Eczema Treatment, Home Remedies, and Causes – eMedicineHealth

Posted: Published on March 21st, 2018

What Is the Treatment for Early and Mild Eczema? Treatment for eczema can be managed at home by changing laundry detergents or soaps that may be causing the irritant. Avoid tight-fitting or rough clothing. Avoid scratching the affected area. Medical treatment include prescription anti-inflammatory medications, and steroid creams. Antibiotics may have to be prescribed to clear the affected irritation. Anti-itch creams, especially those containing hydrocortisone, may be helpful, but many experts recommend avoiding topical diphenhydramine and topical anesthetics because of concern of becoming sensitized and developing a secondary allergic contact dermatitis in reaction to these medications. Anti-itch creams containing pramoxine and menthol may be safer in this regard. Are There Home Remedies for Eczema? Removing exacerbating factors is a good place to start. This may be as simple as changing the laundry detergent to one that is fragrance free or as difficult as moving to a new climate or changing jobs. Long baths in soapy water or long hot showers may worsen eczema. On the other hand, soaking in warm, non-soapy water followed immediately by moisturizers to "seal in the moisture" is helpful. Prevent dry skin by taking short lukewarm showers or baths. Use a mild soap or body cleanser. … Continue reading

Cerebral Palsy-Treatment Overview

Posted: Published on March 19th, 2018

Articles OnCerebral Palsy Cerebral Palsy Cerebral Palsy Even though CP can't be cured, a variety of treatments can help people who have CP to make the most of their abilities and physical strength, prevent complications, and improve their quality of life. Specific treatment varies by individual and changes as needed if new issues develop. In general, treatment focuses on ways to maintain or improve a person's quality of life and overall health. Regular visits with your child's doctor and specialists are important for monitoring your child's condition. Treatment for CP includes: Physical therapy and special equipment may be used together, such as for constraint-induced movement therapy, also called shaping. This encourages a child to increase movements by presenting interesting activities or objects and giving praise and rewards when a child attempts to use the less-functioning muscles. Ongoing treatment for cerebral palsy (CP) focuses on continuing and adjusting existing treatments and adding new treatments as needed. Working with others involved with your child's care, understanding your child's needs and rights, and taking care of yourself and other family members are all important parts of treatment. For more information, see Home Treatment. Physical therapy is an important treatment that begins soon after … Continue reading

anon950526Post 156 Is there any impact due to this? Obviously, some of you dont have kids. The life of a child is worth so much more than any adult. You got to live. What if that embryo happened to be you? Would you then feel that it is OK to conduct this research? I am a mother of two, soon to be three. I don't care about any of that just long as my kids at least get a chance at living and there is a God. I had a 50 percent chance of having babies because of a huge benign tumor that grew on my left ovary and killed my left fallopian tube. I prayed for my babies and got them every time. Besides that, everybody has their I watched this gruesome abortion video and the lady was 12 weeks along. You could see the child trying to fight for its life. Murder is murder. Helping to save other people or not -- that's like you seeing a man trying to rape a woman and you shoot him dead. It's the same if you were trying to save her life but you get persecuted and convicted for taking matters … Continue reading

Pros And Cons Of Stem Cell Research

Posted: Published on March 18th, 2018

Pros and Cons of Stem Cell Research - What are Stem Cells? There has been much controversy in the press recently about the pros and cons of stem cell research. What is the controversy all about? "Stem" cells can be contrasted with "differentiated" cells. They offer much hope for medical advancement because of their ability to grow into almost any kind of cell. For instance, neural cells in the brain and spinal cord that have been damaged can be replaced by stem cells. In the treatment of cancer, cells destroyed by radiation or chemotherapy can be replaced with new healthy stem cells that adapt to the affected area, whether it be part of the brain, heart, liver, lungs, or wherever. Dead cells of almost any kind, no matter the type of injury or disease, can be replaced with new healthy cells thanks to the amazing flexibility of stem cells. As a result, billions of dollars are being poured into this new field. Pros and Cons of Stem Cell Research - Where Do They Come From?To understand the pros and cons of stem cell research, one must first understand where stem cells come from. There are three main sources for obtaining stem … Continue reading

