-by-step instructions on how to obtain these values during a routine echocardiogram. Left ventricular hypertrophy is a form of cardiac remodeling that causes the heart wall muscle to thicken, which leads to an increase in LV mass (LVM). There are different sub-categories that fall into the diagnosis of LVH, which includes concentric, eccentric and concentric remodeling. There are key factors that … Continue reading

Focus on Stem Cell Research | National Institute of …

Posted: Published on June 3rd, 2018

Stem cells possess the unique ability to differentiate into many distinct cell types in the body, including brain cells, but they also retain the ability to produce more stem cells, a process termed self-renewal. There are multiple types of stem cell, such as embryonic stem (ES) cells, induced pluripotent stem (iPS) cells, and adult or somatic stem cells. While various types of stem cells share similar properties there are differences as well. For example, ES cells and iPS cells are able to differentiate into any type of cell, whereas adult stem cells are more restricted in their potential. The promise of all stem cells for use in future therapies is exciting, but significant technical hurdles remain that will only be overcome through years of intensive research. NINDS supports a diverse array of research on stem cells, from studies of the basic biology of stem cells in the developing and adult mammalian brain, to studies focusing on nervous system disorders such as ALS or spinal cord injury. Other examples of NINDS funded research include using iPS cells to derive dopamine-producing neurons that might alleviate symptoms in patients with Parkinsons disease, and using ES cells to generate cerebral organoids to model Zika … Continue reading
