Levels of Spinal Cord Injury Brain and Spinal

Posted: Published on January 26th, 2018

Basic Spinal Cord Anatomy To understand this confusion and what you are actually being told when your injury is described as being at a certain level, it is necessary to understand basic spinal anatomy. The spine and the spinal cord are two different structures. The spinal cord is a long series of nerve cells and fibers running from the base of the brain to shortly above the tailbone. It is encased in the bony vertebrae of the spine, which offers it some protection. The spinal cord relays nerve signals from the brain to all parts of the body and from all points of the body back to the brain. Part of the confusion regarding spinal cord injury levels comes from the fact that the spine and the spinal cord each are divided into named segments which do not always correspond to each other. The spine itself is divided into vertebral segments corresponding to each of the vertebrae. The spinal cord is divided into neurological segmental levels, meaning that the focus is on what part of the body the nerves from each section control. The spine is divided into seven neck (cervical) vertebrae, twelve chest (thoracic) vertebra, five back (lumbar) vertebrae, … Continue reading

Research and anecdotal experiences aredemonstratingthat using a low dose of the FDA-approved drug Naltrexone (generally ~1/12th of a standard dose) is helpful in treating many immune system disorders. LDNers.org is dedicated to increasing accessibility to unbiased information in order to help more patients with immune conditions improve their quality oflife, and their health, through the use of Low Dose Naltrexone. LDNers.org was originally started by SammyJo in 2004, an MS patient who experienced remarkable recovery from MS misery through the use of Low Dose Naltrexone, in order to confirm that others were seeing the same positive results that she was. Over the next 12 years, thousands of LDNers contributed their experiences, and the community she built as well as the surveys she has conducted have helped encourage new scientific interest and academic research. Today, LDNers.org is maintained by a small group of people with autoimmune disorders who have similarly experienced remarkable recovery thanks to Low Dose Naltrexone. Hunger Motivation AP Psychology Community

Posted: Published on January 22nd, 2018

Hunger Motivation Most of us love food. In fact, I can truthfully say that I think about food probably more than I have thought about anything in my whole life. Everyday, even when teaching, I think about what I am going to eat for my next meal (or snack). If I am in a Vegan phase, I think about nuts, pasta and fruits. If not I think about big juicy cheeseburgers, fresh warm Krispy Crme donuts and a thick chemical enhanced Micky Ds chocolate shake. Damn, I LOVE FOOD. Our bodies need food!!! However, we sometimes eat even when we do not need food. Thus, the motivation for hunger goes beyond simple nourishment. There are both biological and psychological factors around the motivation of hunger. Biological Basis of Hunger When your stomach feels stuffed you probably do not feel hungry and when your stomach is empty you probably get that take me to Taco Bell feeling. Researchers used to believe that the feeling of hunger comes from our stomach. To test the theory out, they made some dude swallow a balloon and inflated the balloon inside his stomach. The dude felt full for awhile. But after a few hours he … Continue reading

Stem Cell Treatment for Cerebral Palsy Beike Biotechnology

Posted: Published on January 22nd, 2018

Nerve Growth Factor (NGF) Nerve growth factor (NGF) is a member of the neurotrophic factor (neurotrophin, NTFS) family, which can prevent the death of nerve cells and has many features of typical neurotransmitter molecules. NGF plays an important role in the development and growth of nerve cells. NGF is synthesized and secreted by tissues (corneal epithelial, endothelial, and corneal stromal cells), and it can be up-taken by sympathetic or sensory nerve endings and then transported to be stored in neuronal cell bodies where it can promote the growth and differentiation of nerve cells. NGF can exert neurotrophic effects on injured nerves and promote neurogenesis (the process of generating neurons from stem cells) that is closely related to the development and functional maintenance and repair of the central nervous system. It is also capable of promoting the regeneration of injured neurons in the peripheral nervous system, improving the pathology of neurons and protecting the nerves against hypoxia (lack of oxygen)/ischemia (lack of blood supply). hormone replacement therapy – North American Menopause …

Posted: Published on January 20th, 2018

Hormone therapy (HT) is one of the government-approved treatments for relief of menopausal symptoms. These symptoms, caused by lower levels of estrogen at menopause, include hot flashes, sleep disturbances, and vaginal dryness. HT is also approved for the prevention of osteoporosis. Today, clinicians prescribe much lower doses for much shorter terms (3-5 years) than before 2002. To begin this discussion about the benefits and risks of menopausal HT, here is some background information. There are three benchmark stages of natural menopause: There are two basic types of HT: There are two general ways to take HT: Current prescribing practice: Begin HT with the lowest effective dose for the shortest amount of time consistent with their individual goals. The benefit-risk ratio is favorable for women who initiate HT close to menopause (ages 50-59, typically) but becomes riskier with time since menopause and advancing age. Women with early menopause before age 40 without a history of breast cancer risk can take HT until the typical age of menopause at 51 if there is no reason not to take it. Clinicians will recommend an individualized plan for each woman. There is no one size fits all therapy. Literally hundreds of clinical studies have … Continue reading
