Traumatic Brain Injury & Neurological Disorder Treatment …

Posted: Published on December 28th, 2017

All brain injuries are serious. Some are life-threatening. But in many cases treatmentand healingis indeed possible. In fact, a high percentage of brain injury patients go on to lead productive and fulfilling lives. Long after rehabilitation has been completed, people with a brain injury need to sustain the gains made in rehabilitation to remain independent. Our goal is to make that outcome a reality. The Neurologic Rehabilitation Institute (NRI) is an internationally recognized center for the treatment and rehabilitation of individuals over the age of 18 dealing with traumatic brain injuries and other neurological disorders. Located on the park-like campus of Brookhaven Hospital in Tulsa, Oklahoma, NRI goes beyond traditional rehabilitation care to provide victims of traumatic brain injury with one of the most comprehensive and advanced treatment programs in America, offering complex care rehabilitation, intensive neurobehavioral rehabilitation and TBI dual diagnosis treatment. This highly individualized treatment program, created by our interdisciplinary team of neurological specialists, is tailored to each patients unique set of needsbut the goal is always the sameto give individuals who have experienced a severe brain injury the highest level of independence possible. NRI offers a wide range of treatment options and services including: In addition, our … Continue reading

Hypothalamus – Anatomy, Blood supply and Function | Kenhub

Posted: Published on December 28th, 2017

Overview At the core of any well-oiled machine, there is a busy engine that keeps it going. The hypothalamus is at the center of a plethora of physiological processes including, but not limited to, thermoregulation, osmoregulation and hormonal regulation. It also works closely with the pituitary gland to modulate endocrine activity based on the bodys physiological demands. The purpose of this article will be to evaluate the gross anatomical organization and vascular supply of the hypothalamus. Additionally, the article will look at key anatomical relationships to other structures, some associated neuronal pathways and the function of different nuclei of the gland. Recommended video: Medial view of the brain Structures seen on the medial view of the brain. The images show a midsagittal section of the brain. The left and right lateral walls of the third ventricle are divided by an anteroposterior depression known as the hypothalamic sulcus. It runs from the anterior tip of the fornix between the interventricular foramen of Monro superiorly and the anterior commissure inferiorly to the posterior commissure (superior to the beginning of the cerebral aqueduct of Sylvius). This depression separates the thalamus (superiorly) from the hypothalamus (inferiorly). The hypothalamus is composed mainly of different nuclei … Continue reading

The Endocrine System: Hypothalamus and Pituitary

Posted: Published on December 28th, 2017

Are you hot right now? Cold? Maybe you're like Goldilocks and are just right. What about your height? Are you tall? Average? Short? Maybe your metabolism is lightning fast and you're always hungry, or maybe it's a bit slow and you stay full longer. All of theseregardless of which one you identify withare regulated by the endocrine system. (Hypothalamus and pituitary, highlighted in blue) I'm going to be throwing a lot of information at you, dear reader, so brace yourself! Its no secret your brain is one busy placeneurons move at incredible speeds, synapses are constantly firing, blood is pumping, and glands are producing hormones. These glands, specifically the hypothalamus and pituitary, are working all the time to keep your body running at optimal performance.Every hormone the endocrine system releases follows a basic set-up: a signal is received, hormones are secreted, and the target cell undergoes changes to its basic functions. The almond-sized hypothalamus is located below the thalamus and sits just above the brainstem. All vertebrate brains have a hypothalamus. Its primary function is to maintain homeostasis (stability of the internal environment) in the body. The hypothalamus links the nervous and endocrine systems by way of the pituitary gland. … Continue reading