Ulcerative Colitis – Symptoms, Treatment, and More

Posted: Published on March 15th, 2018

Ulcerative colitis is a chronic disease that causes inflammation in the rectum, colon (large intestine), and, infrequently, the last part of the small intestine (ileum). The inflammation affects the inner lining of the colon, causing small sores, or ulcers. This is a lifelong condition that will go through periods of active disease (flare-ups) and remission. Ulcerative colitis, along with a another condition known as Crohn's disease, are collectively called inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). Ulcerative colitis affects the rectum and large intestine. Receiving a diagnosis of ulcerative colitis is going to mean making some lifestyle changes and learning how to work with physicians, such as a gastroenterologist, to manage the disease. There have been many advances in treating ulcerative colitis in recent years, which has improved outcomes for patients. Taking time to learn more about IBD is also going to be an important part of managing symptoms and preventing flare-ups. Ulcerative colitis actually has several subtypes within it. Doctors may refer to the type of ulcerative colitis in order to best choose an appropriate treatment, as not every treatment will work for every type of disease. Ulcerative colitis causes certain signs and symptoms, some of which are in the digestive tract … Continue reading

Ulcerative Colitis | Seattle Childrens Hospital

Your child might need surgery if: Most people with ulcerative colitis need surgery at some point to remove the colon and reduce the risk for colon cancer. There are 2 main types of surgery for ulcerative colitis. Both are surgeries to remove the colon. The most common surgery goes by many names: In this operation, surgeons remove the entire colon and the lining of the rectum. Then they create a pouch inside the body from the end of the small intestine (ileum) to the anus. To give the pouch a chance to heal and function as the new bowel for the child, surgeons usually do this operation in two steps: Ileostomy is temporary. It allows the rectum to heal without stool passing through. In about 2 months, after the inside pouch heals, surgeons remove the outside bag and close the ileostomy. This allows waste to pass out through the anus. The second type of surgery for ulcerative colitis is called proctocolectomy (or sometimes just colectomy). This operation is rarely, if ever, needed. Surgeons remove the entire colon. If the rectum is too unhealthy to work well, surgeons take it out along with the colon. Then they create a permanent ileostomy. … Continue reading

Spinal Cord Injury Fact Sheet | California’s Stem Cell Agency

Posted: Published on March 15th, 2018

CIRM funds many projects seeking to better understand spinal cord injury and to translate those discoveries into new therapies. About 250,000 people in the U.S. live with spinal cord injuries. Half of those are quadriplegic, with the paralysis impacting all four limbs to some extent. For those individuals the lifetime cost of managing their condition is estimated to be between $2 million and $3 million. Spinal cord injury became the first condition targeted in a human clinical trial using cells made from embryonic stem cells. That trial, begun by Geron in 2010 and based on the findings of a team CIRM currently funds, was later cancelled by Geron for financial reasons. By the time of the cancellation five patients around the country had been enrolled in the study, including two at Stanford, who entered the trial during a period when CIRM funded Geron. Those patients continue to be followed to learn as much as possible about this approach. Californias stem cell agency retains many grants for research to move potential spinal cord injury therapies forward (the full list is below). Much of this work focuses on trying to determine which type of nerve cell is the best one to transplant, … Continue reading

AANS | Spinal Cord Injury

Posted: Published on March 15th, 2018

According to the National Spinal Cord Injury Association, as many as 450,000 people in the U.S. are living with a spinal cord injury (SCI). Other organizations conservatively estimate this figure to be about 250,000. The spinal cord is about 18 inches long, extending from the base of the brain to near the waist. Many of the bundles of nerve fibers that make up the spinal cord itself contain upper motor neurons (UMNs). Spinal nerves that branch off the spinal cord at regular intervals in the neck and back contain lower motor neurons (LMNs). Types and Levels of SCI The severity of an injury depends on the part of the spinal cord that is affected. The higher the SCI on the vertebral column, or the closer it is to the brain, the more effect it has on how the body moves and what one can feel. More movement, feeling and voluntary control are generally present with injuries at lower levels. Tetraplegia (a.k.a. quadriplegia) results from injuries to the spinal cord in the cervical (neck) region, with associated loss of muscle strength in all four extremities. Paraplegia results from injuries to the spinal cord in the thoracic or lumbar areas, resulting in … Continue reading
