What is Circadian Rhythm? – National Sleep Foundation

Posted: Published on March 29th, 2018

If youve ever noticed that you tend to feel energized and drowsy around the same times every day, you have your circadian rhythm to thank. What is it, exactly? Your circadian rhythm is basically a 24-hour internal clock that is running in the background of your brain and cycles between sleepiness and alertness at regular intervals. It's also known as your sleep/wake cycle. For most adults, the biggest dip in energy happens in the middle of the night (somewhere between 2:00am and 4:00am, when they're usually fast asleep) and just after lunchtime (around 1:00pm to 3:00pm, when they tend to crave a post-lunch nap). Those times can be different if youre naturally a night owl or a morning person. You also wont feel the dips and rises of your circadian rhythm as strongly if youre all caught up on sleep. Its when youre sleep-deprived that youll notice bigger swings of sleepiness and alertness. A part of your hypothalamus (a portion of your brain) controls your circadian rhythm. That said, outside factors like lightness and darkness can also impact it. When its dark at night, your eyes send a signal to the hypothalamus that its time to feel tired. Your brain, … Continue reading

Treating relapsing-remitting MS (RRMS) : National Multiple …

Posted: Published on March 29th, 2018

There are numerousmedicationsthat have been approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for the treatment of relapsing forms of MS, including relapsing-remitting MS (RRMS). All have been shown to reduce the number of relapses (also called attacks or exacerbations) and number of new lesions (also called plaques or scars) on magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), and they may also slow disease progression. Most MS experts recommend that people consider starting one of these medications as soon as the diagnosis of RRMS has been confirmed. Of these medications, seven are injectable (Avonex, Betaseron, Copaxone, Extavia, Glatopa, Plegridy,Rebifand Zinbryta(Zinbryta [daclizumab]was withdrawn from the worldwide market on March 2, 2018. Please see important information about the withdrawal in ourSociety News),three are oral (Aubagio, Gilenya and Tecfidera), and three are infused (Lemtrada, Novantrone and Tysabri). Novantrone is approved specifically for people with worsening RRMS in other words, those whose RRMS is progressing in spite of treatment with one of the first-line medications -- as well as those with secondary-progressive MS. Lemtrada is approved for people with relapsing forms of MS who have had an inadequate response to at least two other disease-modifying therapies. Articles OnMultiple Sclerosis Treatments Multiple Sclerosis Treatments Multiple Sclerosis Treatments There's no cure for multiple sclerosis (MS), but medicines and lifestyle changes can help you manage the disease. Work closely with your doctor to find the treatment that's best for you and causes the fewest side effects. If you have a type of multiple sclerosis called relapsing-remitting MS and your condition is acting up, your doctor may first treat you with a disease-modifying drug. These medicines slow down the advance of your disease and prevent flare-ups. The drugs work by curbing the immune system -- your body's main defense against germs -- so that it doesn't attack the protective coating called myelin that surrounds the nerves. Some drugs come as injections under your skin or into a muscle. The shot might make your skin sore, red, itchy, or dimply. They include: Beta interferons: These are some of the most common drugs used to treat MS. They ease the severity and frequency of flares. They can also cause flu-like symptoms, like aches, fatigue, fever, and chills, but these should fade within a few months. They may make you slightly more likely to get an infection. Thats because they lower the number … Continue reading