When Stroke Affects the Thalamus – Stroke Connection …

Posted: Published on December 28th, 2017

The thalamus is a busy place in the human brain, and a stroke there can have a wide range of effects. By Jon Caswell The thalamus is a busy place in the human brain, and a stroke there can have a wide range of effects. Jeremy Schmahmann, professor of neurology at Harvard Medical School, director of the ataxia unit and member of the cognitive behavioral neurology unit at Massachusetts General Hospital, shared more about this type of stroke. The thalamus, which means "inner chamber" in Greek, is on top of the brainstem near the center of the brain. It has two halves, each about the size of a walnut. "The thalamus is divided into many different areas, which are connected very specifically to different parts of the brain," Dr. Schmahmann said. "A stroke in one part of the thalamus will not have the same effect as a stroke in another part." The thalamus has many functions, including: The thalamus can be thought of as a "relay station," receiving signals from the brains outer regions (cerebral cortex), interpreting them, then sending them to other areas of the brain to complete their job. Though relatively small, the thalamus controls a big part … Continue reading

Spinal Cord Injuries – North American Spine Society

Posted: Published on December 27th, 2017

Patient Education Committee Patient Education Committee Spinal fractures occur when an injury is sustained to the spine resulting in a break or disruption of the spinal vertebrae or the attached ligaments. The spinal column contains and protects the spinal cord and exiting nerve roots. Some injuries affect only the spinal column without disturbing the nerve elements while other, more severe injuries to the spine can result in temporary or permanent damage to the spinal cord and/or exiting nerve roots. The diagnosis of such injuries relies upon radiological studies including x-rays, CAT scans and sometime magnetic resonance imaging studies (MRI) to visualize the damage. Treatment of such fractures may require a brace or surgery or both depending on the degree of instability. Spinal cord injuries (SCI) remains a devastating condition for both patients and their families. There are approximately 10,000 new injuries in the United States each year with more than 200,000 people suffering from either paralysis of the arms or legs or both secondary to spinal cord injury. Males account for roughly 75% of patients treated with spinal cord injuries. Improvement in the quality of care over the last few decades has dramatically improved the outlook and survival for patients … Continue reading

Eczema | University of Maryland Medical Center

Posted: Published on December 25th, 2017

Treatment The goals when treating eczema are to heal the skin, reduce symptoms, prevent skin damage, and prevent flares. Developing skin care routines, identifying what triggers flares, and avoiding triggers are a large part of any treatment plan. Dry skin often makes the condition worse. Remember to: Parents can help their children by: Phototherapy and Photochemotherapy Treatment with ultraviolet light may help mild-to-moderate cases of eczema in children over age 12 and adults. Phototherapy or light therapy may be combined with a type of drug called psoralen. It is then called photochemotherapy. People who have eczema often have food allergies, so eating a healthy diet may help reduce inflammation and allergic reactions. Check with your doctor before giving a supplement to a child. Avoid exposure to environmental or food allergens. Common foods that cause allergic reactions are dairy, soy, citrus, peanuts, wheat (sometimes all gluten-containing grains), fish, eggs, corn, and tomatoes. There is much controversy regarding the most effective way to test for food allergies or sensitivities. Eat fewer refined foods and sugar. These foods contribute to inflammation in the body. Eat more fresh vegetables, whole grains, and essential fatty acids (cold-water fish, nuts, and seeds). Herbs are one way … Continue reading

Muscular Dystrophy – OrthoInfo – AAOS

Posted: Published on December 25th, 2017

There are nine major types of MD affecting people of all ages, from infancy to middle age or later. These forms of MD differ in terms of age of onset and muscles affected. How severe the symptoms are and how rapidly the disease progresses also varies. The two most common types of MD that affect children are Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD) and Becker muscular dystrophy (BMD). Both DMD and BMD affect boys almost exclusively. They are sex-linked (X-linked) disorders that typically pass from a mother (who has no symptoms) to her son. Girls are rarely affected. Both Duchenne MD and Becker MD cause weak muscles, lack of coordination, and progressive disability. Duchenne MD begins with muscle loss in the pelvis, upper arms, and legs. The first signs and symptoms of DMD develop between ages 2 to 5 years. Symptoms include: Many children with DMD lose their ability to walk by late childhood and require wheelchairs. As muscles continue to weaken in the back and chest, most children develop curvature of the spine (scoliosis). By adolescence, DMD usually progresses to weaken the heart and respiratory muscles. Becker MD begins with muscle loss in the hips, pelvis, thighs and shoulders. BMD is … Continue reading
