Anyone with signs of moderate or severe traumatic brain injury (TBI) should receive medical attention as soon as possible. Little can be done to reverse the brain damage caused by an accident or injury, but healthcare workers try to keep the injured person's condition stable and prevent further injury. If you or a loved one has a TBI, your healthcare team will work to: Imaging tests help to diagnose TBI. Patients with moderate to severe TBI have a computed tomography (CT) scan of the head and are closely monitored in the intensive care unit (ICU). Treatments for moderate to severe TBI range from medical treatment to surgery. After recovering first in the hospital's intensive care unit (ICU), TBI patients with disabilities receive rehabilitation treatment (treatment to help a person regain as much function as possible). Our individualized treatment programs include: The prognosis (how well doctors expect you to recover from a disease or injury) is different for each person with traumatic brain injury (TBI). Approximately 50 percent of patients with severe head injuries need surgery to remove or repair hematomas (ruptured blood vessels) or contusions (bruised brain tissue). Patients may have disabilities after a TBI. Disabilities mean that patients aren't … Continue reading

What is the difference between a heart attack, cardiac arrest, and heart failure? The main difference separating a heart attack from heart failure is in the underlying reasons for the occurrence. Hearts attacks can be traced to blockages in arteries and acute flares, while heart failure is more likely to be due to congenital heart disease and a more developed condition. Arrhythmia is an abnormal beating of the heart that may feel like it comes at a fluttering, accelerated, or otherwise irregular pace. While in many cases these occurrences can be infrequent, benign and go away on their own, if persistent, they may require further consultation with a cardiologist. Cholesterol is a naturally occurring fatty body compound used to produce hormones. It becomes a problem for heart health when there are high levels of bad cholesterol, low-density lipoproteins (LDL), which can lead to arterial congestion. What is involved during a visit to a cardiologist? Visits to a cardiologist typically entail a doctor reviewing and assessing your health, and more specifically within the context of your heart health. It is important to prepare for appointments by having a list of medications and any documents related to your medical history. Some tests … Continue reading

Spinal Cord Injury Rehabilitation – BrainAndSpinalCord.org

The Acute Phase During the acute phase, it is very important that the person receive prompt medical care. The faster the person accesses treatment, the better his or her chances are at having the least amount of impairment possible. In most cases, like in the all too common suv rollover, the injured person will be sent to the closest hospital or center equipped to deal with spinal cord injuries. The first few days of the acute stage are accompanied by spinal shock, in which the persons reflexes dont work. During this stage, its very difficult to determine an exact prognosis, as some function beyond what is currently being seen may occur later. At this stage other complications from the accident or injury will also be present, such as brain injury, broken bones, or bruising. Once the acute phase is over and the person has been stabilized, he or she enters the rehabilitation stage of treatment. Treatment during this phase has the goal of returning as much function as possible to the person. Because all spinal cord injuries are different, a unique plan designed to help the person function and succeed in everyday life is designed. The plan often includes: In … Continue reading

Atopic dermatitis (eczema) – Mayo Clinic

Posted: Published on April 12th, 2018

Diagnosis No lab test is needed to identify atopic dermatitis (eczema). Your doctor will likely make a diagnosis by examining your skin and reviewing your medical history. He or she may also use patch testing or other tests to rule out other skin diseases or identify conditions that accompany your eczema. If you suspect a certain food caused your child's rash, tell the doctor and ask about identifying potential food allergies. Atopic dermatitis can be persistent. You may need to try various treatments over months or years to control it. And even if treatment is successful, signs and symptoms may return (flare). It's important to recognize the condition early so that you can start treatment. If regular moisturizing and other self-care steps don't help, your doctor may suggest one or more of the following treatments: Creams that control itching and help repair the skin. Your doctor may prescribe a corticosteroid cream or ointment. Apply it as directed, after you moisturize. Overuse of this drug may cause side effects, including thinning skin. Other creams containing drugs called calcineurin inhibitors such as tacrolimus (Protopic) and pimecrolimus (Elidel) affect your immune system. They are used by people older than age 2 to help … Continue reading

EMS Pharmacology: Drugs That Affect the Cardiovascular …

Posted: Published on April 11th, 2018

Drugs that Affect the Cardiovascular System The heart is made up of many interconnected branching fibers that form the walls of the 2 atria and 2 ventricles. Some of these fibers are capable of, and responsible for, conducting electrical impulses while other fibers are mainly responsible for muscle contraction. These specialized fibers are nourished through a vast network of blood vessels known as the coronary vasculature. Medications that affect these fibers are classified by their specific effect on the tissue. Cardiac glycosides are naturally occurring plant substances that have characteristic effects on the cardiac muscle. These specific compounds contain a carbohydrate molecule (sugar). When this molecule is combined with water, it is converted into a simple sugar plus 1 or more active substances. Glycosides may actually work by blocking certain ionic pumps in the cellular membrane. This action, indirectly increases the calcium concentration reaching the contractile proteins. A key cardiac glycoside is digoxin (Lanoxin); it is used to treat heart failure and to treat certain types of tachycardias. Digitalis glycosides can affect the heart in 3 distinctive ways: Many patients that take cardiac glycoside medication may develop side effects at one time or another due to the relatively small therapeutic … Continue reading

Types of Cerebral Palsy | Forms of CP | CerebralPalsy …

Posted: Published on April 11th, 2018

Several Cerebral Palsy classification systems exist today to define the type and form of Cerebral Palsy an individual has. The classification is complicated by the wide range of clinical presentations and degrees of activity limitation that exist. Knowing the severity, location and type of Cerebral Palsy your child has will help to coordinate care and fund treatment. What type of Cerebral Palsy does my child have? And, why does one doctor classify my childs Cerebral Palsy one way, while the other doctor labels it another way? Professionals who specialize in the treatment of Cerebral Palsy approach the condition from a number of different vantage points. An orthopedic surgeon requires a definition of the limbs affected and the extent of impairment in order to prescribe treatment. Neurosurgeons and neuroradiologists, on the other hand, are more concerned with the cause of the brain damage and descriptors for imposing white and gray matter so as to determine the type of brain injury or brain malformation. They are also concerned with diagnosing the extent and severity level of the childs Cerebral Palsy. At first, a parent may be concerned with the severity level classification mild, moderate or severe in order to better understand the … Continue reading

Brain Injury and Drug Addiction Treatment Program Overview

Posted: Published on April 11th, 2018

At NRI, we use the term dual diagnosis to describe the victim of a brain injury who is also struggling with substance abuse and addiction. Studies show that substance abuse is a key factor in more than a third of the accidents that result in a traumatic brain injuryand the use of alcohol or drugs prior to the injury often results in complications that require specialized treatment in a facility qualified to treat dual diagnosis patients. NRI is such a facility. Most individuals who were addicted to alcohol or drugs prior to their brain injury continue to experience substance abuse issues during their recovery. Other individuals may become addicted to pain medications as a result of their injury. Substance abuse and addiction not only pose special mental health concerns for people who have experienced brain trauma, they pose substantial impediments to recovery as well. As a facility uniquely capable of treating traumatic brain injury patients with dual diagnosis, NRI offers a non-judgmental and supportive environment that specifically addresses the challenges of recovery faced by those who are also struggling with alcohol or drug abuse. Our approach is based on respect for the dignity of the patients we serve and the … Continue reading