Ulcerative Colitis – CrohnsDisease.com

Posted: Published on March 25th, 2018

Ulcerative colitis is a chronic (long-term) inflammatory disease that affects some or all of the large intestine.1 The different types of ulcerative colitis refer to the affected parts: Inflammation in the colon causes little sores to form.2 The little sores are called ulcers. They fill with pus and mucus. Ulcerative colitis is part of a group of disorders called inflammatory bowel diseases. Another common inflammatory bowel disease is Crohns disease. These two inflammatory bowel diseases have similar symptoms, such as diarrhea and abdominal pain. It can be hard for patients and health care providers to tell these conditions apart. However, there are important differences in the type and location of inflammation.3 Ulcerative colitis affects the large intestine and rectum, whereas Crohns disease can affect any part of the digestive tract.1 People with Crohns disease have patchy areas of inflammation along the digestive tract (Figure). In contrast, people with ulcerative colitis have inflammation in one continuous area.1,2 In ulcerative colitis, only the innermost layer of the digestive tract wall is affected. Crohns disease causes inflammation through the entire thickness of the digestive tract wall.1,2 The procedure used to tell ulcerative colitis apart from Crohns disease is a colonoscopy with biopsy. Treatment for Spinal Cord Injury To Start Clinical Trial …

Posted: Published on March 23rd, 2018

San Francisco, CA Asterias Biotherapeutics Inc. has been given approval by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to begin a clinical trial of its stem cell therapy in patients with spinal cord injury. The California Institute for Regenerative Medicine (CIRM), Californias stem cell agency, is funding the trial. The Phase 1/2a clinical trial is designed to test the safety of this approach and to see if it has any benefit for patients. The trial will use increasing doses of Asterias AST-OPC1 cells. These are a form of cell called oligodendrocyte progenitor, which are capable of becoming several different kinds of cells some of which play a supporting role and help protect nerve cells in the central nervous system, the area damaged in spinal cord injury. The trial is a follow-on to the CIRM-funded clinical trial begun by Geron in 2010 using the same kind of stem cell. Geron halted that clinical trial due to a change in business strategy. At the time five patients had been treated with the AST-OPC1 cells. Since then follow-up studies on the five patients have shown no serious side effects due to the therapy and in four of the five patients, MRI scans have shown … Continue reading

Gene Therapy in Muscular Dystrophy

Posted: Published on March 22nd, 2018

Gene therapy, the use of genetic material to treat a disease or disorder, is making strides in muscular dystrophy. Although the approach is still considered experimental, studies in animal models have shown promising results and clinical trials in humans are underway. Gene therapy has the potential to help people with inherited disorders, in which a gene mutation causes cells to produce a defective protein or no protein at all, leading to disease symptoms. To deliver the genetic material to the cells, scientists use a tool called a vector. This is typically a virus that has been modified so that it doesnt cause disease. It is hoped that the vector will carry the therapeutic gene into the cells nucleus, where it will provide the instructions necessary to make the desired protein. The most common form of muscular dystrophy, Duchenne muscular dystrophy, is caused by a mutation in the DMD gene, which codes for a protein called dystrophin. Dystrophin is part of a protein complex that strengthens and protects muscle fibers. When the cells dont have functional dystrophin due to the gene mutation, muscles progressively weaken. Scientists think that supplying a gene that codes for a functional form of dystrophin might be … Continue reading

Multiple Sclerosis and Sleep

Posted: Published on March 21st, 2018

Is Sleep Really More Important For MS Patients? Quite simply? Yes. It is. If you asked me the most important thing someone with multiple sclerosis should do, I would say to ensure they get good sleep. Even if they do nothing else as part of their treatment plan (and to be clear: I would never recommend good sleep as their only treatment recommendation), it’s incredibly important that MS patients get good sleep, preferably at least seven to nine hours of solid, sound sleep. What do I mean by solid, sound sleep? I mean you fall asleep and stay asleep. Of course, that can be incredibly difficult for MS patients, who may suffer from pain, spasticity, anxiety, bladder issues, and even the actual effects of MS on the brain—all things that can make good sleep more difficult. But Why Is Sleep So Important? Quite simply, sleep affects every part of everything in your body. Sleep affects your energy levels, sure, but also your pain, weight, skin, even your heart. Sleep helps determine your mental state, as it influences your moods, memory, decision-making processes, ability to concentrate, your judgment, even your reaction times. Sleep is the hidden engine for your brain. It … Continue reading
